About the Project

I entered the Travelling Man painting competition. £20 for a random mini, 4 random paints and some basing material. Complete before the end of October. See details below. "IT'S TIME FOR THE AGE OF PAINTTOBER 2025!! In your pack you will receive a random Games Workshop miniature, 4 random paints, some basing materials and sweeties! The competition will run until midnight the 31st of October 2025. In order for your entry to be valid you must submit it into the google form via QR code, as well as post your entry on social media using the hashtags #tmanpaintchallengeand #ageofpainttober - Either on TikTok (@travellingmanminis) or Instagram (@travellingmanuk). At least one of the entry photos should include all the materials from the box to show what colours you had to work with. We would love to see WIPS so please tag us in any! (No extra points sorry!) Paint the miniature using only the 4 paints provided plus your own black and white paints. No other paints are allowed. Mixing the 4 colours and the black and white paints is allowed. You may prime your mini with a black or white of your choice. Mediums are allowed as long as they add no additional colour to the paints. The basing material must be used, however you may add other basing materials as you see fit. Kit bashing is also permitted, as is adding other minis, but the main focus of the miniature must still be the original mini. The main criteria for the competition will be the use of the colours given to create the best looking miniature. There will be 1 overall winner and 3 runner ups, as well as 2 wild cards. The main winner will be the miniature the judges feel has best met the challenge of the limited colour pallet. The first runner-up will be for the best technical painting, with the second runner-up being for the best base. The final runner-up will be for the best executed concept. There will be two wild card winners chosen by our guest judges. Happy Painting!"

The build was simple enough but I have never painted 40K orcs before and never considered painting orcs with no green paint allowed. The build was simple enough but I have never painted 40K orcs before and never considered painting orcs with no green paint allowed.

I started painting the back pack first. It was painted mostly separately from the rest. A few more layers etc. once it was assembled, but it was such a fun looking item that it got some love early on. I started painting the back pack first. The Screaming Pink is a lovely burgundy adjacent colour and seems to compliment the bright Red and orange tip of the rock tops. The Screaming Pink is a lovely burgundy adjacent colour and seems to compliment the bright Red and orange tip of the rock tops.
I tried some OSL hints from the tailend because I knew I wanted to some flames from the back of some kind.I tried some OSL hints from the tailend because I knew I wanted to some flames from the back of some kind.

There was a choice of a sidearm or huge knife to be extra kit items at the hip. I chose the gun and grenade. I painted this separately. With no gunmetal paint to choose from the black and white did a lot of heavy lifting. There was a choice of a sidearm or huge knife to be extra kit items at the hip. I chose the gun and grenade. I think I could have taken the hazard lines on the grenades closer to yellow with some more playing around with ivory and the orange. I chose to keep them orange on the end. The ivory highlights and chipping ended up being effective.I think I could have taken the hazard lines on the grenades closer to yellow with some more playing around with ivory and the orange. I made a sci-fi girder tree from sprue. I hung the left over knife in the tree. Should make for a fun objective token in Stargrave or something.I made a sci-fi girder tree from sprue. I hung the left over knife in the tree. Should make for a fun objective token in Stargrave or something.

I took inspiration from a project on OnTableTop. Using clump foliage as exhaust from the rocket pack. I also saw a lot of people painting busts and interesting skin tones by introducing purple at an early stage.I took inspiration from a project on OnTableTop. The skin was an odd mix of the leather brown, black and white. With a watered down layer of the screaming pink in the recesses the grey looking skin started to look like it was on the green spectrum after all.The skin was an odd mix of the leather brown, black and white. Once I added the clump foliage I realised it was a bit off centre on the base. I didn't find the clump foliage easy to handle. I was reluctant to rip it off and start again. I chose to add a piece as though there had been backfire.Once I added the clump foliage I realised it was a bit off centre on the base. I didn't find the clump foliage easy to handle. I decided that all the equipment on the chest needed another highlight. It would be black and white edges because I would really have wanted a metallic for some of this if I had access to more colour options.I decided that all the equipment on the chest needed another highlight. I had missed that the ring was in his lip somehow. Without a metallic I ended up trying to make it look like a rusty brown in the end.I had missed that the ring was in his lip somehow. Without a metallic I ended up trying to make it look like a rusty brown in the end.
I was happy with it at this point, but the extra back fire piece of foliage idea had only just come to me.I was happy with it at this point, but the extra back fire piece of foliage idea had only just come to me.
I decided to do more on the boots. There was too much plain black on the model. I mixed black and the screaming pink and gave it a pink and red highlight.I decided to do more on the boots. I didn't have access to shades but occasionally I would just water down a brush full of black and use that. It wasn't exactly Nulin Oil but it did push me to highlight and layer areas back up for some increased depth and interest.I didn't have access to shades but occasionally I would just water down a brush full of black and use that. Took this pic from the side because even with a light box it's difficult to see any detail on the lower half of the model.Took this pic from the side because even with a light box it's difficult to see any detail on the lower half of the model.
