Home › Forums › Painting in Tabletop Gaming › Vallejo Air = Vallejo Colour???
I’m panic buying paints for the next few months and I plan on painting new schemes and I like following guides and I’ve run in to a query. Is a Vallejo Model Colour paint the same colour as the Vallejo Model Air paint with the same name? I see no point buying duplicate paints.
I’m looking to get VMA 052 German Grey but I already have VMC 70.995 German Grey. Are they the same?
I’m looking for VMA 053 Dark Sea Green, but I already own VMC 70.826 Dark Seagreen (No space) are they the same?
yes and no. The model colour is the standard range, the air is the same colours but pre-thinned to run through an airbrush.
The only time I specifically pick up the air is primers and metallics, I feel the metallics brush on better and have a smaller pigment so they don’t look as flecked
I don’t own any duplicate colours across VMC and VMA ranges, but I have sombre grey and scarlet red both from VGC and VGA. There, there is slight difference, with VGC being in both cases lighter than VGA counterpart. The difference isn’t huge however.
If you want I may try to take a photo.
I’m never quite sure how useful photos are for things like this. I suppose its less of an issue if the pots are in the same photo.
So, on the whole, if the names are the same (Numbers different) and the pots are not obviously different shades when I google for pics of them, I should feel comfortable switching between VGC and VGA, and between VMC and VMA?
I own a couple of colours that are named the same in both ranges – “Earth” for example. They aren’t absolutely identical but they are certainly close enough. The Model are a lot thicker so I genrally thin with a bit of the Air version if I’m planning on using both.
In my opinion, from paints I have, differences are negligible, and if you’re in need you can buy them interchangeably.
See the picture bellow, best I could take (sunny-ish weather, only natural light, no postprocessing apart from crop, all settings on auto).
Cheers guys. I’m assembling an order now for the few I still need. Seems people have already panic bought all the Matt Agrax and Nuln Oil. My supplies will just have to last.
Late to the party but the Leather Brown are very different colours in each range – at least for the bottles I have

I’ve been using Army Painter washers for years. Good stuff. I actually prefer their brown Soft Tone, since it does organic generic fantasy well, and can be used instead of Strong Tone and Flesh Tone to some extent.
“I’d say the equivalent to Agrax is Army Painter Quickshade – Strong Tone (Dark Tone for Nuln Oil).” : https://www.reddit.com/r/minipainting/comments/aj5jh1/what_is_the_vallejo_andor_armypainter_equivalent/
Panic buying?! Who’s panic buying!?! We need to invest in all the Kickstarters we can that will take months upon months to arrive thereby giving us something to look over with Giftmas glee. Lol
