So there it is... the first in the new series of live TURN 8 shows.
Tonight's highlights included:
- A first peak at DUST Warfare, the new Weird World War 2 wargame from Fantasy Flight Games
- What Beasts of War will be up to at Salute 2012... will you be visiting the Hobby Lab?
- and some views on the new Games Workshop paint range

I have to say, I strongly disagree with all these comments that everyone’s armies are going to start looking the same.
These comments seem to suggest that we, as gamers and painters have no free will. If I want to paint some necrons, I can use the “necron” paints from the GW line, that they use in their guides, but I can still use whatever colours I want otherwise. I don’t see how having the new colour names more streamlined to suit the archtype schemes (ultramarines for example) is going to reduce the number of custom schemes we see.

I love the Hobby Lab idea. I’m familiar with more than a few crafts stores that run hands-on days to help teach and sell product and seeing one geared towards our hobby is top notch.

Great show again, I’m hoping to get to salute this year, trying to organise myself so I have to be in or near London on the friday to give me an excuse to stay over and go.

Missed the show, partly because when I was cooking, the inside of the oven door decided to spontaneously shatter leaving me with an oven full of glass to clean up!

Im loving the vallejo paints started to use them at the start of this year and there alot better than those gw paints and also bigger range i think theres like over 300 different paints which is twice the amount of gw paints. heres a great chart that shows the similarities of particular paint ranges to gw old paints http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart

This was a great turn 8. I loved the dust discussion. I might not be able to afford to be able to dive into dust warfare right away but the game looks like it will be a major player in the next few years. Everything Fantasy Flight touches turns to gold.

This was the first one I watched, pretty interesting.
I must start off by saying that I am a long time watcher of your Beasts of War web episodes. I sit down and listen to them in the background as I study.
Vallejo paints are by far the best range that I have ever used. My only regret is that I do not have as many as I would like as I am a university student. I love table top wargames and I must admit that painting is by far my favourite aspect of it. Nothing beats a well painted army on a scenic, painted gaming board ( or even a display board for that matter ). I wholeheartedly support and recommend Vallejo paints over the other brands out there.
I would give my left hand for this paint set. ( my right is needed in case I win so that I am still able to paint !! )

I am running a game at salute table gj01 which is turn right at entrance 3rd table along also Redditch wargames club have a very nice cutlass table they are doing I belive they are somewhere in the top left hand corner as you enter
Biggest problem with the new GW paints isn’t a conspiracy against your own colour schemes its definitely the crappy pots. Really missed a trick not switching to dropper bottles.
Great to have Turn8 back. Hoping to get down to Salute, booked train tickets ages ago but haven’t been able to find any accommodation that meets the wifes approval and my wallets.

In reference to the locking everything down within a paint system so on and so forth,
The unique creation of certain armies and chapters like my handle for example you will loose a very critical aspect of what made 40k fun for atleast me.
If you were to see a “what you see is what you get rule” change to a paint standard based on only using certain colors provided by GW.
Or you can not enter the tourneys,
would be a terrible move on GW’s part…
It does seem plausible though in light of other stunts I have seen coming from GW

Turn 8 has returned!!! I thought having the skype interviews was a nice new touch to the format. Also, can’t wait for more info on Dust Warfare.
I don’t think anyone else has mentioned this but I’d love to see Project Pandora played out on the BattleSystem Terrain!!! I imagine some of those sneaky Verr-myn hiding behind the reactors jumping out to slice up some unsuspecting Corporation troopers with their knives (or for Andy) their giant drills!

I too, lament having to watch recorded episodes 🙁 But new episodes are new, recorded or otherwise! And being inebriated+painting=wonky eyes (on minis) and complete disregard for colour theory…don’t drink and drybrush!

Welcome back gentlemen just two things even if Gw wished to convert everyone to there paint system (which ofcourse they do being the evil empire) it does not mean we must follow if the paint is good then use it as you see fit. Two at the end of Turn 8 it went kind of dark any idea what happened , did you notice?

i used game color many moons ago and it was great but i then went to real paint (artists paint) that has far hgher pigment quality then any model range. i wont be bothering with GW’s new line but would love to give the whole velljo range a go.

First of all just liek to say how great the show was/is- I’m halfway through currently. The Skype calls are definatly a good idea, once you sort out the feedback haha. The paints conversation is very interesting (and a strike back at those who call you beer-swilling ogres in a bad way). In response to the debate, I’d just like to add that there is the Army Painter method – akin to a system. I use the paints but not nescessarily the method.
I would like to win some paints also, so consider this my entry.
Finally, I’d just like to add that I’ll be working the Mantic stand at Salute and look forwards to bumping into you there. Keep up the great work guys.

Hobby Lab sounds wicked, as I spend more time model making than painting at the moment, as nearly every mini I make turns into a conversion of sorts. (which gives me an excuse for a shameless plug for my youtube channel: BazookaJRambo http://www.youtube.com/user/BazookaJRambo lol 😛
It’s interesting what Warren said about the old White Dwarfs with their custom terrain and how now you only see their plastic terrain, as I noticed that too. I loved the old custom stuff, it was awesome, but when I started to buy white dwarf again, I found I wasn’t seeing the old bits of terrain that were made by hand.
What I see now is that the more creative lot are at Forge World, when it comes to the more interesting and custom terrain boards.
About the 145 Citadel Paints, I feel it’s good for beginners to choose their paints, but
the idea that they say is behind the greater range of tones that “you don’t need to blend paints any more” is a rather thinly disguised way of saying ‘Instead of buying 2 colours to make a third, now you can buy 3 instead!’. It will help people who are not skilled in blending colours, but in following the easy route you could be buying more paints than necessary; which equals them selling more paints. But then it could make painting a lot quicker – argh, damn these swings and roundabouts lol.
So, I feel the 145 paints are good for new comers to GW minis, but if you want to know more about painting techniques then you need to get the ‘Eavy Metal Masterclass which reprints painting guides from previous White Dwarfs (albeit with the older paints-damn) and the Imperial Armour Model Masterclass books – if you’re only looking at what you can get from GW and FW that is.
One book I’d like to get that’s not made by GW is it Kevin Dallimore’s Painting & Modelling Guide: Masterclass http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kevin-Dallimores-Painting-Modelling-Guide/dp/190154320X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1333721059&sr=1-1
So as always it’s good to look around at what else is available, and to pick and choose what paints you really need from the 145 available, instead of only buying a selection that’s made for you.
It’s a pity that you’ve moved the format to once a month guys, I was getting used to seeing what outfit Darrell would be trying out every two weeks.

Good to hear that you will have a booth (or 2) down Salute this year, gonna gather some friends and pop down and say hello. Might even get you to sign the copy of the Cutlass! rulebook I won on the show a while back. I’m looking forward to the new GW range, sounds like a great way in for newbies to get their painting to a nice standard and there’s nothing to stop experienced users form adding the new paints to their existing choices. Doubt White Dwarf would drop Eavy Metal work from the mag to only show the approved system paint jobs.

Big difference between GW making a standard and rigid painting style as opposed to Flames of War is quite distinct.
In Warhammer Fantasy, Lord of the Rings/Hobbit and 40K they are all based upon fantasy. This implies more imagination going into an army. One of the things which drew me into GW’s games long ago was the emphasis on coming up with your own stuff be it army colors, terrain or what have you. Using ‘eavy Metal and their brilliant terrain builders inspired me. I do not like that they are going away from the more imaginative parts of their world.
Flames of War is historical and wanting to paint your Panzers, Mustangs and T31s, is a sensible goal. Historical gamers are a different breed than fantasy, sci-fi gamers and both hobbies require different and careful planning. Correct paints included with each piece you buy in Flames of War, great idea! Paints in all GW’s ranges, BAAAAD idea. Their figures are expensive enough. Can you imagine what they’d charge if they included paints? Eeeek!
That said, paints look good, but no way I’ll touch White Dwarf anytime soon. It’s lost a lot of it’s appeal as it’s lost much of the fantasy it’s based upon.
I recall going to Warhammer World and seeing Minas Tirith in scale! Amazing terrain building and I wonder if that could have been done with all of their terrain sets taking over material.

I for one am not too happy that GW released a 200 something paint kit with all of the citadel paints in it, waited a few months and then decides to drop a new line of paints on us. I will not be waiting in line just to spend 130+ on paints…..

Although I have to say I’m looking forward for the GW paint system. As I’m usually short on time and running multiple game systems that need painted Minis I’m always interested in reducing my paint time as Gaming is me most beloved part of this hobby 🙂

The new GW painting system attempts to make painting easier and faster. I think GW brought in the new paint line because they want to entice more of the kiddies who are playing video games. Three retailers I spoke to were very pissed about the expense: $2000 for a half rack, $4000 for a full rack.
