About the Project

Ok so I did a thing and purchased a 3D printer from Bambulab during the black Friday sale. As I play a lot of Barons war I wanted a castle... Obviously...then I found a Motte and Bailey ... So that is my plan. And yes it's in 28mm scale.

Well I never realised how long it would take to flock this mound. I started off by adding bushes and grass tufts around the base of the pallisades. Then I added random brushes and grass tufts around the mound. This was all done with UHU as it had far better initial adhesive properties than PVA. Once that was done I mixed up some random flocking options and then used some dark green static grass and went around the mound adding PVA and sprinkling on the flocks. This whole process took around 8 hours to do. Well I never realised how long it would take to flock this mound. I started off by adding bushes and grass tufts around the base of the pallisades. So everything is starting with the same base colours. A mix of three parts brown to one part black.

I also acquired a 2inch brush for this project as I needed something bigger than my largest brush. Both side by side in this picture although I did use the smaller one for the hard to reach placesI also acquired a 2inch brush for this project as I needed something bigger than my largest brush. What I am not worried about too much is the underside of the fighting platform around the pallisade. Because when playing you won’t see it and it’s black from base coat.

The Pallisades

The painted pallisades dry brushed with lighter shades of brown lightened with a neutral gray the final highlight a dry brush of neutral gray. The painted pallisades dry brushed with lighter shades of brown lightened with a neutral gray the final highlight a dry brush of neutral gray.
After some serious dry brushing, some use of some thinned grey speed paints and some strong tone I have reached this stage on the tower. After some serious dry brushing, some use of some thinned grey speed paints and some strong tone I have reached this stage on the tower.

Finally getting going.

So after a long period of bad weather and consideration and other excuses. I have finally got going on painting.

Yes I know I have missed the terrainfest deadlines but well, I want to get this done in a way I am happy with.

So the next stage was to go black. For this project I am using Hobbycraft ready mix paints which are cheap acrylic paints. This is far to big to use anything else. Plus it’s a limited range. So will involve lots of mixing of colours.

Ok so I have got everything printed, apart from some of the palisades.

I have now run into a challenge, I have to take the pieces outside to prime them… Unfortunately the weather has been absolutely awful so I am waiting for some reasonable weather to appear so I can prime Motte and Bailey properly.

Finally got some half decent weather to get the Motte primed I started with zandri dust... That ran out so I had some sand coloured cans... 3 and a half cans later and I think I have it primed. Finally got some half decent weather to get the Motte primed I started with zandri dust... The start of the MotteThe start of the Motte

The Motte and Bailey is a mammoth undertaking it has over 50 items to print.  I started by printing off the Motte and the surrounding pallisade.

So some uhu and a decision to build this in sections. When these have glued, and fingers crossed avoided being trashed by the cat. I will then fill the gaps before joining the sections together . I decided to go all fancy, so I found an STL file for a stone tower and after some manipulation and rescaling I now have a stone tower option...
