Meet The Team – Say Hi To OTT Freeland!
March 12, 2021 by brennon
Free is the newest member of the OnTableTop (OTT) team and so we wanted to make sure you got a chance to get to know her!
With that in mind, I asked Free a few questions about tabletop gaming and where it all began...
Introduce yourself and what your role is as part of the OTT Team!
My name is Freeland, but everybody calls me Free. I smile a lot, with the hope that the smile is contagious to those around me. Sharing good vibes, a 'puppies and rainbows' personality with a spice of Edgar Allan Poe. The smell of a new card deck straight from the pack to me is a smell unlike no other - to me, it is as nostalgic as the smell of a library. If you hadn't guessed by now, I am a card and board game fanatic.
At OnTableTop I will have my fingertips to the keys, reporting and writing on the newest of the news for predominately card games and board games. However, you will see articles surrounding miniatures games news from me too. I have been fortunate enough to be immersed in miniatures gaming by my wonderful colleagues here at OnTableTop and Wayland Games.
What's your favourite form of tabletop gaming?
Do I prefer board games or card games? That is the question - and it sure is a toughie! On one hand (pun very much intended), card games are my reason for loving tabletop gaming in the first place - there is nostalgia and it opened a whole new world for me to explore.
On the other hand, board games have come so far since I first started playing. It is not just as simple as playing Risk and Catan any more. There are a plethora of games readily available, all containing a new miniature universe in each individual box. I cannot commit to one defining favourite form. However, the love I share for board games and card games are uncomparable, so I choose both like a spoiled child!
What is your favourite game and/or games?
If there was a game to play flawlessly, that my life depended on it: Lord Of The Rings: The Card Game would be my defining choice. Especially as the game is still expanding. They may have taken a break for 2020, but I am super excited to see what Fantasy Flight Games has next for The Lord Of The Rings: The Card Game this year in 2021.
I play a lot of board games as a way of chilling and returning to my 'zen place', as I find board gaming incredibly therapeutic - well, that depends on what game I am playing! This is why solo board games make my eyes twinkle!
As an animal lover and all things pastel-coloured, I knew that I was going to love Wingspan just by looking at the box! I would describe this game to be included in my perfect Sunday. Feed the birds, lay their eggs and unlock abilities, and all from the comforts of my sofa in a pair of fluffy socks over, and over again.
How did you get into tabletop gaming?
As a girl of eight years old, I became consumed with the world and creatures that dwelled within Middle-earth. My eyes glistened as I feverishly turned through each page of The Hobbit, and as I grew older, I progressed into all of the other Tolkien adventures such as the Children of Hurin, and of course, The Simarillion.
I was so excited to embark on an adventure with the Ents of Fangorn, and Beorn near the river Anduin. But my adventures were hindered and cut short: by repeatedly turning over the last pages of the books, and reaching the end credits of the extended editions of the movies on a loop.
This was until a Christmas gift changed my intrigue, I too could now traipse through the Mines of Moria across the Bridge of Khazad-dûm. I could now be part of the unfolding events at the Battle of Helms Deep, shouting "break the dam, release the river!", and other obscure quotes at the top of my lungs as if I were really there.
I had travelled there and back again, and The Lord Of The Rings: The Card Game allowed me to be part of the unfolding events time and time again. Introducing me to a tabletop world of opportunity.
What are you most looking forward to in tabletop gaming currently?
The use of Kickstarter for tabletop gaming has been inspiring! I lurk Kickstarter most days, in search of new adventures to embark on. But specifically, the next title I am looking forward to is Root: The Marauder Expansion.
I enjoy Root for the chance to explore. As I find a lot of board games may be replayable, but it is not often where a game continuously expands and exploration is in your favour. Root and its evergrowing expansions make me feel like I am playing a new game each time I start. I already own everything from Root - and this train is not stopping!
What's a side of tabletop gaming that you'd love to explore more?
As you have probably realised, I am somebody who enjoys being engrossed in story and campaign when I game. Whilst I am not knee-deep in board game components, I am attached to my PS5 controller and my favourite genre is of course RPG. Yet the world of RPG gaming on the tabletop - I am merely a novice.
I have started to learn the mechanics of Malifaux. With a large scope of fantasy characters to choose from, I was drawn to the Neverborn and their dark and mysterious mannerisms. As a keen creative in my personal time, I have now decided to wield my airbrush for a new purpose - to paint and to get my miniatures tabletop ready so I can learn and explore a new avenue in tabletop gaming.
I am keen and fully equipped, with Sting in one hand and a Pokeball in the other. I am hoping to share my love for board and card games, and learn a lot more about RPGs and Miniatures Games on the journey ahead.
Thanks, Free and we can't wait to dive into more from the tabletop world with you as part of OTT!
Make sure to keep an eye out for more from Free over the coming weeks in the news section and as part of the Weekender team. There is a wide tabletop gaming world out there and it will be fun to explore more facets of it.
What got you started in tabletop gaming and would you like to see more of these team deep dives?

Welcome ?
Thank you! 🙂
Welcome to the madhouse
Happy to contribute to the madness ?
Welcome. Take a cookie. Coffee? Tea?
Btw: I don’t trust people who smile all day… usually they are up to something 😉
Does iced tea or coffee count!?
Lots of people say that hehe, there’s so much doom and gloom out there – I like to sprinkle a lil positivity where I can is all. ?
“sprinkle a lil positivity” You’re giving away free sprues of tiny fighting men? Huzzah! 8)
Welcome aboard Free and thanks for sharing!
For me gaming started before I can even remember. Family gatherings always seemed to have some board game or card game being broken out (Risk, Trivial Pursuit, Scotland Yard, Mille Bornes, traditional card games etc). That eventually lead into D&D (AD&D at the time) and then Magic came out. Then of course there was that fateful day I passed by the display cabinet full of painted minis…it’s been a long fun road every since 🙂
Thank you so much!
You have had quite the journey! It seems like family gatherings are the catalyst for a lot of people, then we just end up progressing to become proud hoarders haha 🙂
Welcome you poor girl. ? Got mixed up with this lot, you should be glad of social distening, it might save you of the worst.Great to have you abord!
Hahaha! They’ve been nothing but angels! ? Thanks a million, so happy to be on board! 🙂
“They’ve been nothing but angels!”
Now we know somethings up…blink three times if you need an extraction team…
Welcome Free. I’m looking forward to some extra coverage on all things board game.
Thanks! It’s great to have somewhere to talk about them and share with lovely people as such as yourself! 🙂
Always nice to see a new face, more so when we’re not saying goodbye to an old one.
Looking forward to more board games, and maybe being convinced to try more card games.
Exactly! Just another person to join the team without the hardship of losing anybody!
There are sooo many board and card games out there to try. Looking forward to seeing what catches your eye. 🙂
How deep have you gone into the Lord of the Rings LCG? I couldn’t keep pace with the number of expansions. Do you have a standout set that you would recommend?
Lord of the Rings LCG has been my mighty obsession, so my collection ranges from the core box, expansions, saga expansions, nightmare decks, adventure packs and scenarios! But this is something that I have built up over time. I can sympathise that getting into it can be soooo intimidating with all the sets that are out there.
My personal favourite past the Core Box is the Khazad-dûm expansion. This gives you lots of new cards, scenarios, encounter sets, heroes, allies, attachments, and events – and makes it super easy to expand on the core box’s adventures. 🙂
Sounds like we need a Let’s Play (I should probably check to see if there was one already 🙂
LOTR LCG is on my radar for sure! 😉
Welcome! It is nice to have another part of the OnTableTop team!
Thank you, delighted to be part of such an awesome team! 🙂
Wellcome and very good luck to you. I’m looking forward to reading your posts.
Thank you very much. Pleasure to be here! 🙂
Welcome Free! 🙂
Sending love from Germany!
Oh! A familiar face! Thanks for the warm welcome 🙂
Welcome Free!
A card and board game enthusiast is a spot on OTT that has been missing for too long, look forward to seeing what you do!
I mis Az and his love of card/board games. Though I can say I am almost certainly not a board gamer, I did end up picking up a few I seen him demo and enjoyed them greatly.
Great choice on Malifaux, love the models, not so sure on the game so will be good to hear about the beginners perspective once in a while.
Thank you! I plan on spreading the love for all thing board and card game, whilst learning as much as I can about other aspects of tabletop games that I haven’t dipped into yet! 🙂
I understand completely, but in direct contrast. Being a board/card gamer; I see lots of miniatures games that I’d like to pick up due to everybody on here speaking about such awesome miniatures game systems… I can foresee myself becoming a more evolved hoarder now! ?
Welcome, welcome indeed………. yet I think @warzan has given me yet,…. another person to,….”infect” with a love of the….. ANZAC bikkies!!!!
Welcome to our slightly crazed, odd bunch of misfits! I’m sure you’ll fit right on in with the rest of us. Just be careful of the @sundancer chap he’s a little odd at times,……(basil fawlty impersonation) Don’t mention the war!!! think he’s still little upset that he lost that last battle he played.
Thank you very much! You had me captivated at bikkies! ?
Had such a warm welcome from everybody, proud to join the misfits! 🙂
Hello! Rest assured you’re joining a great bunch of people, really nice community that’s been built up over the years.
They are indeed! After collaborating with everybody a few times over the past year, the team have welcomed me with open arms and I have been smiling since the second I started. Thanks for the support! 🙂
Hello and welcome to the fun.

I got into gaming via some hand typed sheets with the rules to D&D way back in the 80’s.
Looking forward to seeing what seeing more board games, big fan of wingspan I have all the expansions.
Ohhh another Wingspan fan! 🙂 Glad to see another shares the love I do for the game! 🙂

Welcome Free!
Welcome to the team… now where do you stand on Burrows and Badgers or Saga “for example”?
Anthropomorphic animal miniatures seems like an amazing place to start… *googles miniatures and where I can get them from* 🙂
Welcome, hope it goes well
Thank you so much! 🙂
Always nice to have a fresh perspective on all things gaming. And a mention of Poe makes me happy 🙂
And always love talking to those who share my love in all things Poe! 🙂
When I seem to talk to people about the reasons why I love his writing, and how he structures it – people seem to fall asleep haha.
Always amazing meeting another likeminded individual 🙂
Welcome Freeland…….bout time they got you back on here!
Looking forward to your insights on gaming, and keeping the boyz inline. ?
Hahah! Thank you very much – such a pleasure! 🙂
well i have to say you cant beat a bonny lass with a big smile to brighten up any envirnment, welcome to the madness of OTT if that crowd doesnt keep that smile going nothing will.
Smiles all round for me! 🙂
Welcome to the ……whatever we are calling ourselves, i think of it as extended family ( lots of familiar faces, sometimes you want to hit someone, sometimes you wan to say…Excellent idea man.
First board game, Avalon Hill Panzer Leader and Chess ( brother and father respectively ) so Chess got me started but then picked up Panzer Leader and tanks away…..played them alot and fondly the massive games and tactics needed. Still have my old copy, and old chess board, 2 things to cherish from my youth ( along with my Solido Tiger ).
So, the only question is, which path to conquest will Free take? , will Freeland rule? ( sounds kinda catchy don’t you think ….)
Thank you! Honestly, the more people that welcome me, the more I realise how much of an awesome community there is here. 🙂
Nice to see you are still cherishing your old board games. I have used my first copy of LOTR TCG to death, have bought a new one – and still keep it for the memories!
Welcome to the OTT family.
We can all use a little more sunshine in our daily lives 🙂
I remember when Catan didn’t exist and boardgaming was about as niche as you could get as anything more advanced than Risk required that you knew people who also knew people who may have heard of that sort of thing.
I think people in English speaking countries don’t realise how lucky they are that they never had to wait for translations just to play a ‘simple’ game like Catan.
Discovering that first shop filled with these strange books in English was the start of my collecting hobby.
Finding Beasts of War has been the best thing ever, although my wallet disagrees …
The community is one of a kind.
Awh thank you so much! So happy to be part of such a special community. 🙂
Greetings and welcome to the madness! 🙂
Thank you kindly! Embracing the madness for sure 🙂
Its so nice to see another fan without a beard! welcome!
Hahaha I was worried I would have to grow one to fit the uniform… thank you for the warm welcome! 🙂
Welcome to the team, Free!
Thank you kindly! 🙂
Welcome to the madhouse please collect your straitjacket as you enter the facility.
Collect? You act like I wasnt mad already! 😉
Lol
Welcome! Malifaux is great (although models can be a bit challenging if you’ve not done a lot of work on plastic models and don’t have small tools!) and the setting and lore are super fun! Plus their is the Through The Breach RPG that uses a lot of the mechanics… so you’ll be all set in the world of Malifaux soon! Which Neverborn master are you leaning towards?
thankfully there are the new preassembled starter sets coming this year which should make it an easier entry for people
I know there are really so much of a choice to choose from. Luckily I have a friend who is a bit of a Malifaux guru, so he is teaching me the ways of Malifaux once the world returns back to normal!
I have the Titania Core Box which I have started to paint, and going to be getting the Waldgeists soon to join the crew. 🙂
I’m sure the enormous Malisaurus Rex has nothing to do with the choice of Titania… I had picked up The Dreamer to be able to try out my Marcus/Chimera crew in Neverborn with the eventual goal of adding Titania and the ‘Rex just for fun!
Strangely enough – no! It was just a happy coincidence! I love to woodland and fairy folk and actually bought the set before the release of Malisaurus Rex. Just haven’t had the chance to paint them all up yet! 🙂 Ohhh that sounds interesting, gonna need the ‘rex methinks! hehe 🙂
Welcome Free, (from Australia) I hope you enjoy yourself here, I look forward to seeing what you think of Malifaux as it is a game I played once but always wanted to do more with.
Hey there! A big hearty thank you from London! 🙂
Hey Free *waves* Welcome
Hey there! *waves happily back* Thank you for the warm welcome! 🙂
Welcome to our community and thanks for sharing your journey with us.
My hobby journey started in the mid 80s when I was a 11 years old, being introduced to roleplaying games by making new friends in a new place. We were the archetypical 80s school nerds of early teens who met several days a week after school, playing pen&paper RPGs like Rolemaster, MERS, Cyberpunk, Star Wars, or Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. In the latter I was intrigued by the two pages showing exquisitely painted miniatures of adventurers and of villains. Back in the day, it was a bit harder for a young teen to get your hands on miniatures, but I eventually discovered Warhammer Fantasy Battles and several shops selling citadel metal miniatures, and I managed to infect a significant proportion of our gaming group with the tabletop miniatures hobby.
I was already into painting and drawing as a kid and very good at it, and I naturally took to miniatures painting, winning my first contest at the age of 14. I’m still painting miniatures, and I’m also building (and completely scratch-building) exhibition-quality models, mainly from Star Wars – my oldest and most enduring love. I’ve become disillusioned with Games Workshop half a decade ago and don’t play their games any longer. However, having been basically a GW-purist before, this opened my field of view to all those fantastic games which exist outside the narrow spectrum of the GW-hobby, and I’m glad I did turn my back on GW because of this. I also still enjoy playing pen&paper RPGs with a few friends I still have from my old school days. Since then, the vast majority of friends and people I cherrish I met through our hobby.
We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.
– George Bernard Shaw
Wow! Thank you for sharing your journey too! I am always so fascinated to see how people got into their hobby, so thank you so much for sharing it with me.
I will never stop playing, not ready to surrender myself to mundane and boring anytime soon! hehe 🙂
Welcome, I take it you are going to be working like Ben remotely from the studio rather than being at OTT?
Hey there! I sure am, but I am only in London, so hoping to change that and travel in when possible when the world returns back to normal! 🙂
Hey Freeland !! ypu play poemon go too? welcome in our crazy Cult Of Games !
I haven’t played pokemon go in a while, however my Pokemon cards and my Nintendo Switch are never too far from my possession! 🙂
And please, call me Free, everybody does! 🙂
Hello Free – I should also like to wish you a warm welcome and am looking foward to you sharing more of your enthusiasm for Hobby Board and Card Games.
Already a big fan of Wingspan (or Flügelschlag as it is called here in Germany), though have not yet tried either Everdell or Root. Would very much appreciate a “compare and contrast” review of the two games, if you and Ben and Gerry could please oblige.
Anyway, excellent to have you in the team and on The Weekender.
Thank you for the welcoming! 🙂 So nice to share with others something that I love so dearly. Looking forward to sharing more with y’all in the future.
Bienvenue dans ce culte Free 🙂

Thanks for the warm welcome. 🙂
Finally! Someone on the team who will get into Malifaux!
Ohhh you are a Malifaux fan!? There is so much to go through with Malifaux, so I am looking forward to sharing my journey with you! 🙂
Welcome Free, keep a tazer handy to keep em in line 😉
haha! thank you so much for the warm welcome 🙂
Welcome @free to the insanity that has kept us truely sane for years… Although and your not truly inducted into the inner circle of the Cult until you have experienced the Friday night Bootcamp kebab … its become a legendary over the years much to certain OTTers delight/Chagrin. Still that will have to wait until the world is returned to more normal times.
I was sold at Friday Night Kebab… 🙂
Thanks for the warm welcome, and looking forward to eating, drinking and being merry with all ya’ll in the future! 🙂
Sorry Rob wasn’t completely clear about what happens – drink lots, then wander around for ages to find the kebab shop (which is always the same one and hasn’t changed location and is right next to the Office…) this has happened every single bootcamp (we’ve attended)
Where do I sign up? haha
And I have attended a fair few ?
Welcome Free,
Looking forward to seeing some more board game content as this is something I have been doing more of. Mansions of madness is my favourite. I’d love to see a lets play of the LOTR card game as I am also a big Tolkien fan and play a lot of Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game from GW.
Will you be turning up on the XLBS to show off your Malifaux progress?
