A First Glimpse At The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug
June 13, 2013 by brennon
Some of you might have already seen this but check out the trailer for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug above! You get to see your favourite Dwarves, Bilbo, Gandalf and even some familiar faces from the depths of Mirkwood!
It certainly is a neat trailer with plenty of action to look forwards too. I don't want to spoil it for people who have just scrolled down to read this but I can't wait to follow Gandalf and Radagast on their adventures.
Also what do you think of the reveal at the end? Should they have shown that particular face?
Let me know in the comments below.

All looks good ….besiiiiides… Smaug …which is a real bummer. Anyhow , I am thrilled.
Ditto
Missed the first film 🙁 But I won’t miss this one
I don’t know… I really like that glimpse we got of the dragon !
Dinosaur-like ? A bit, and so what ?
Expressive ? Very much so. Impressive ? Oh yes. Awesome ? Totally !
I find him rather badly animated and somewhat comically looking and out of place of the aesthetics of the rest of the film in this particular shot. Simply not my cup of tea that is all I expressed.
No better than the bunnies in the first film… I was more shocked at the CGI elves in this trailer, personnally. But I see what you mean.
Not exactly a massive dragon I was hoping for.
The size doesn’t bother me as much as the head seems based on a dinosaur and the movement looks clunky
It isn’t Smaug. Everyone knows what Smaug looks like because Tolkien painted him. lol
OH, please…
Everyone knows the stone giants weren’t like what they showed in the film, and everyone knows the dwarves didn’t have Disney beards.
It’s THEIR take on the stuff. The first film was great anyway !
I was talking with my tongue in cheek Romain 😉
I appreciate that the production design and director will put their stamp on the way things look.
It isn’t a dealbreaker for me at all.
I missed the first film at the cinema because things didn’t pan out for me rather than snubbing the film. Was very disappointed not to see it on the big screen. DVD on my laptop just ain’t the same. 🙁
Really want to make sure I see the second one and make the most of the grand landscapes that were so amazing in the LoTR
I was a little put off by Smaug to begin with but I think it’s going to be one of those things where once you see the whole dragon you’ll see the proportions etc. I can’t wait to here him speak.
As for other aspects of the trailer. Lots of ace stuff from Mirkwood and I think Legolas and Tauriel look pretty ace. She was one of the things I was unsure of but she seems to have a neat role in the adaptation and is pretty bad ass too from what we’ve seen of the fighting there.
Obviously there are going to be some purists who don’t take to the changes but they should remember, as I mentioned above, its an adaptation for film fleshing out parts of the story for the screen.
There is apparently a new production video on the way soon as well so we’ll get more behind the scenes content then I’d expect!
BoW Ben
Viewer 1: “Oh wow, it looks like an awesome action movie about fantasy chase sequences and fighting.”
Viewer 2: “It’s The Hobbit.”
Viewer 1: “Oh… Wait, what?”
I’ll have my rose tinted glasses firmly on. Whatever it’s like I’m going to love it.
But then you won’t be able to see it in 3D! 😛
That didn’t look too bad besides of way Smaug looked like.
I love the fact they have brought Dol Guldur and the necromancer vrs white council in. Makes Bilbos quest feel more Epic early in the trilogy. This looks like a lot of fun. The woodelves are awesomesauce in the MEarth movies. Think perhaps too awesome…..
I know right, haha 😀 I hope we get to see Galadriel get in on the action too. Like a duel vs The Necromancer or at least destroying Dol Guldur with her Singing Spell. 🙂
I think that Smaug looks very much like a dinosaur in appearance, but I really don’t see this as a problem tbh. This is mainly because the word on the street is that Smaug’s great great granddad had a loving relationship with a T’rex and due to genetics being passed down on the paternal side of the family, it resulted in Smaug’s appearance. Anyone who has a problem with this is obviously racist, heartless and insensitive with regards to the love they both shared. When Tolkien painted Smaug, it was very well documented that he NEVER actually met him for a studio session, as he couldn’t fit in the studio. Smaug was also restricted in movement due to an outbreak of foot and mouth that originated from Narnia. With all this evidence available, I think the film crew did a really good job of Joan Collins (plays as Smaug) make up.
Mick
Oh my ! I almost didn’t recognize Joan, there… Almost. 😉
Joan Collins is Smaug!
Maybe that we didn’t recognise her because she WASN’T wearing any slap! lol
Right better head off to the secret safe house before The Joan Collins Appreciation Society catch up with me!!
Heres my two cents, Loved the LOTR trilogy, the reality brought to Middle Earth by Jackson was verry cool. The Hobbit, in my verry humble opinion, would have been better directed by Del Toro for exactly the opposit reason, to make the Hobbit more fantastical. Jacksons tried to do it, just check out the stone giants for an example, but it just didnt do it for me. Yeah I totally get that it quite rightly should be pitched at a younger audience with some comedic elements and tongue in cheek scenes, the Goblin King for example, borderline ridiculious and wasnt half as horible as it felt in the book. And thats saying a lot as the book has some major flaws, our hero being unconcious for the battle of the five armies for example. A major event in the story told in less than a cople of pages if memory serves me. Im looking forward to that the most from these films.
The scene with Radagast being chased by the warg riders was like something from Benny Hill, I totally hated that bit, for all his stupid running around the wargs are only a hundred yards or so away from the company when it finally finishes, one of the worst scenes ever! I actually prefered the film in regular 2D, the 3D lost a lot of the action for me. I will see parts two and three but Im not in any sense excited like I was for LOTR. Ah well, theres always the inevitable remakes to come I suppose!
I dont realy mind Jackson filling out the story, it needs it. Not too sure about the new characters though. Dol Guldor looked cool but wasnt surreal at all, and thats what I would have prefered rather than the tagged on Witch King jumping out of a rock bit, ah well.
As for Smaug…meh. Its hard to form an opinion before hearing him speak. I want to like these films but Im just not feeling it. Maybe Desolation will change my opinion, I realy hope it does.

I believe that they have searched through a lot of old footage of George Formby for the audio of Smaug in order to appear to the older generation. How Smaug will break into song will be a different matter. Personally can’t wait for the arrow to sink into him as he screams “HAHA NEVER TOUCHED MEEEEE” 😛 hehe
Turned out nice again.
Oh so want Smaug to move slowly and menacingly, steam issuing forth from his nostrils…
His body starts coming into view
to reveal tiny Trex arm that start to strum a ukulele
hehe… with me little stick of Blackpool rock!
I want to see that happen so much
I think the probability of you seeing that happen is very good%. Especially if you buy a cinema value bucket of coke for just £29.99. In fact, you will probably be tripping on E numbers for weeks afterwards.
Fun Fact: The Bucket that they serve the coke in, were originally designed to be used as male urinals so you never have to leave your seat. Due to sever injurys to the male member when extracting out of the cap (similar to a pikes teeth. Easy to get in, but against the flow of teeth on the way out), the product had to be recalled and only used to drink out of.
Smaug-ok by me. He’s big. Glowing eyes were in the original book, if anyone else here has read it. The wide shot of ruined Dale and Erebor in the background is fabulous. King Thranduil’s halls are magnificent. I am not going to speculate on the action/precise story thread as trailers can be a bit misleading – after all, some of the Gandalf in Dol Guldur stuff was in the first trailer for An Unexpected Journey. I am looking forward to December 13th.
Might as well just have made the film animated, no?
What I don’t get is this: If this movie ends with Bilbo in Smaugs chamber, then what is left for the third movie? Will they spend three hours on Smaug taking a short flight and the and the Battle of Five Armies?
Well looking forward to watching this!
Looking forward to this, even though Smaug,s head does look a little goofy (given that we really only saw an outline).
Mute the trailer and try playing this at the same time for the soundtrack http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dDhO4wS-0k
