The Silver Bayonet – Egypt Spring Clean

About the Project
I started painting up models for the Egypt expansion of The Silver Bayonet ages ago, but can't find a record of it amongst my projects. I never finished the project and wasn't fully happy with the progress I had made on some of the paint jobs. It seems like a good excuse to record the efforts as a Spring Clean Challenge.

The Janissary
The yellow/ orange was achieved in an odd way. I tried to lighten up the trousers with some white and then use Casandora Yellow shade to tint it. This didn't work, so I added a white and Trollslayer Orange. This had more pigment of course but didn't give me the colour I wanted. I then turned to a thin Tamaya yellow paint that I had, but this didn't give me what I wanted. In the end I used a thin coat of Wraithbone and the Tamaya yellow and felt it was time to end the journey there. I have other yellows that I should have used, so this is a failed recipe that got me to a mediocre result.
The skin was mostly achieved with an Agrax wash over Cadian Fleshtone. This came out too glossy so I did a highlight mix of Cadian Fleshtone and Mornfang Brown to cover the worst of the gloss effect.I looked up the Janissary and recognised the hats and dress of their 17th century uniforms, but don’t recall seeing them in their early 19th century garb. It seems that they abandoned the high, sail like hats from earlier eras for a more manageable turban. The Janissary don’t seem to survive long after the Napoleonic Wars and just become another element of the Ottoman Army. The wearing of the striking uniforms centuries later seems to engender a feeling of Turkish patriotism and pride, harking back to a time when these relatively elite and successful troops were feared and admired.

I went for Athonian Camoshade to taint the faces and exposed skin with a mild green tone. The rest were hit with Agrax Earthshade. Then to make it easier to tell them apart I tried different levels of bandage highlight. One barely dry brushed, one drybrushed more heavily and one with a higher white highlight.
