More chance of Romulus and Remus returning from the dead to build Rome for Lloyd.

So you’re saying there is a chance? 😉

“Scientists have calculated that the chances of something so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one.
But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.” – Terry Pratchett, Mort.

Clearly you have seen one of my players rolls d20’s. The number of times he can fumble rolls in an evening.

Trying to make the internet a more enjoyable thing in my life has been a focus for six or seven months now. @sundancer pointed me to Mastodon and, after the work you have to put in to get up and running there, it has been a lovely experience of social media. I deleted my last meta account yesterday (other than WhatsApp which sadly because of work I can’t get rid of). Going back to reading blogs has also been a joy recently – seeing people excited, even or perhaps especially when it is something I know nothing about feels like what I loved about the internet twenty years ago.

Matt Colville put up a video this past week that runs along similar themes. Lifting up interesting channels and getting something out of the platform that enriches your life rather than what the vast majority of “content” does. https://youtu.be/RbfBhwkEQ_M?si=zoek4jt3QqvBBqD5

In terms of YouTube channels, most of the ones I’d recommend have already been mentioned. I’d add in Battlestreams in Middle Earth, The B1M and Games Night.

Came across this video last night and really liked it. Has a similar vibe to Boylei or Gameyy Builds but the narration is all “in world”. https://youtu.be/OuAhYBYCx08?si=ULRHkwIAym-MIcws

@gorram thanks for those channels, but oh man … that was a weird video.
Not so sure about the music choice, but the narration was silly … just the way we like it.

Thanks for the videos @gorram  Not my usual fare at all but highly enjoyable nonetheless.  Enthusiasm is infectious.

Mastodon is like a euro-Reddit? Different. I browse Reddit anonymously to not get the algorithm fed. Maybe I’ll signup for Mastodon since it’s looking different.

The key aspect of Mastodon is its decentralized nature.

That allows for pockets of positive to exist amongst the click-bait chasing negative drains.
Centralized social media will be doomed to chase the negative feedback loop, because negativity => interaction => clicks => views => ad-revenue.

No, Mastodon is one part of a wider network called “the fediverse”. At first glance it’s “Twitter from when it was new and good and no algorithm was there”.  As @limburger said it is decentralised as are all parts of the fediverse. There are multiple systems that started as a mimic of things like Instagram (PixelFed), Facebook (friendica), Twitter/X (Mastodon) and even YouTube (PeerTube). But the great thing is: each server is independent. So no VC can come in and buy the service and make it shit. Yes a single instance can go down for what ever reason but you then just migrate to a different one. And you only need one account to access all. If you need an account in the first place. PixelFed and PeerTube are perfectly usable just as guests. But if you have an account, let’s say Mastodon, you can use that account to follow someone on PeerTube, on friendica or PixelFed.

That is made possible by the ActivityPub protocol. Everything that supports this can be seen and found inside the fediverse.

And now my favourite part: ActivityPub is available as a Plugin for WordPress so my blog is it’s on little server in the fediverse and people can follow, share and comment.

Come to think of if, since OTT is a WP blog it could also be connected to the fediverse. Though I’m not sure how much stress that would put on the poor hamsters XD

@sundancer that makes it FAR more interesting! Thanks for the summary. I will sign up now, I think.
