Quick urban terrain - A whole new kind of mess.
Note new, but a different way of approaching this than I’ve yet managed.
I hope this proves useful to others as it was a really quick process that I was experimenting with to produce a wee diorama for a scale model. Based on this very striking image from the Chinese revolutionary war.
The product "DAS" is one of those modelling clays that are very cheap and useful for anything that does not require much finesse. It's likely available europe-wide and I'm sure that the US has equivalents.I made simple “pancakes” of thin but varying sizes with it. I waited at least a week for them to as hard as they would.. Then smushed them up with a heavy mortar and pestle. I left them at very varied levels of “smushed-ness” for effect, as a sort of “grit”.
Now, when mixed with water this stuff dissolves again, rather quickly. It is still very textured though so I applied it in the rough shape thatt I wanted. (PVA & water.)
Then I sprinkled a layer of the dry “grit” over the surface and gently pressed it down into the slightly dissolved base layer.
The far ruined brick wall is various waste pieces of foam board crudely sliced into brick-ish shapes and applied on top of each other to form the basis of a thick, very destroyed, load-bearing wall. There are a lot of crude 3mm long foamcore “bricks” mixed in with the terrain too.
The whole process was very quick to achieve too. I’m just trying to give detail on that process!
A quick update to say that I’m shelving this for the time being. I feel the colour scheme “got away from me” a little. Everyone must have thos realisations? I started this model about 18mnth ago and didn’t like what I was doing. Left it alone, then picked it up again…
…..I assume when I come back to it the problems will be obvious…. I still feel like I learned useful shortcuts with it.
