The Adventures of Berred, Ranger of Shadow Deep

About the Project
A very rough account of our heroes and their adventures in their bold attempts to fight against the forces of darkness. There will be pictures of the action, and a word or two on their deeds for good or for ill. Ok, these are not detailed battle reports but a prose account together with photos taken from each game I play. I’ll attempt to obfuscate the rules and mechanics of the game. This will be open-ended and new entries will be added whenever I play a new game. Also as this project grows my writing gets longer and starts to push the limits of the project system.

Scenario 2: Tor Varden, The Lower Level
After the encounter at the bridge, you and your companions were able to slip past a couple of other gnoll patrols and reach Tor Varden. There were no guards posted outside, and very little indication of anyone inside. Then a muffled scream came from somewhere in the tower. It was a sign both good and ill. There is at least one man alive in Tor Varden, but you might already be too late to save him. You will need to move fast.
It took a little time to get through the door and it made a fair bit of noise but once through the door and into the tower our heroes looked around. Two gnolls with large weapons and evil grins were waiting for them, while a few gnoll archers had their bows trained on the door. The room was an Armoury, the walls lined with racks filled with weapons and armour, tables all about. Berred the Ranger immediately let loose an arrow dropping one of the gnolls carrying a huge sword. The others rushed forward eager to seek revenge for Sir Brian by killing some gnoll.
While Trotter the Tracker easily felled both gnoll archers skulking in the corners, the other three jumped on the gnoll in front of them. It didn’t stand a chance. Searching the room Berred found the logbook written by the Captain of this fallen tower, possibly containing vital information of the actions of the shadow deep. He placed it in his pack to read later. Meanwhile Trotter (the tracker) found a small note in the corner of the room. It appeared to have been scrawled by the Captain before he was killed describing some sort of shadow knight which now controlled the tower.
Quickly the companions made their way to the door and Trysten the Arcanist opened it. Torture implements and skeletons lined the walls, and two wounded, badly beaten up men groaned in their manacles against another wall. A wounded fighter, possibly the last survivor, was fighting with a large gnoll in the room while two more cheered their sergeant on.
Halleck the guardsman and Trysten raced forward to the nearest gnoll. This gnoll dodged to one side avoiding Trysten’s staff and lashed out at Halleck. He went down unconscious. Trotter circled around but couldn’t hit anything with his bow.
The wounded soldier taking advantage of the distraction kicked at the sergeant pushing it back and spinning around dove for a nearby gnoll and killed it.
Berred went to help, attacking the Gnoll sergeant while Trysten and Trotter fought and killed the other gnoll. The sergeant got lucky and Berred went down. Trysten fought and killed the now wounded sergeant. The room was clear but only two of our heroes were still able to fight, along with the wounded soldier now armed with an axe. Trysten noticed that the gnoll sergeant had dropped a small bottle. Upon inspection he smiled and drank the contents. It was a bottle of the finest Golden beer. It certainly wasn’t enough to make him drunk but it softened the hurt of his many wounds. They headed to the next door and opened it.
The next room appeared to be a store room for the tower with, Trotter noted, some stairs leading up. Four gnolls headed their way. Trotter let loose an arrow which embedded itself in a crate and the companions backed away from the door.
The heroes were outnumbered, with Trotter loosing arrows while they all slowly backed away as the gnolls advanced.
A Gnoll went down to one of Trotter's arrows but otherwise his shooting was ineffective. The wounded soldier killed two before he was sadly killed by a third. Trysten was wounded by the same gnoll and collapsed from the wound. It all came down in the end to Trotter and the single gnoll, which Trotter soon dispatched. When searching the last room, with all of the barrels and crates, just to make sure there were no more enemies or survivors, Trotter found some gold near the stairs. Our four heroes quickly patched up the worst of their wounds and made ready to head up the stairs and face the Shadow Knight that they knew would be waiting for them. Sadly the wounded soldier could not be revived, another casualty of the shadow deep. Berred had heard rumours of Gnoll shamans raising fearsome flesh golems but thankfully none were in this tower. They were all weary but they had a job to do.
Scenario 1: The Bridge Guards
Mission 2: The Beacon Tower
Only hours after you arrived back from destroying the nest of spiders, you received a message from your commanding officer. Contact has been lost with the beacon tower of Tor Varden, and it is presumed to have been overrun. You are commanded to round up what men you can and proceed with all swiftness to Tor Varden to ascertain the truth. If the tower has fallen, learn what enemy forces now occupy it and harass or eliminate them as opportunity presents.
Scenario 1: The Bridge Guards
As you make your way towards Tor Varden, the gentle, rolling hills slowly give way to rocky plains, and finally into the boulder-filled maze known locally as ‘the Scree’. It is a barren, unnerving place – a perfect site for an ambush as the large rocks cut lines of sight down to just a few yards in most places. Proceeding cautiously, you eventually hear the Enthel River, which you must cross to reach Tor Varden. As you approach, however, you hear other noises as well, nearly drowned out by the river. Voices, of some inhuman type, a language filled with whines and barks. Climbing to the top of a large boulder, you get a clear view down to the river. There, standing astride the old stone bridge is a pack of gnolls. Judging by the large cooking pot they have set up over the fire, these gnolls are camped here, likely to guard the bridge. The only other place to cross the Enthel River is a ford, in sight of the bridge, otherwise, it will take at least half a day to reach another crossing. There is nothing for it, the gnolls will have to be eliminated, as quickly and quietly as possible.river.
Stealth would be the order of the day so our heroes split into small groups to get closer to the river. Luckily the terrain was rocky so there was plenty of cover. This should be no problem for our Ranger. There was a small moment when Sir Brian our Knight almost triggered a booby trap but Trysten noticed it just in time before it was set off.
A few of the Gnoll guards were on this side of the river, one leaving the others and heading off on his own. Trotter the Tracker leaned out from cover and took a shot, but missed. The Gnoll turned at the sound and was about to let out a yell raising the alarm when Halleck rushed him with his halbert out to silence him fast. He failed and the Gnoll stabbed, then screamed. The sound echoes throughout the area and the chattering of many Gnolls could be heard in response. The alarm had been raised.
On this side of the bridge all hell let loose. Sir Brian charged with Trysten close behind intercepting a Gnoll rushing to save its fellow kin. They quickly dispatched it while Trotter the Tracker dove in and helped Halleck to kill his Gnoll.
Our heroes needed to cross the bridge and fast before too many Gnoll reinforcements arrived for their nearby camp. Another Gnoll archer, already on this side of the river approached. Trysten the Arcanist rushed to take him down while Sir Brian circled around a large rock to lend a hand. Now, with fighting in full view of the bridge it was a matter of time before the other Gnolls were upon our heroes.
This Gnoll wouldn’t die however and Trysten went down. Halleck ran to lend a hand but quickly succumbed to injuries already taken. Sir Brian the heroic knight soon managed to take this hardened Gnoll down.
Sensing their predicament Berred ordered the survivors to take cover and hid themselves as more gnolls rushed over the bridge from their camp. To make matters worse the heavens opened up and the rain came down hard. Both Berred and Trotter sent arrows across the bridge, managing to severely wound one gnoll even with the rain and lower visibility.
The gnolls spotted our heroes and charged. Trotter went down to a blow from a Gnoll’s flail while Sir Brian desperately fought his injured Gnoll. Berred was having a hard time and another blow from that flail sent him to the ground. With his trusty armour Sir Brian fought on. He could see other Gnolls armed with bows positioning themselves close by waiting to get a shot in.
Things didn’t look good. An omen was spotted flying straight for the river in the guise of a giant vulture. A sure sign of death. Sir Brian fought on.
As the dust settled one injured Gnoll staggered away to warn the tower of the attack on the bridge. Many a gnoll had been slain by a group of retched humans.
As the rain cleared a rock was placed on freshly placed soil. Berred the Ranger stood back thinking of his brave friend. He looked over to Trotter, the tracker with his pipe in his mouth, a sad expression on his face. Halleck the guardsman made a groan as he moved stiffly over to where Trysten the arcanist was sitting patching his wounds. They all looked down at the fresh grave of their friend, the brave hero Sir Brian. They still had a job to do and his death would not be in vain. The tower of Tor Varden stood before them. Scenario 2: The Infected Trees
Examining the bodies of the zombies, along with the other clues from the village, left little doubt. The village had been attacked by some horrific species of giant spider, whose venom reanimated the dead. Thankfully, such creatures move slowly. Likely, they will have retreated to the nearest shelter to slowly feast upon the missing villagers. Your duty is clear. Taking just enough time to patch up your wounds, and make a quick pyre for the dead, you set off after the spiders, following their faint, but unique tracks. After nearly a day’s pursuit, the tracks lead into a small forest. Chances are the spiders are not too deep in the woods. You must find them, destroy them and any nests they might have made, and, if you are lucky, rescue any survivors.
With bated breath our brave heroes entered the woods. At least the sun was shining so there’d be fewer spiders. As our brave adventurers delved deeper spiders were indeed spotted and shooting was, for once, on target. Our Ranger was back on point and at home in the woods.
While Berred and Sir Brian split off to investigate a suspicious tree the others continued deeper, with Trotter the tracker keeping track. It was then that the sun was covered by some deep dark clouds plunging the woods into shadows and making shooting much harder, and spiders more excitable.
A shot was missed so our tracker had to get messy and kill the spider the hard way. But all did not go exactly to play, Halleck, the brave guardsman, was bitten and poisoned, before Trotter could dispatch the spider.
In his poisoned state Halleck lagged behind and went to investigate and help a potential survivor who was encased in a web. Turns out the “survivor” hadn’t exactly survived and during the moments of panic our guardsman got himself entangled. Sir Brian heard the commotion and ran in just in time to dispatch the zombie.
With a keen eye Berred discovered something very fine indeed behind that suspicious tree, more gold and jewels, more funds to fight evil. With a job well done it was time to find the others.
Trysten came upon a tree covered in webs, one of the nests where these giant spiders were coming from. With quick thinking he torched the nest, and the tree and a few of the nearby bushes, it’s the only way to be sure.
Alone and certainly not lost in the forest, mistakes were made and Berred became stuck fast in a giant web costing valuable time. It took many attempts to escape, but that stuff was really sticky and wouldn’t let go. Finally after what seemed like hours he managed to cut himself free.
Things were on a roll now, most of the nests had been burned. Just one more to go. Trysten was just about to set light when a spider jumped out and almost bit him. Thankfully Trotter was nearby and distracted the spider while Trysten burned it’s home.
Sir Brian found another web, but carefully using his trusty axe, he cut the web and to his shock He’d found someone who still lived. A knight's job well done. The hero. With parts of the forest burning, our heroes and the lone survivor departed to report to the king. Halleck recovered from his poisoning, the spiders were all dead and our heroes had completed their first mission. The first strike against the Shadow Deep had been won.
Scenario 1: The Deserted Village
From left to right: Trotter the Tracker, Halleck the Guardsman, Berred the Ranger, Trysten the Arcanist, and Sir Brian the Knight.Mission 1: The Missing
It has been less than a week since the destruction of Lorenthia and the appearance of the Shadow Deep but, in that time, the world has seemingly gone mad. Reports of strange creatures, and evil, robed men are flooding in from all along the new border. Even with every soldier, ranger, and volunteer mobilized, the kingdom is stretched thin. Three days ago, a veteran ranger by the name of Aventine went out to investigate reports of an attack on a nearby village. He has not returned. Determined to find the missing ranger, you have gathered what companions you can and set off for the village. It’s an eight-hour hike over difficult terrain.
Scenario 1: The Deserted Village
As soon as you came within sight of the nameless village, you knew that something wasn’t right. There was no sound of man or animal, no movement except for the gentle swaying of the trees in the breeze. Closer in, you could see bodies lying in the dirt and smell the stench of death. Undaunted, you covered your face and carried on. Whatever happened here, it was your duty to try to discover the truth, and, if possible, determine the fate of Aventine. You had just reached the centre of the village, and were about to split up to search, when a horrible moaning sound came from all around.
The party scattered looking for clues before they could get swamped by the approaching dead. Arrows were shot but not very well as nothing was hit, must be the wind.
Sir Brian thought he’d head towards one of the buildings. The door appeared to be locked but fear not, his trusty axe would have it open in a jiffy. He could hear a groaning and was that a squeak? Must be coming from inside. Trotter the Tracker was running past and saw what was about to happen so he went over to help Sir Brian, between them both zombie and giant rat was killed.
Trysten was poking around between some houses keeping a low profile from those horrible zombies and disgusting rats. To his surprise and amazing luck he found a stash of treasure. He proceeded to drag it around with him for the remainder of the day.
Something caught Berred the Ranger’s eye. Were those tracks? It appeared that a possible survivor had run off into the forest. He made a note to follow those when they were done in this village. At the last moment he spotted the approaching zombie and killed it. This Ranger knew what he was doing,…,just not with his bow.
Finally the door was “unlocked” and a frightened survivor waving a wooden sword was found inside. Brian somehow managed to calm him down and convince him that he was here to save him. Sadly a little later on the survivor died in a rescue attempt. He was trying to return the favour as Brian, once again was in trouble and needed saving. Sir Brian did kill the zombie though.
While dragging his treasure Tryten noticed something in one of the houses but the doorway was blocked. He was so focused on “picking the lock” that he didn’t see the danger he was in and had to be rescued by Halleck the Guardsman, who had just been fighting for his life and had to be rescued himself by Berred the Ranger. Once the obstruction was moved aside the body of Aventine the missing ranger was found. He had a very pretty looking sword with him but our “expert” Arcanist decided it was worthless and besides he had his treasure to drag around, so he left the sword.
Time was getting on and more monsters were approaching. With sweat dripping inside his helmet Sir Brian ran towards the river bank thinking he’d found another survivor. Turned out it was a body that looked like it had been bitten, but by what? He didn’t know so he left it and walked away. Sadly just as Trotter the tracker spotted something near a tree he was set upon by a zombie and was badly injured. Luckily the zombie left him for dead and carried on it’s wandering. Once away from the village the party sorted themselves out. Trotter the tracker patched up his injuries with no lasting problems, had a smoke on his pipe and they all looked into Trysten’s chest. It was full of gold and jewels. Much to some disappointment Berred said it was all to go to the war effort against the shadow deep.
Now it was onwards, to follow the tracks into the forest.
