Another battle using ‘Soldiers of God’ as they tend to be the only rules we have found that give the period feel we are after.
Crusader army started well but the destruction of one of the units of knights, following an impetuous charge sealed the armies fate. The Pilgrims managed to steal the show though, pelting the horse archers with rocks, sticks and pottery to drive them off and then seeing off some tribal horsemen… they did more than the knights!

Stunning mate, @warzan you should have a butch at this
Yes… this wargaming lark does mean having to go through the trial of moving so many toy Soldiers… 😉
Its our exercise for the week! 🙂
Luckily as it’s all multi based, takes a few minutes to move an entire army. Very quick really.
Weren’t there crusades earlier? Am I going crazy? I’m 99% sure that there were crusade in the 9th and 10th century, aimed at the “heathens” in the East and North of Europe.
Mighty fine armies, btw.
There may well have been other wars (such as the start of the Reconquista in 1031) but historically the ‘First Crusade’ was called for by Pope Urban II in 1095 when he called for a military expedition to aid Byzantium and led to the series of Crusades to recapture the Holy Land.
The northern crusades seem to have started with the Wendish Crusade in 1147 but the official starting point was 1195 with Pope Celestine IIIs call but the Holy Roman Empire had started earlier.
