Yippee got my ticket ‘Der Afika Korps’
guten Nachmittag mein Kammaradden!
And in!! Although my German only really stretches to getting beer and what I learned from Commando comics as a kid
Google is my friend, And odd bits I picked from serving 3 months in Berlin in 1979, apparently my bad German is in a Berlin accent!
Woo I am onboard with the British! See you all there.
@brennon What sort of time will the guys be allowed in Friday as this will help decide flight times?
We should be open early on the Friday 🙂
Thanks guys I will book an early flight then
By the way thanks for organising this to coincide with My 60th on 14th, but not doing it on that weekend , Kevin’s sister would never forgive me if didnt attend my own birthday bash, she’s been planning her Steam punk Dress for months.
@warzan will be able to answer that for you. If it’s like usual it will be sort of late afternoon but I’m sure Warren can be more specific.
the bar is open and serving from around 11am
what’s that you’re saying there Gerry?! 😉
I was saying I’ll get the first round in, I’m pretty sure I offered that when you were a half a world away
I’ll drink to that! Only two weeks left over here. One week for m’wee dog as she flies out before us.
grand job, the craic’ll be 90
Wheres the new pub you found?
it’s on in the town near the train station. I’ll keep hunting for others
I remember there was a couple I spotted on way from Train station last time.
There are 4 right next to the train station but I would recommend Fairleys.
I had been using the clyde
There’s a bar, I never get past the painting area. No 3am visit from you Lloyd and Rob this time!
Lol
Bar you say? Sounds… Intriguing ?
@laughingboy would have gone Brits but already have a British force at home, including 3 honeys, Crusers, bren carriers and complete troop of LDRG and a Matilda called Errol with Terry Pratchets Watch as the crew.
No idea what I am doing so went with the home team 😀 looking to learn lots over the weekend and if it was anything like the last one I just know it will be a great weekend.
good man yourself, no need to know what you’re doing, I’ll be drilling out the barrels at a bench if anyone needs me
I only looked at what you get video after I booked ticket, Knowing waht I’m doing will never catch on, I work for NHS!
Sweet!
@notyat reserved hotel couple days back to be on safe side, going on Thursday, return Mon,
Need to sort out flighs now.
Just doing Friday to Sunday at this one due to having only a few days holiday left
I’ll actually watcth the blog at Lunch.
Is it just me or how does this work? You get a 600 point Bolt Action army and you walk away with 1000 points of Bolt Action goodness. ?
I unfortunately can’t make it because my wallet hates me and doesn’t allow me to spend that kind of money. ??
You get more stuff as the weekend progresses 😉
so like real wars it will turn into an escalation and arms race?
Gives you chance to not paint more!
don’t worry I never paint more
But you do, do it with style!
I’m in with DAK. No doubt I’ll get a British Force as well ?
Opening Friday morning-ish sounds great. Won’t stop me from having a proper fried breakfast first tho!
Can’t wait!!!
Andy I don’t think they have the lighting in yet, if they don’t do you want me to bring lamps? Or is the plan still to game more than paint?
Tally Ho!!
Going with the home team, knock Jerry for six, what?
Just need flights and hotel now
you’re going to knock me for what now? o.O
Does that mean its Herr Gerry all weekend then!
I always play the Germans matey as my collections of madness will testify to
All that 88 goodiness then!
As an added bonus you get lots of baddies for Pulp Fiction Indiana Jones games!
Though you would need figures with RPG7’s to make it authentic
Meant the generic Jerries rather than the specific Jerry
well alright then, but I’ll be keeping my eye on you. *peers*
At least Gerry going Jerry would stop confusion on day, as in ‘Here we have Gerry painting Tommy!’
can we get a Thomas to play the Jerry, in which case I would swap ^^
Tour mind works like mine, that was my thought!
Definitely going to need some desert paints and sprays in the Army Painter store for this one.
Got some Vallejo Field grey, I used a German grey green for the main coats from them as well, but think I used it all,
I will bring some paint this time rather than poaching al of yours 🙂
Congrats to all those lucky devils who get a chance to go . Those of us left behind will be thinking about how much fun you’ll be having , and how much we hate you ,lol . I for one will be consoling myself by binge watching , The Desert Rats , Raid On Rommel , Ice Cold In Alex , and of course Rommel staring James Mason and as many other cheesy 60s movies about the Desert War as I can find in my DVD collection . Maybe I’ll pick up a Rubicon Crusader kit and get so modelling in as well .
Funnilly enough got some of those moves on dvd, was planning to take them so they can play them in background.
lol … I only managed to check my options at work only to find the tickets were gone when I finally got home.
oh well … it’s not like my mountain of plastic, metal and resin isn’t big enough as is.
It would have been fun though.
Glad I got a ticket. Was mid meeting when I excused myself to buy a ticket. Going good old British. Then will try to do Scottish with then. Plenty to chose from in the period. So looking forward to this now!!!
Same here @soapdodger, it was a family crisis I needed to deal with. It would have been a crisis for my family if I hadn’t got a ticket, cos I’d be such a miserable bugger! Even more than I normally am ???
If only they knew it was very important little toy soldiers. 😀
Well congrats to all its sold out!
not bad 2 hours and 20 odd mins from @warzan putting it up.
oh and to get us in the mood

Really sad to have missed out on this one, but looking forward to watching all the coverage and seeing all your happy faces!
Booked and done! British all the way, well you can’t be an ex desert rat and be anything else ?
YES! Very glad you made it, sir! Is it weird I was refreshing and refreshing … checking to see if you, @noyjatat , @suetoniuspaullinus , @avernos , and others made it?
Okay … NOW I can start to get excited.
Yup that was my thought!
One big plus plane back is not till 8pm on Monday so will have time to fit in visit to HMS Caroline in Belfast.
Welcome worth a visit. Friend ( you remember Ewan @avernos) is a tour guide on it
I still game with him on Wednesday nights, we talk about it often and his hatred of all the other staff for not having a clue about anything. It’s a delight to listen to
Lol. I can imagine.
@oriskany, Sir, I am flattered to be in such company, this going to be epic and I’m looking forward to catching up with you and Jen. Going to travel over on Thursday night and back again on Monday evening, mainly so I can maximise gaming potential. Probably going to stay at the premier inn, and like @noyjatat I’m going to see how much I can get painted…?!
No @brucelea I am flattered! Everyone knows the “god among Beasts”, Oriskany, but I now get a mention as well! What time does your flight land on Thursday? That is when we get in and we have room for one more in the car if you need a lift.
@gladesrunner, that’s very generous but I’ve already booked a car, as I’m planning a little pilgrimage on Monday, going to pay my respects to a couple of lads who were killed during the troubles. Where are you both staying?
We actually don’t know yet. We are assured our arrangements are made (part of the
“staff” on the event), I just don’t know the details yet.
So that’s @wazan’s shed then ?? Joking apart, I’m sure the guys will have sorted something special out for you guys.
No worries, @brucelea – the shed would be fine for me … I just don’t know if it would be fine for @gladesrunner . 😮 Anyplace with an electrical outlet and a wifi connection will work for me.
It’s going to be EPIC to see everyone again, I promise I will post more later but right now it’s 2:00 AM here … trying to jump start some of the content that will roll out before and during the boot camp … now its time for a nice 4.5 hours of sleep before the start of a new day … 😐
It’s gonna be a great one buddy, glad to have you over for it.
Thanks very much, @noyjatat ! (finally getting caught up with comments). 😀
See you and Jen (I presume) in September 😉
@buggeroff – yep, we will be there, Thursday – to – Thursday. 😀 Look forward to seeing you again!
Someone has to be 😉 did you ever see the giant metal rat you guys built in Bastion? @brucelea
Unfortunately not mate, the only time I was in bastion I was stuck in the BFI and flew straight back out, they were shooting at people mate and there were too many explosions, proper dangerous and I didn’t sign up for that……..????
Did I miss it?
they’re sold out, where you interested in going to it mate?
No not really. Was kinda thinking about it but I don’t really like Bolt Action. Not really into 28mm and hate plastic figures. Ticked all the boxes really lol
Haha that’s a no then 😀
you tease Steve
It would be nice just to pop up on one of the days just to say hello to people but I’m not sure if that’s possible
That would be great! 😀
Sunday is a good time, post lunch mate, it normally gets more relaxed and starts breaking up after that as people travel home
“Free Gaming” time after the official close of the bot camp is often the best time of the weekend for me. 😀
I believe I have been “volunteered” by @buggeroff to run Gangs of Rome. He’s decent like that
Italians,Western Desert. Sort of fits
Only proper order that you get to inflict your evilness on the unsuspecting ? they deserve it
Actually just being selfish. Just want to play some more Gangs of Rome
Just got in from work and sold out. Any chance you can do something special for us backsagers like filming the key note speech.
The whole thing will be live-blogged, I think. 😀 We’ll also be rolling out some video and print content before the boot camp.
Gutted was away missed out on this, damn….but enjoy everyone who got there tickets.
Yeah, booked! So does anybody know what will be in the sets?
I’m hoping for some of the new sigmarines or maybe a titan
Johns just painted one for you!
I’m after berserkers! Or zombie bats! With a 25pdr ??
Yes, YES YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! Iv’e got myself a ticket and am looking forward to this!
A where is everyone staying?
Found a B&B called Lisnagalt Lodge that was a reasonable price, 3 miles out of Coleraine, looks easy enough to navigate on Google maps.
Very glad to hear you will be there, @damon – it will be good to meet you in person!
@oriskany, likewise, really looking forward to being part of a boot camp.
Got a couple of books lined up to get my grognard cred on point before I get there.
Fear not, @damon – we have plenty of media lined up before and during the boot camp to get everyone up to speed on the historical background, or at least as much as they want to. First parts should roll out early next week! 😀
Provisionally at Premier Inn, I know roughly where that is and I dont need a horse to get to studio
good choice:-)
Bushtown Hotel for m’self. Couple of km from teh studio. Wee walk in the morning and taxi in teh evening 🙂
Damn I missed it!
Sold out. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! AH well enjoy you lucky sods
Unlucky @buggeroff, would have been good to catch up, still there’s always Sunday gaming?
Alright Brucie. Yeah would be great to catch up. Very true about Sunday will see what i can do 😉
Hope to see you there, @buggeroff !
Cya in September matey. Will bring the die, oh my giddy aunt 😉
do you want to come?
my friend and i are on or way from Kelowna B.C. Canada
Holy hell, someone will be making a longer journey than me! 😀
Stop your grinnin and drop your linen….the Canadian contingent is formed. =)
You guys know they don’t do poutine in Northern Ireland ??
Damn….
What’s a poutine?
Now either that’s a wind up or you guys are Americans pretending to be Canucks?
Having lived in Alberta for 2 years I know that apart from some of the most jaw dropping beautiful country God ever decided to make, Canada is also graced with the cheesy, gravy covered French fry goodness that is poutine. It is the only thing that takes the chill off when you’ve been skiing at -25degC.
Looking forward to meeting you both at the boot camp.
Been to Alberta and Vancouver BC a few times myself (we have family in Alaska) – it really is ridiculously beautiful country.
You got me.
My mother’s side of the family are all from various parts of French Canada….Poutine runs through these veins. =)
Flights and hotel are booked….we are good to go.
Looking forward to meeting you all in a few short weeks.
you can usually get cheesy gravy chips in the chip shops here
It’s good from a chippy @torros but just not the same. Plus I always go for curry on chips ?
18 hours the things I do for a great game haha
Hotel sorted. Flights booked.
Looking very much forward to meeting you all!
@oriskany
I might even bring a bag of Marines, got some Japanese? ?
It’s going to be EPIC to see everyone again, I promise I will post more later but right now it’s 2:00 AM here … trying to jump start some of the content that will roll out before and during the boot camp … now its time for a nice 4.5 hours of sleep before the start of a new day … ?
Sorry, @suetoniuspaullinus – these are going to be my very first 28mm figures. For USMC vs. Japanese all I have are hex-and-counters. 🙂
Funnily enought have full platoon of U.S.Marines from the old Battle Honours 28mm range.
Tried to paint one to look like the Japaneses Translator in the film the Halls of Montezuma Sgt Johnson, but he ended up liking a marine version of Groucho Marx (looked pretty good though).
You’re in for some gaming as well as work? You batting for the home team or the dastardly Hun?
Thats the plan, will be singing Panzerlied all weekend, would have gone Home team but already have Captain Vimes his Matilda’Errol’ and a unit of LDRG led by Captain Smirk and Mr Sock at home.
Thanks, @damon ~ Yes I’ll be working a lot of the time there, but hopefully might get in a couple games. But I don’t know which army I’ll wind up with, perhaps whatever is available, if any. I’m coming with a small LRDG force – also running a small campaign, perhaps Panzer/Desert Leader during free gaming, perhaps WW 2.5 or maybe even Darkstar.
Hmm, some hex and counter action could be interesting to try
@oriskany I will have a 1500point LRDG/SAS force with me, and just to be random if people have Pacific I can bring in a small Chindits force..lol
Holy hell, @commodorerob – 1500 point LRDG force? I’m not terribly familiar with BA yet, but that seems like a really big force. The LRDG typically deployed in patrols of just a few Chevrolets and maybe a squad = one of their “T” or “G” patrols.
Then again, maybe they’re really expensive because of their elite status?
And again, I’m really not that familiar with the “nutz n boltz” of BA – so I may be off in my estimation.
Oh, and you say right in your post that it’s LRDG and SAS … gotcha.
@oriskany Remember this is BA and historical accuracy is a bit fluid in force composition.
Yep a combo of SAS and LRDG 🙂
First Lft
Medic
4x SAS Infantry Sections
MG Team
2x Jeeps
1x Chevy
4x 30 tonne trucks
what I really need is a Chaplin for the SAS
Oooh! I could do with a refresh on the Panzer Leader rules. I haven’t played it since I was a kid and I picked up a copy last year at the UK games Expo.
@damon – no worries. What I’ll do during the coming weeks is solidify what other games people are interested in so I know what to bring. I’m flying from 4300 miles away so space and weight is a premium – planning will be key. 😀
Good candidates are:
Valor & Victory … squad-based tactical (so a whole game is about a 1-2 companies)
Panzer Leader family (PanzerBlitz / Panzer Leader / Arab-Israeli Wars) … platoon-based tactical (so a whole game is a regiment-brigade)
World War 2.5 … division/brigade based operational (so a whole game is 1-2 army groups, 1.5 million men).
Seriously, @brucelea ? You have a copy of Panzer Leader, as in the old Avalon Hill game (originally published 1974? We update the game to play with the Arab-Israeli Wars rule engine (fixes many of the small rules problems with Panzer Leader) but the basics are still the same.
I was thinking of bringing Panzer Leader with some desert boards and units to fit with the theme. Would you be interested in commanding a whole regiment or brigade of 7th Armoured against 8th Panzer Regiment / 15th Panzer Division? 200-300 combined tanks? about 3000 men? 200 guns? A battle area of 40 square kilometers? 😀
Oh Hell yeah!
I have a copy of 88′ the Desert version of Panzer!
Awesome @bobcockayne !
Funnily enough @oriskany dug it out for a games day recently so if I’ve got room I’ll bring it up.
All right, sounds great. So I’ve got to start solidifying the list of what’s happening at the boot camp regarding scheduling and time and media content, etc.
Free Gaming usually starts early afternoon on Sunday. According to what @brucelea says above, we’re definitely gearing up to play a sizable game of Panzer Leader (desert 1941-42 themed). This is going to take up the bulk / all of that time. You’re certainly welcome to join us if platoon-based, command-tactical wargaming is your thing.
In fact I should probably start asking who is interested so I can see how many people we might have involved and know how large to make the game (team play).
Ok @oriskany never played Panzer Leader, Keep 88 for future date, I’m in for above.
@oriskany I think I’d like to try that as well
No worries at all, @damon ! Glad to have you with us on this! Once I get a firmed-up idea of how many people are interested, I’ll start designing and playtesting a scenario we can try.
Crikey sold out fast eh?!! Think I’ll be coming up on the Thursday – It’s a righteous wee hike for me up from Kildare to Coleraine. Better look into where to stay!
For those staying at the Premier Inn and into ancient/Dark age their is a hill fort over the river from hotel, probably about 15 mins walk, went round it last year and might do it again this year its a nice walk.
@bobcockayne Do you mean mount sandel? http://m.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=46509
Yup thats the one.
Flight and hotel booked 🙂
You sly dog @commodorerob! I thought BA wasn’t your thing? Great that you’re coming Rob, it wouldn’t be a bootcamp without you there.
BA is ok it’s not the worst game in the world 🙂 I have to be at a bootcamp…lol
Phew! world back to normal!
Gots ‘da’ git ‘dem KEBABS! 😀
@oriskany too right cannot have a Bootcamp without a trip to a Kebab shop 🙂
🙂
The Danish vikings are coming!! Me and @christianhou52hotmail-com will be landing in Belfast at 1045 Friday if everything goes well, and we booked a room at the Premier Inn. This our first historical game, usually we been playing 40k, kow, wfb, lotr and warma. So we are looking forward to our first steps in to world war II 🙂
On a site note I recently learned that my grandfather served as voluntary soldier in gaza and Egypt, just after the war. Maybe i should take a look at his old uniform, for inspiration. I think he served with 1st royal horse artillery regiment as gunner.
Looking forward to meeting you both, be ready to hit the ground running, it looks like we’ll be having loads to build and paint. It’s a really relaxed atmosphere and please don’t worry about some of us talking lots of historical nonsense, we’re just geeking out ? in a different way ???
Helena and I both managed to get tickets, whoop whoop! DAK to kick some 1st armoured ASS!
Glad to see all the crew will be there
@avenos,@laughingboy,@bobcockayne,@noyjatat,@commodorerob
@trewets great news
Velcome! to the 21st Panzer
