Green, lots and lots of green!!
After successfully completing the green on the little guys it was time to do the green skin on the dragon. I didn’t want to drybrush the highlights on him, I’ve always found drybrushed highlights on bigger models doesn’t work well if its a big contrast between the two colours. So I edge highlighted all of the relevant edges on the skin. Took an evening. And then looking at it it was a very harsh jump from one to the other.
I dulled it down with the Thrakka green. It really made a difference:
It's all in the detailing
At this point I had to pause, wasn’t entirely sure how I was going to highlight the green, and I wanted to sort this before doing the green on the big guy. There was an awful lot of it, and I wanted to get it right. I decided to experiment on the babies (I’m expecting a visit from the unethical treatment of fantasy creatures any day now)
I chose nurgling green as it was still green but much, much brighter..... in fact it was too bright so after drybrushing the little guy to pick out the raised areas I had to dull it down. At the back of my really useful box of GW paints I had some oldschool Thracka green wash. A quick coat of that and the skin looked great (well, I think it looks great and they are my toy dragons so thhhhhhp! to all the haters. You'll notice the horns and tongue are done on this one now as well. The tongue was just painted gw dwarf flesh (or whatever current gw name it is now!) then washed with a red wash. The bone was done by painting it umber then khaki, then bone then white on the tipsYou’ll notice I have done the eyes on the big guy. This was because it was easier to do now and if i sploshed yellow about or screwed up the black pupil it would be easier to sort if there werent highlights in and around the eyes. I painted them orange, then yellow closer to the centres then a black line for the pupil (I cheat and use a black 0.1mm fineliner pen for eyes). Finally a small white dot on the yellow to represent a reflection and then a gloss varnish coat to give the idea of a wet sheen
How to paint your dragon
This isn’t a guide on how to paint your dragon, I hasten to add! It was a terrible pun on the book name ‘How to Train your Dragon’ This post is about how I painted my dragons.
Some of the pictures were in the earlier post ‘Here be Dragons’ but shhhhh, no one will know if we don’t tell them. I’ve also edited the pictures so they are now in the correct format (for your knowledge, the OTT forum doesn’t like portrait pictures much).
All of the dragons were given a Rhinox Hide spray undercoat, for two reasons, one This resin likes rattle cans better than the vallejo airbrush primer and two, I wanted a dark brown colour to give a more earthy look
Anyhoo, enough rambling, time for some pictures
The bellies for all 3 were done the same way. They were basecoated Vallejo brown earth, then heavily drybrushed with gold brown. Then an Agrax earthshade wash and finally a drybrush of Vallejo Game Air BonewhiteThis post is just a filler
..well not a filler, but about filling. Once I’d glued them together and swore at myself for creating gaps, I started to fill the gaps with greenstuff and attempted to match the detailing (no sculptor I!!!) I also added a few more rocks to the big dragons base, it’s 120mm across so the big flat areas would look big and flat. I used milliput for this, something I’m terrible with. It was just roughly circular bits blobbed down, kind of shaped and then textured by pushing a stone into it. Did the trick, as you’ll see in the painting bit in the next post
Now, my sculpting/filling skills are weak so on the final models in a couple of places you can see a bit of a seam, I always forget green stuff shrinks but it’s not too bad. Still, that was them built. They then waited a while whilst I painted the halflings.
Next post is about ruining the sculpts with my haphazard painting
Whats big scaly and hides in the woods?
This post is a bit of a visit to earlier in the project. I built all the models at the same time, so these build pictures are from a while ago
First is the components and how they looked glued together before filling. There was very little in the way of cleanup on any of the detail. The gates were generally on bits out of site or that would be inside a join
Once they were built there was a bit of gap filling to do. Mainly because I was over zealous when filing down the gates from production
Other Kickstarter Miniatures
As well as the halflings, and the dragons (more on them soon!!!) I got a free troggle (think raccoon troll) as well as the Explorer and his magical Journal. The Explorer is basically the person who describes the world. The fluff is written from his point of view. He’s a wizard and the floating book is a spell book. In the game he can be used as a mercenary for any force.
Troggle:“Troggles are a small subspecies of Troll that can be found all throughout Upper ArcWorlde. They are seen as a pest by most - their keen sense of smell and nimble fingers often leading them to ransack food stores and refuse heaps. They are also excellent diggers, and many an ArcWorlde resident has awoken in the night to find a host of Troggles escaping down a hole dug into their (now empty) larders. Troggles are often opportunistic, and follow larger Creatures on raids and hunting excursions. Adventurers in Mildaark must be wary, lest the smell of their cooking fires attract unwanted attention. They may wake to find their provisions, or their party, a considerable amount smaller than when they went to sleep...”
“The individual known as The Explorer is an enigmatic traveller, traversing the countless realms of ArcWorlde in search of knowledge. Accompanied by a sentient Enchanted Journal he found (or met?) on his adventures, he has returned to Upper ArcWorlde after many years across the sea. Although he is not a man who seeks out conflict, his escapades often put him in danger. Many Warbands from across all the Factions have stories of how they saved him from a scrape, or perhaps captured him, though only the Explorer can say for certain if these tales are true.”Other bits I got for the game were the rule book, a set of tarot cards (used for magic spells), some mdf tokens and some resin/plastic (No idea which) Arcanite tokens, used for some scenarios. Using up some resin bases I had knocking about I mounted the Arcanite onto them, just to give them a nicer look when put on the battlefield as an objective. I also discovered if you mix creed camo contrast and talasaar blue, you get a good green-blue mix perfect to give the impression of Arcanite
Next up will be dragons! They are done but I want to post them up as a step by step type thing
The Halflings of New Hewenden (Last one.... for now!!)
New Hewenden is a settlement on the border of Greater Hobbleshire and Scotstaine. The town sends many parties into the Mildaark forest to claim Arcanite. However the region isn’t always safe so the town has a large militia as well as a few employed town guards.
This is the last of the current militia, missing in action
The Halflings of New Hewenden (Continued)
The Thing Flinger, mounted on Buttercup, winner of best in breed in the recent 3 counties country show. Her crew, Gerbut Chub, Fenny Hearder and Ted Fundersnootch are incredibly proud of her, and are deadly on a battlefield
Alura Goodchild (Monster Hunter) She lives outside the town, a bit of a loner. She can take down trolls and juvenile dragons easily. Currently hunting Wotanwðdues, the forest dragonAnd thats all of the second edition halflings painted. Monsters and bits tomorrow
