I wasn’t sure what to be at this year for the Spring Cleaning Challenge, but since I’ve been stuck at home and struggling to get in the hobby mindset I thought I would try something small and productive.

Recently I have been trying to reduce my hobby footprint so to speak, I’ve sold off all my Death Guard, build painted and still in box, I will do the same with my Ultramarines, leaving my first 40k love armies in my collection, Dark Angels, Black Legion, and the main one… Space Wolves.

I’ve had this box of Space Wolf bits for years, its taking up some space so Its time to build what I can from it and get the rest into my bits box. Reducing the pile of shame and hopefully feeling good about it!

Enough bodies?

Main concern here was finding enough bodies and marine legs to complete a unit… So at least 5 models needed.

When going through I’ve managed to get bits together for 9 marines, next was to decide what unit it will be so I can figure out what weapons and arms i need. The deciding factor here turned out to be the old 2nd edition Grey Hunter Pack Leader I found in my bits box.

Now I have enough bits to get to build a full 10 man Grey Hunter pack.

Something different?

My current space wolves army is painted in a slightly different style to the GW 40k Wolves, I’ve gone with the 30k amour colours, so the more grey looking, less blue grey look.

For this unit I am going to try something a little different. I feel I want to try a slightly more GW looking blue grey. I think it will still fit in my force ok, under a different Wolf lord perhaps.

I also wanted to challenge myself with the basing. I wanted to try for a rocky, icy snowy look! So am going to push the boat out and try making some resin ice look on them.

The unit is built and primed. Now waiting on an OTT store delivery of the right base colour!

Ready to go.Ready to go.

Ive gone with a bit of a zenithal prime, gone with the Mechanicus Standard Grey spray with a light spray of Grey Seer from above, hopefully I can work the Russ grey over the top when it arrives!

I have all the back packs, weapons, and shoulder pads that i need to keep separate attached to paper clips so i could spray them easily, The weapons are numbered so I should be able to mated them up with the right bodies… hopefully!

Basing

So wanting to try and up my game here… I thought of making some rock bases, with some frozen water round them.. then I can throw some snow on top tying it all together…

so first off, I made sure I had 10 32mm bases, none of the old supplied bases needed. Marines look so much better on the bigger bases!

Then needed to build them up a little with cork so that I would have some areas to fill with the resin,

next I made a bit of a mistake.. I added some crackle paint to the base in between the cork. I should have primed before I added the crackle paint.. I found that the paint didnt stick on the base too well so i had to find a way to try and seal it in.

Before that I sprayed them all with the Grey spray from GW to give me a base coat, still the crackle paint was flaking off so I turned to the Army Painter Soft Tone Dip.. Painted that on, and it seemed to have worked.

Well after the grey base, Ive added some more colours to where the ice will be..

  • First the base was painted Macragge Blue to give a deep blue.
  • Next a simple dry brush with Chronus Blue, making sure to hit as much of the crackle paint as I could
  • I then dry brushed Hellion Green in a few places to break up a bit of the blue.
  • Finally I little further dry brush with Praxeti White to pick up a few of the raised crackle paint

Last step was to add the masking tape round the base so that they are ready for the resin.. I was expecting it on the same day, sadly they has been a bit of a delay so pealing it off once done will be interesting!!!

Looking forward to the next stage!

Well I have 10 bases, and 10 marines, so although this is a test base, I just wanted to get a handle on the resin thing…

I followed the Gerry Can as best I could, and am ok with the results, I didnt have fine enough sand paper, and was impatient and maybe the first hasn’t turned out the best, a slight scuff on the top, but will be able to tidy that up a little with the next step, once a marine is attached.

Excited to try more and see how I learn!

First Grey Hunter done.

I painted up 1 marine to get a feel for the scheme I wanted to use..

Attached him to the first test base and built it up a bit to finish.

I think has turned out ok, and The colour has reallt grown on me over the grey grey!
