Space Knights From Scibor
February 22, 2011 by beerogre
It's that time again when we are treated to another (not in any way inspired by another company) Space Knight release from Scibor.
This time we have the quite pretty Angel Knight and the frankly terrible Celtic Warrior.
Scibor has some quite nice stuff, in particular their fantasy Dwarves have some really strong character. Personally, I don't see why these guys need to churn out derivative works like those above, when they could do something a bit more original, like their fantasy stuff.
I also don't know why they don't try to fill some of the gaps that other companies have in their range, rather than sticking to "Space Knights". Why not some snazzy "Space Elves" or "Space Battlesuits"... here's hoping they come out with something more exciting next time.
What do you think guys?

Ok, the Angel Knight is most def a Dark Angel, and the awfull looking celtic warrior is based on a space puppy.. erm i mean wolf. I can def see the big bad GW lawyers coming in and saying they look to much like space marines, esp Terminators, which they do. Why not go for something more original like if its a knight, base it on a knight’s armour and not big chunky power armour ie maybe in the same style as the Blood Dragon armour from Mass Effect 2????
The gun on the Celtic Warrior looks like something from a pound shop bag of toy soldiers.
I’d be tempted to use one for a special character but as I play mostly at GW stores they’d probably have to stay in the box, plus I agree with @cazboab they could have tried a bit harder on the weapons.
As much as the models look close to a DA and SW, its the paint job that kicks them over that line.
I agree, though, that some miniature companies need to stop ripping off each other and go for original ideas.
I have many models from the fantasy range and a few of the sci fi ( the ogres ) that I am planning to use in an alternative IG army.
These “space marines” do not drag me any attention at all. No new innovative design and no pose or sculpt that really could make a difference on the table mat.
I believe that if they do something that is far away from the sci i design of GW, people will not connect or buy it because is too damn different. O the other hand, when they do something easily recognizable we complain that is not worthy.
I am in favor of new design at least not so close to the GW one but that can be used in my army if I want to do so.
by the way how people react when see a mini from another company in your army? ( not asking in a GW competition, but a friendly one)
I don’t really like the sci-fi minis by Scibor… But I think you’re all forgetting what art means, here.
Scibor is a guy who sells his own sculpts, they’re artfully done and very well molded.
He sells space celts and space angels (or whatever) not because he wants to copy GW or sell more, not necessarily as a parasite… I’ve never met the guy, but I’m 99% sure that his reasoning wasn’t “How can I make money ? Hm… let’s copy GW !”… There’s a hundred better ways to make money by plagiarizing… And a hundred thousand more of making money by other means.
He obviously sculpts what he wants to sculpt. He’s proud of his work and he has every right to be. He sculpts a space knight that way because that’s how he sees that character, because that’s what he sees when he imagines it, when he shapes rough modeling putty, when he touches pen to paper during the “concept art” phase.
It’s not even a question of it being an hommage… It’s a nod to GW’s universe, and it’s a respectful one… Looking at Scibor’s range, it’s a hell of a lot more respectful (and artful) than what Chapterhouse did.
An artist paints a bird not because he wants to improve the design or sell more birds, he paints the bird because he admires the form and wants to express something through it.
Scibor is a guy who just sculpts cool resin guys and happens to mold and sell them because people think they look damn good… So good in fact that they want to own them to compliment the regular GW ones.
It’s more of a work of art, quite obviously, than plastic kits (well designed as they may be in their own right) from a major company. It’s less designed to be played than to look good (even if it looks cool on a gaming table), and it’s perfectly fine because it’s not allowed in official games anyway.
When a sculptor sculpts, a painter paints, an artist (any artist) creates anything, it’s not because he wants to sell stuff or because he needs the glory (though this is just as well if he can achieve that), it’s because an artist needs to create just like he needs to breathe and to eat.
Scibor happens to be inspired by “space knights”. Like many artists, he mold his pieces and casts some copies of them to sell. Derivative ? Perhaps. Still, when you look at his work, you can’t help but see that, derivative as some of it can be, he improved on a whole lot of things and he created just as many, if not more.
Besides, who would dare say that GW’s universe isn’t derivative ?
@elromanozo – That’s my point… Scibor is an artist and has proved with his other range that he has talent and originality.
This type of thing only serves to make him a laughing stock. They’re obviously GW inspired, one of the sculpts is poor, while the other is more expensive than the original miniature it’s trying to emulate.
I’m buying a couple of Scibor’s Fantasy Dwarves today for our D&D game. They’re very competatively priced, characterful and rare enough here in NI that when I bring the out at the LGC people will ask where I got them. As Simon Cowell would say… “they’ve got that star factor”.
The same cannot be said for a number of the “space knights” range… don’t get me wrong… there are a couple of really good peices in there too (the Templars are pretty good).
However, Scibor should concentrate on doing what he does best… and ripping off “Speece Muhreens” ain’t it.

I see your point, and I agree… He does some “alimentary” sculpts as well. But what I saw in the comments prompted this post of mine.
I’m gonna disagree.
I think the Celtic warriors although based on termies etc they are different enough to make them a great source of ‘something cool and different’.
I think so long as he shows respect to the trademarks, ip (ie sculpting everything in house) and copyrights, I for one would be happy to pick one of these up as a cool character for my army.
I don’t think there is such a big deal with compatible stuff so long as you don’t shit on the work of those you have based it on.
Time will tell
