Infinity 3rd Edition Week – New Rules: Close Combat!
October 15, 2014 by dignity
It's time to get up close and personal as we learn about the new close combat rules for Infinity 3rd Edition!
Will you be putting down your guns and getting ready for a close quarters scuffle?

Is it Killian or Cillian? Either way, that’s an awfully smug look for the video front 🙂
It’s Killian rather than Cillian which some people pronounce like Sillian 🙂
I thought it was pronounced Gillian. 😛
That would suggest I spend allot of time shipwrecked on islands…
Or get assigned to investigate weird FBI cases with a kook who believes aliens are real…
Smoooooooth intro mate 😉
Oh man, I don’t know what I was paying attention to, but I just noticed that… @dignity might be the editor and thus responsible but it does look like Killian glitches just a little bit before he gets going. rmmbrygddalkathe-yep! 🙂 I mean, such a small break in an otherwise flawless series of videos, but a bit of a laugh.
Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve glitched while talking nor indeed is it the last lol
Killian, I apologise for this, that was a very poor show on our part.
We will try to fix it and some words will be had in here about this.
Apologies again mate 🙁
I think it’s fair to point out that killian does a spot on job with these Infinity videos; I watch all the infinity stuff and he’s always engaged with the material and does a great job of interpreting complex rules for the laity.
So, there is 0k reason that there should be embarrassment over such a minor pliif; if anything, it lets us know the BoW are human like the rest of us 🙂 – as hard as that is to believe sometimes; I can’t fathom how you guys do all this and still find time for gaming! In any case, no hard feelings, I hope; and if there are, I’m genuinely sorry about that.
…Though it might be slightly hard to feel sorry for an infinity fan who gets to interview Carlos from CB about the new N3 rule set and play infinity with him 😉
Would have to agree with the great job Killian has done on these. Really amping up my anticipation for Infinity 3.
@warzan
lol Its OK Warren, this is more entertaining than embarrassing. We’re all human here, well I have my doubts about Lloyd, he could be a terrain making robot given the speed he makes stuff 🙂
Thirded. It’s great to have Killian on the BoW team, and he’s doing a great job with these Infinity videos. Certainly the clarity he brings to rules discussions is very welcome from my point of view as a newcomer to the game.
Right, all this bromance is making me uncomfortable. ‘Scuse me while I go and insult someone 😉
Love a good CC. Nothing like just getting stuck in.
Great video!
Shinobu Kitsune invites you to get in close…
That girls practically an invisible weed-whacker. That’s what, a -9 to enemy rolls when using level 5 surprise attack?
I’m starting to see why you chose the Jotum to expand the Nomads from O.I. box, great vids
I’m a winner
+++ Close combat seems better than N2.
– – – Invulnerability of TAG? When hapen this?
…Seeing the chart meanwhile they were talkng about it would have been nice….Nevertheless yayy for WULVERS!!!!
Another interesting video
These videos are really ramping up my excitement!
Yeah they are really giving me a good feel for the game, much like Icestorm week.
I might not mind Frenzy that much anymore.
I’m happy to finally get to field my ninjas 🙂
I think my favorite part of the close combat is the one where you add everything above 20 to your dice roll, that is going to make the face to face rolls quite easier even if still is one dice against one dice.
Will understand this more once I read the rules.
Been told my ice storm is on its way.
Great content this week.
Another great rule improvement
Can’t wait to use some get in some awesome cc fights between close combat specialist!
Ninjas VS TAGs – now that´s a movie I´d pay to see!
Nice video! Would have been nice to see the chart scroll so we could take a peak while he was explaining it, just like the other videos this week. 🙂
Nice video, ty!
Killing in close combat is always great Mouuuhaaaa lol
Like the idea of choosing which style of fighting you use each activation. Nice tactical process compared to the usual ‘I hit you, you hit me’ CC in other systems.
Natural born warrior starts to sound a lot more interesting
Martial Arts as a selection of abilities is a bit odd considering how other tiered skills work. I guess it will be easy to remember, and the tactical flexibility of it is superb. I do wish CC had burst values similar to guns, though. You lose a lot of stuff just taking it up to Burst 2.
I’m pretty sure I heard one of the changes is that some CC weapons will have a Burst higher than 1, should add even more options into the mix.
Very enlightening. 🙂
I am at a loss: I have buyed “operation icestorm”, and so I have started a Panoceania army… and now I crunch my nails for I have not start a Jap sectorial! I have to trow myself into military order…
Nice Vid
I like the table to choose from. Can’t wait to get some Daturazi with EXP CC or AP CC weapons on a TAG with Burst 2^^
i really like to see more CC in the game because there are some models that seem more CC oriented but its really hard to get then to melee
Ok, I’m all about the Nomads……. but the way CC is going to work now makes me want to delve into a Japanese Sectorial force
very detailed cc now, will this slow the game down some ? I would think so imo .
Another lesson with Carlos the professor
Don’t suppose we have a copy of that CC table handy do we?
corvus belli not answering to emails.
Sonic – really sympathise with your position, but there is NO WAY that CB are going to read your comment on here. And what are they going to do if they do see the comment? Contact Bruce Campbell?
I assume you have tried [email protected] or even [email protected]?
You’re not, by any chance, in Poland or Lithuania are you?
As much as I feel for you… One more spam post and your account gets deleted.
Ive tried to help him out in one of the previous video comments but either his particular situation is very convoluted or something is up.
Again, you can’t e-mail CB to complain about not getting your copy of Icestorm and expect a replay when its up to your distributor to sort it out as they are who you ordered it through.
Well, looks like CC will be a lot more useful in N3!
I like the evolution of the system from N2 to N3 and really liking how the changes are solving issues from before. I am liking the way N3 is shaping up, looks like it will be a lot of fun. I can’t wait.
I think that will all make more sense once I’ve seen the CC Table, but it definitely sounds interesting.
Will close combat finally be important in Infinity. ASS and Yu Jing are hoping so.
The Rule that many of us was waiting for ! CC now will be more satisfying, better and fun to perform !
okay, now i need some Dāturazi to order for my space monkeys…
I think having to choose between the skills does add yet another dimension/decision to make and makes taking things like the Daturazi from the original combined starter set a bit better now. They look really cool with all the lovely curvy blades, wonder if the stats get a change upwards for the CC?
Finaly the CC skills get more usefull. oniwaban will get some kills epic TAG kills i hope <3
close combat just got more interesting. Let the fun begin!
This is a great approach. You’re not just “more badass” now, you simply have better (and possibly more powerful) options to choose from so you can do what’s best for the situation at hand. It makes sense from a fluff/reasoning standpoint and makes for a more interesting game with better tactical considerations.
Now it gets a little difficult to follow when you have not played jet 😉
This rule set is looking more solid and complete with every video – well done to the team
More please. More N3.
Nice and comprehensive explanation! Thank You!
Very cool changes.
I will need more ninjas 🙂
See Miyamoto Musashi, Snipe Miyamoto Musashi.
Kinematica+Assault… nice rationality on the balance tho! Template weapons and CC will have an interesting interaction for sure! TAGs are already pretty vulnerable to hackers, but I guess its better for balance.
This looks like some fun stuff!
I like it very much.
Hacking got quite a buff, CC got ridiculous powerful – Is this still a game of shooting?
All these changes seem to me like a considerable PanO nerf, cause they suck at everything but shooting, and it’s not that they were considered overly powerful or overpowered (judging by ITS’14 results).
R.I.P my first and favorite faction.
The Überfallkommando and Morlocks says hello!
Yojimbo and my Aragato bikes like this change.
7 mins in and I am falling asleep. Good thing I discovered the game before the video.
Bring on 3rd edition
Doesn´t sound too bad. I always liked that CC was less important but it still seems that CC will not be overly powerful.
First look at close combat…
So far like it all
I wonder how effective my antipodes will be in N3 after all the changes
Love the interaction with the community.
Bring it on, CC is the way to go!
It seems you will get all the bonuses of the same level, I thought you had to choose one…
Can’t wait to try the new CC.
drive me closer, i want to hit them with my monofilament blade.
I wonder what the bonus from berserk is good for… if its a normal roll and you get a bonus on ur dice, does it do anything? increased crit-chance maybe?
Please show us the table !!
Again, these videos just make me eager to get my hands on the rules.
My Anathematics wants to try these new close combat rules.
Even more great coverage of the new Infinity rules. Thanks.
CARLOS RULES!
Loved the intro and think the new rules are going to be great!
Ah, I have several close-combat specialists in my army….. 🙂
Does the chart in the video exist somewhere outside the book, maybe as a download?
Thanks for the videos
Sounds really, really cool.
Glad to see the changes to CC. I play all of the brawlers…
My PanO knights love handy stabby charts.
Maybe close combat will become a little more relevant.
I am looking forward to more close combat in in the game.
CC sounds like it will be alot better.
Anything that makes you want to put ninjas on the table is a good thing.
More awesome changes (or should that be more reasons the suspense for N3 is killing me?). Hmmm… that MA4 bonus is great for the MF weapons of Oniwaban and Shinobu which were really touch and go before.
Also I know I don’t have the full picture here but I can’t help but wonder whether camo CC troops will really be much good against TAGs with flamethrowers. It sounded like the target gets to use its flamethrower now even if it was surprise attack so they will just get cooked. I suppose you could choose to dodge on the charge though, and then CC attack them next order when they are already locked in CC so cannot shoot…
This is a really fascinating way to go with close combat. Maybe I’ll break out my JSA a little more often.
Really looking forward to your gameplay video where it (hopefully) all falls together. By now, as a non-regular Infinity player, I feel a bit lost with all those puzzle pieces.
aww yeah it seems like going Stabitha Christie on some Aleph scum will be a fun time to be had by all…except the Aleph dude that is…
Want minis!
Glad CC gets a boost
The Steel Phalanx invites you to a close up and personal look at their modus operandi. This is gonna be fun 😉
I don’t want to derail this but I would really like to see the same level of video’s put out for 7th Edition 40k. A week long set of core 40K rules etc with tables and how you guys play, any house rules you run with Warren like your poker chip idea etc.
Nice vid hope this makes cc better
PanO Knights will be more fun now.
Im exited to try this game out.
Hope close combat will finaly be better balanced… It was a pain !
These changes sound great. I like that now everything is in charts. Makes it a lot easier to find what you need.
Look out TAG, here come mah fist
The new CC Chart is great. Was hoping that Natural Born Warrior would be more fun tho.
That does make melee look more interesting, even if that chart makes my brain hurt but thats probably just that I haven’t played more than a couple of intro games of 2nd ed
This is something I like. Man comes at me with sword, my response is to shoot him with the futuristic gun I’m holding, rather than reach for a knife|sword|chainsaw
Damn you Beasts of War and Corvus Belli … I am getting closer and closer to spending money on this!!!
I don’t know how these rule changes will play in game if it will be an improvement or not. For example on paper I like that bonus doesn’t stack as it opens to tactical choices and that to me sounds more like a pro than a con. The same for the new mechanics around CS above 20, it’s more simple and clear, or changes like the MOD to enemy BS or CS, but I dunno by now if I will miss the current mechanic of N2 or not. All bonus and malus considered I fairly suppose we will begin to fear Ninja and Galwegian like the plague!
Overall it’s a good thing that they honed the game mechanics to streamline the rules and offer a neat and smooth gaming experience. The more we see of Infinity Week on BoW the more we want to know, heck it’s about ages to the middle of december … *_*
I like the versatility offered by this, and it even further increases the interaction during the game when two specialists meet.
Be careful not to sand your elbows on that table lads!
I’m glad close combat is looking to be more fun. I didn’t really feel it was lacking from the game, but it’s still a better evolution of it I think.
can’t wait to test this
great week really enjoying the videos 🙂
Not a ton of new information in this one, but I’m still really excited to see certain units really make CC worth it in N3.
i guess that the assault skill will make it easier to actually reach CC
Once again, the same as in the GenCon.
Great video
Charts are definitely the way forward. They’re so much easier to understand and should save time.
My knights like it.
This all makes it very easy to understand the game, I can allmost promise I get handfull of people playing Infinity N3.
Nice
Good to see cc get a boost but still stay second best to shooting in most situations.
All this stuff about martial arts is getting me excited. Can’t wait to use an Oniwaban or Shinobi Kitsune
MacMurrough always in top…. 😉
Corregidor propagandas
Fantastic changes, so into my Infinity right now and my Operation Icestorm just arrived a few minutes ago ;0))
Awesome, a Kung fu menu! I’d like a bowl of crane style for starter followed by a medium rare snake style, finished off with a helping of drunken style! wHu Paah!
I’m really excited to see how this affects the Pan-o knighthoods, honestly. I hear the Fatherknight is already a scary fella…
Interesting stuff, although the question as always is how to actually get into CC without burning up the order pool.
Very nice.
Very cool vids.
great stuff, cant wait for the new book, and that sweet ltd bounty hunter
Melee specialists are going to be even more terrifing now.
can’t wait to have my first game one Fusilier painted 14 more minis to go
Give me that Jotum!
Nice video again guys.
interesting
I hope old unit profiles will get updeated to suit new martial arts rules.
Infinity weeks are easily my favourite weeks on here Killian is a great addition to an already awesome team of hobbyist’s and gamers and I have to say I am slightly jealous of you all getting to play on awesome tables and getting cool sneak peeks from Carlos himself I bet he gives away so much more off camera the guy is just so excited its like watching a kid at Christmas sometimes.
Can’t wait to try the new rules!
Having never played the game, CC seems like something that only the troops that are specialized for it has any chance of being effective. I really like that, actually feels realistic and modern.
Holy crap, now Shinobu Kitsune will be forcing the opponent to shoot at -12 the turn she runs in
I like the changes and how it will force players to be very cautious of CC ambushes or hidden ninjas.
The new CC Rules seem pretty straight forward now… NICE!
Break out the katanas
Glad to see some complexity to the CC. And glad to see this isn’t a game where you just charge and get stuck in melee.
So long to wait 🙁
Some nice changes, are they going to revamp the old stats in line with the newer ones too I wonder?
The martial arts skills sound awesome and fun! Can’t wait to try something like that with ninjas.
I’ll be happy if close combat is worth doing, as it is I’d ofter rather just shoot.
Brutal!
Awesome! Keep them coming!
I’m having a hard time keeping up, guys! Just too much content, and I want to watch it before the Weekender comes out… must- fit- in- my schedule. Which comes the weekend, other things have to fit AROUND my Weekender viewing. Yeah, really like the show and there’s nothing like it!
Oh, Domaru Butai for the win!
More reason to kill Aleph from a distance now. I see myself taking a lot of EM grenades.
This rule about picking which rule you want to follow seems great since you don’t have to worry as much about understanding how all the different levels would stack.
Oh man. As a Steel Phalanx player, cannot say enough how good CC looks compared to before, there is always a what if / I want X etc, but shotguns and close combat right now looks like actual tactics, not a guaranteed end of game after turn 1.
Can’t wait to get my hands on the new edition.
Good God, imagine if all those skills did stack… Level 5 martial artist with a +3 mod, giving -9 to enemies, +3 damage, hitting anyone in contact with two attacks… Ultimate devastation!
Oh man! Husein al-Djabel which MA will you choose to slice and dice those poor enemies now.
So…Achilles B2 DMG 16 EXP xD xD and ODD….
Wow, Assault seems like it could be awesome on something that’s pretty durable.
These rules are making much more sense than v2!
Hmm, never been a fan of CC being effective in shooting games.
I really like the new assault rule. Games are going to be dynamic.
I like the “choose one”. makes it more tactical when 2 specialists meet eachother.
Choosing fight styles, hmm nice!
Lots of big sharp swords!
Nice!!!
iam looking forward to the charts of martial arts my hassasin fiday needs more cc training 😉
Up close and personal baby. I love it!
Excellent work on this video!
Love the flexibility of these new martial arts levels, and that combat has been beefed up a bit.
I think I will have to use Carlos’s phrase “Here I have another chart” when I try and explain to my friends how things will work 🙂
The table overviews are a very good idea. That will make playing the game so much easier.
The more I see and hear about 3rd ed the more I am liking the game.
I’m glad they didn’t go over the top with this. More tactically interesting CC, but not much more powerful. Guns still rule.
Another great video by the BoW team. Loving Infinity week. Keep up the excellent work!
it’s always nice to beat your bare hands
Yeah, I still feel like shooting is more satisfying, but this opens up a lot of options for rodeo’ing a TAG, Titanfall style.
Seems like getting into close combat is actually going to be worth while in 3rd. At least at times. It was rarely worth doing so in 2nd from what I hear.
Enjoy to be able to close combat with pano knights !
I’ve just introduced one friend to Caledonian Ariadna and another to Steel Phalanx Aleph. I now get to see how my prized Iguana dies – Highlander-style from a tartan-clad maniac, or bisected by a mythological demigod maniac.
Go Ninja, Go Ninja Go! (^_^)
Like these changes. Little more clear as to how it roles and make cc better option.
More reason to use the Uberfallkommandos.
interesting, i did find the O:I booklet to be a bit lacking in the CC department
I think I’ll stick to shooting
Hopefully the revisions to MA provide actual variety to models that specialize in CC.
Why bring a knife to a gun fight?
Have only been in the table top hobby for a month now, practising my painting and and assembling on ‘hand me downs’ and I felt I was finally ready to take the plunge into one wargame that gave me multiple play style options. I must say. Infinity has done that for me :’)
Great work CB, for such a fabulously narrative, cinematic game I always felt close combat could have used a bit more flavour – Done and Done. Nice. I love the tactical aspect of choosing different levels too, great improvement.
Oh, but they should totally rename the different MA levels after moves/ styles.
imagine the out of sync lips fun we could have….
“hmm, your stooping crane style is no match for my itchy monkey” etc
Haha that was my first thought too! We’ll just have to create our own faction specific martial arts 🙂
And can I just join the chorus.
Ninjas, yay!
At last they might be as cool as they look.
My ninjas are ready!
I really hope all of the reference charts that Carlos is using are ultimately made available in something like a quick reference PDF.
My Scots and Knights look forward to this!
Really good stuff!
I can’t wait for N3!
As a JSA player, these new rules make me pretty happy.
Just learned about N3 and picked up Icestorm today. Now I’m working my way through the videos… and hoping I win the boxes to fill out my forces!
If there was a game mechanic like the x-wing dial system for close combat, that would make the surprise of close combat more realistic.
Can’t wait for my Daturazi to get stuck into these new close combat rules.
Super informative, great job by Killian and Carlos. Cheers guys.
love the changes…still waiting for Hacking rules
I really LOVE the sentence that Carlos is using relative to third edition. Crystal Clear: good sign of what is the intention of the new edition
Great to see CC get a boost to make it more of a viable option. Those big swords pano have got need to be good for something!
Interesting!
Oh yeah military orders are going be animals.
nice touch ^^
now CC is more vivid … but when the guy whit the sword meet (at distance) the guy whit the gun …. the guy whit the sword … die.,..
I like how the different levels of martial artist do different things (and not just the same thing but better. (At least that’s how I understood it, I don’t really know the rules.)
The Old Man in the Mountain is watching you.
wow wow wow!!!
Interesting, this opens a lot of new options
Good! Now we can fight as warriors! Hand to hand! It is the basis of all combat!
