The design
The shire hall in Nottingham had been the seat of law and irdervsince the 14 hundreds housing both courts and gaol. By the 18th century it was clear the building was no longer fit for service with crumbling walls and collapsing floors. In the 1770s young architect James Gandon won the competition to design a new hall. Thus would include two new courts while the gaol remained at its rear. His design here is a typical georgian design using classical architecture for inspiration. They decided not to bother with the statues but the plan to build it went ahead
By the victorian age hangings were taking place on the buildings front steps so a barrier was put up to keep crowds back and this gives us an illustration of the building.
In 1870 a hundred years after it was built someone took a photograph of the building. By then public execution had been abolished. In 1877 the building was expanded after a fire had damaged the courts. Gandons original design remained but the victorians expanded to it and embellished it a little adding fire escapes. My design
The great thing about georgian architecture is it's symmetrical so I only had to design half the building in sketch up and glip the image in the printer to create the two parts.Gallows
Putting it together
I had to design the gallows to fit right. In reality they hook a carpenter 6 hours to build and the noise kept the prisoners awake. One warder was arrested for climbing over the gallows while drunk after trying to return to work after a pub session.
In 1844 12 people died in the crush to see a hanging. During the wait for the hanging people's hats were stolen and tossed across the crowd. Some people were even forced into the air and thrown about like involuntary crows surfing. More police would attend later hangings
Between 10 men were hanged on the steps the last one in 1864 and the biggest gap between them was 16 years as the victorians only really hanged murderers
