Infinity 3rd Edition Week – New Rules: Templates
October 14, 2014 by crew
Let's take a look at the next of the big changes to the rules for Infinity 3rd Edition! Our buddy Carlos talks us through how the rules for Template Weapons have changed and how it's going to effect your games in the future!
What do you think of the changes?

hell yeah first to post … later for some contents after the video ;P
this is really interesting and seems SOLID!
I really love that the templates have a slight negative effect on grouped troops, the first guy can dodge but the guy behind gets a face-full 🙂
I like that all these rules work the same with all the templates of the same type – this will make it faster and allow for cross familiarity – if I know how my YuJing shotgun template works, I know how your Ariadna Missile template works – I like it a lot.
Also – That was an epic room clearing demo!
I really like the way DTW work now.
I call for a reroll !!! great stuff guys.
…Kind of not very logical…But definitely more standardised for everyone
Are the templates horizontal AND vertical – or both?
They are treated as both. Essentially imagine the template fills the whole area that would be encompassed if you spun them along their axis.
or one or the other I meant
The new Template stuff will work great for sure and Love the Boarding Shotgun <3
Loving this week, thank you so much 🙂
Bring on the HFTs!!!
OK,
Shotguns have gotten a lot more interesting. My one concern however, is that speed of play might be slowed down a bit when people have to swap in silhouette templates to figure out where they can place the origin of the template. It could get a little dodgy if you’re eyeballing it just using the model. I’ll be curious to read the entire text to fully understand how this actually works.
Ok, now I can comment. WELL, it’s kind of an interesting turn to standardize template so much, but it seems helpful as like that, it avoids much of the confusion and streamline interactions among models. So in order to have neat rules it’s welcome! All in all it’s not so illogical as it seems firsthand sometimes we just need to make acquaintance to the new standard and be gone with ye old ways of dealing in situations like these in N2. So as it help to enjoy gaming, hail N3 rules’ simplifications!
I want to stress also that if as it appears to be, in N3 core rulebook will be many more graphics example to help how to figure out gaming situations from the easy ones to borderlines, that’s it’s all for the best of the game.
Finally as a funny side note, malicious Interventor Morgana take revenge in the video game example for all that Nomads butchering under Daturazi templates in the graphics by killing like a pro some unwitty Panocs. Arachne rejoice!
This rule set is getting better and better
Great to finally see some more infos on N3. I’m excited.
This will make everything much easier to get to grips with the system
God, now I know where those 275 pages of rules are coming from, terminal templates got all the complexness extracted from every other rule.
silhouette uses are interesting. think it will only be used when something is ambigues and you just have to be sure. Most of the situations you will figure it out without the silhouette. A lot is clearified a lot. im affraid template weapons like flames and chainrifle will become obsolete because you can get out save fairly easy dodge roll + arm roll. While you can shoot another weapon with an higher burst and more change to hit etc. only cheap troops might want to keep them. Will see how things work out. I’m happy they clarified a lot of the rules.
I cannot find those silhouette on Wararsenal, am I blind? 🙂
they were pulled, and are now waiting to be released. Maybe next week if Carlos is revealing them and using them this week.
They were on their website for one day, but they pulled the listing and refunded all the orders because CB didn’t want them to sell templates until N3 was fully released.
by ‘templates’ I of course mean silhouette templates
This is sounding better and better!
Very good, great week guys
Curioser and curioser, loving all these new changes.
I shall have to see how these rules work out on the table. I like the explanation.
Looking awesome. I am really glad they are adding so many graphic examples, and including more complex situations. I am beginning to understand why the rules are 280+ pages.
Would be nice if these things could be explained with game play examples.
Oops, I should have watched all the way through
It took a bit of templating to understand the concept, but I must say that the new rules seems like a blast!
bad puns… we’re getting in true b.o.w spirit ! 😀
Looking great so far!
straight forward once you get your head around it
I’ve just put my Nomads from the starter together, Send me more. 🙂
Pie plates of death.
Certainly clears up many an issue
I love the explanatory images. That is going to make 3rd edition much clearer!!
This is looking great!
Interesting.. the rules seem to have been adjusted so that the way template and direct tempates work makes more sense.. except for grenades which is kind of sucky. It doesnt make any sense that if you targetted one guy with a greande but two others would fall under the template, a successful dodge from one guy negates the hit on the other two. It makes more sense if they got their own dodge rolls, with the PH penalty if they didn’t have LoS to attacker.
As for the overall changes, I feel sorry for impetuous troops with Chain Rifles now, or models with flame throwers as a defence against melee troops!
I just posted something long about the grenade issue, I should have read all the comments first. I picked up on this too and it does seem strange that CB goes trough all the trouble of making these nice, streamlined template rules and then create an exception with grenades.
can.t wait to get my hand on the 3rd Edition Rule book and play that version
Thanks guy’s
Damn, shotguns just got nasty!
I was glad to see there were differences between a flamer and a rocket launcher. Wouldn’t make sense that models outside LoS would be unaffected for the rocket.
So apparently in N3 the tactic “apply shotgun to face” seems quite legit. And also, those PanO must have been caught completely off guard 😛
Certainly making me want to try the game out
Nice. I like the new rules.
I may not be a current player but I can recognise a ruleset getting tighter when I see it. Admirable objectives for a new version.
I am very keen on the new template rules and ways of expanding and diversifying weapons and weapon types, but I think to get the full impact of something like this, we’ll need to see how other rules and profiles are affected.
Will be hugging those buildings and watching for blast focus to save my Tohaa then 😀
This all seems to make sense. Doesn’t seem to hard to understand or learn
December is too far.
Another great vid guy’s thank you, this week is so cool. give us more please 🙂
Muahaha! This pleases Achilles!
I love that shotgun blast rule!
Seems 3rd edition is sound improvement. Looking good to go
It’s very a good idea to have make plenty of illustrations to understand/remember how the whole things works (for the weapon’s range too)
This is great. By allowing me to place a template at any part of my silhouette it will be easier to lean over the top of a wall and light some fools up.
awesome! love the new changes!
I like the new shotgun rule.
Lol at those dice rolls.
Template rules seem very tight, the illustrations will be really useful for dealing with the usual argumentative git
Love the new rules so far. thanks!
If a shotgun can line up two models, it is equal to or better than a spitfire or HMG in that situation. Especially at very close range.
Really loving what I see! templates will work really well for certain situations of contention lol. Keep up the great work!
I’m a winner
Cool video.
Love the demo, would like that for every rules video!
Very good, sound to be a great week of info
Another awesome video.
Interesting.
Templates resolved – cool
sounds like a logical way of handling things…
LOS and templates make more sense and are a lot clearer. I’m excited to see where this is going.
Loving the vidoes, great explanations of some intricate rules.
CLARITY IS MINE!!
Very well explained Carlos.
After I had seen the game situation this came to my mind:
Consider an order of an attacker, which first skill is to move within the zone of control of an enemy. The enemy has no line of sight to him, because the attacker is in his backarc. The enemy declares to turn as an ARO. Now the attacker will declare a direct template shot.
The question is, can the enemy change his ARO into dodge or can he even do both?
I think the “You can dodge whenever a template weapon hits you”-rule as it is now will produce some timing issues similar to the situation above. But Im quite confident that the actual rule will describe very clearly what to do in such a situation.
An interesting rule, but logical.
Good to know that you go the simpel and strait way, looking really forward to this.
Even if I’m a littel disappointed that there will be no german rulebook in the december release…
Awesome.
Looks good!
I really like the changes in DTW! I was skeptical of the straight PH roll countering them but I see the logic of it. I really like the way you can place a template how you want from different points of the model. That makes so much sense. CB really thought thru this.
Hehehe, don’t you dare mess with the IT guy!
I like that it all work the same way. The main thing to learn is which weapons generate Direct Templates and which generate a Terminal Templat, since they seem to work very differently with the ARO’s. Should be no problem once you get a few N3 games under your belt.
The only confusing thing for me was Carlos quick description of the Smoke Grenade at 17 minutes in, where it seems that Grenades have a third way of working. He says it provokes a face to face roll, just like a Terminal template BUT he also says that if the ARO is successful against the granade, the template is canceled. This was not the case with other Terminal Templates like the Boarding Shotgun used in the example. It remained regardless of ARO success or fail. If Carlos example with the Smoke Grenade is correct it seems slightly broken as the grenade would have a bigger risk to fail the more units you managed to get within the Template as you would get more ARO’s that could cancel out the effect entirely if successful.
Perhaps we can get a clarification?
Oh yeah that is weird. I missed that the first time through so cheers for pointing it out. I thought that from a consistency and logical POV that if the smoke grenade was placed over enemy guys they would all get to respond as its a blast even if they had no LOF (hence it being brought up) but if they dodged it they would just be dodging out of its radius etc not voiding the template being placed.
I’m hoping that was just a rushed and mistaken explanation because voiding the template being placed goes against the rules consistency AND common sense :/
Ditto for clarification – all the silhouette and direct vs terminal made sense, but grenades??
Shotguns just got a lot nastier.
what a kind of party are they having there, that missed all??
Another good solid rule for the new edition, I’m liking the way this is shaping up
seems great changes so far !
I dont know about this changes, i think they should have keep the difficulty for dodge a template
Hahahah those epic rolls!
This, along with the +6, really makes shotguns shine, my Haqq light shotguns may get some use now 🙂
Another get video
So I need to figure out a way to make December get here sooner! Must. Play. N. 3.
Great, great stuff. Shooting the tempates from any spot on the silhouette is awesome, very cinematic, makes you imagine the trooper altering his stance all the time to get the best possible angle.
Aro’s on templates is a funky twist!
Sorry mate I pressed the down thumb by mistake. Actually I agree.
I dont really get it frankly but I guess we have to consider the whole picture of the new rules… Why if the fusilier hits the guy he also dodges is beyond me really, at this point only figures that don’t have line of sight would dodge right? Who else would?
Looking forward to this edition with it’s easier to follow rules. I’m hoping to get my gaming group to play infinity as the miniatures are awesome and I love it’s reactive actions which makes the game way more interesting to play.
Certainly appears to make it simpler to understand and for me it is more logical the template still gets its effects on other models behind if the guy at the front, the original target in the example , does successfully dodge as the “blast” happens whether he dodges or not. Agree with some other comments that the point of origin or blast focus could potentially lead to having to use the silhouette template too much, but probably more so in tournaments than home based or just playing with your mates.
Fantastic to see that they’re making an effort to try and explain all the weirdest, most unlikely situations. Will stop many an argument I’m sure.
definitely a good idea on how template hits can be negated
for what I see so far …I think the game become more long for the weight of all dice trow ….
we will try ^__^
at the end PanO demostrate their really skill^^,… die die die PanO
I need to buy some templates!
Where was the dice God for Carlos? Lol.
Well all those diagrams explain the size of the rulebook…and I love it. Fantastic that they tried to cover so many possible and confusing situations.
Also loving the rule changes. Definitely all changes for the better. My initial reaction to the shotgun template being placed even if the firer failed a face-to-face shooting against the initial target was that it seemed somewhat illogical as I always interpreted that situation as meaning the initial target reacting quicker and shooting first. But I can still easily see it making sense as the initial target just reacting more quickly to avoid the shot before (or while) shooting. And I think this slight change in conception is definitely worth the pros of the change. In particularly it allows the rules to be the same no matter how the initial target responds. For instance if they dodge it makes no sense for the template to not still be placed.
righteous
I have a question in that last example if the 2nd guy passed his BS roll and got higher than 2 does he hit the shooter and the other 2 still have to make their Armour rolls?
Yup. They all independently compare there (face-to-face) rolls with the Interventer’s rolls. So he will win his face-to-face => he cancels interventer’s hit against him and inflicts a hit against the interventer. The other 2 still failed their face-to-face rolls against interventer though, so they still take a hit 🙂 That help?
Sounds pretty good. I like the idea of using the silhouette templates with the blast focus so it’s not fixed. Gives a nice cinematic feel of the models shooting their guns at different positions.
I really like how Corvus Belli is taking steps to make things more solid for tournament play.
The new template rules, while simplified, I feel add a more realistic feel to the combat as well. Super stoked for third Ed!
Interesting, seems straight forward.
Great examples! Thanks Carlos!
I love how much thought went into the new edition
Much better to explain rules by actually have them played out. Great effort, guys!
In my opinion, templates are a lot easier to utilize now thanks to the streamlining of the mechanics. The new images help a lot as well as they seem to be a lot more easier to comprehend then the 2nd edition version.
This video provided some awesome clarity and some nice gameplay examples
I seems like the Corvus Belli guys have spent a lot of time reworking the rules to make them clearer and more standardised and I’d say they have succeeded.
Torn; at first glance it looks like template weapons will be very strong, but I’m definitely in favor of simple and easy to use rules.
great stuff, cant wait for the new book, and that sweet ltd bounty hunter
So far like it all
Although i loved to fire around with my GML i really like the option to dodge unseen template attacks since this always led to a lot of frustration. And i love the new Boarding Shotgun, i have to fit a few of these babys into my armoury.
i really like the new templates rules. Actually they are totally OP, and very very cheap.
the new corebook seems it will be much much clear than n2 with that amount of graphics!!! 400 pages in two books? now we know why!!!
Fireteams, and other clumped up units, are going to be more vulnerable now, but at the same time have a better chance for dodging/surviving. Interesting 🙂
Nice video.
I imagine I’ll have to re-learn a lot of aspects of the game, as the new rules have a vastly different approach to tackling some situations, even though the basic mechanisms remain the same. Quite interesting.
I really like the idea of dodging a template, can’t wait for the battle report
Can’t wait to break out the boarding shotguns!
I want to see/know more 😉
I like the streamlining of the rules for templates and that they all work the same way. That will reduce the number of iffy situations.
And that was one helluva room clearing by Carlos 😀
This new method is good: it eliminates the controversy and pines down the power of template weapon without transform them in useless weapon. “Me gusta”!
No good hiding round the corner then!!
Template rules look solid 🙂
My copy of Operation Icestrom is not even in my store in Poland. I ordered my copy of O: IS July 29th. Back then CB promised to send a starter around mid September. We have mid October, I wrote two e-mails to the CB what’s going on. No replies. I understand it. Central Europe is no market for CB, USA is. Fully complete one pre-ordebefore you start the second one. Still no response to my e-mails from Corvus Belli.
I can imagine using shotguns more often now. Which is nice.
Oh, I think I’m gonna need more shotguns 🙂
The coverage that Beastsofwar gives to the slightly smaller miniature/gaming companies is fantastic, MicroArts, Mercs, Infinity etc. Keep up the good work !!
Really like the way Silhouette tokens are being used for stuff like this.
Jeeves! Bring me my shotgun. The Nomads are on the lawn again.
my haqqislam are going to love these changes
Seems confusing, but with pictures and text I’m sure it will be explained well.
Doesn’t sound all that complicated and adds a nice new depth to combat. Can’t wait for N3 to be released!
The use of the blast focus for determining whether a model is hit by a template makes complete sense. I really like that addition to the rule set.
Considering template hits in two axis is interesting, it really makes you think about combat in three dimensions.
Hooray for shotguns.
I’m eager to play 3rd…
Cool, I thinks now is better rule than N2.
Big mess in Corvus belli. I suggest to think about pre-order N3. Mr. Carlos is lying about Operation Icestorm. He knows that his company is not finish sending the starter. No response to emails from customers.
Now i defintely need more shotguns.
These template examples will be extremely helpful in 3rd edition.
Great video, as always. This said, I think we need more info on direct templates and grenades. The show has open even more questions than it answered (which is a good thing, mind you)…
Shotguns, shotguns, shotguns, need more shotguns!!
Your Infinity Week a few years ago is what got me into the game.
Infinity week this year is helping to get my gaming group into Infinity (along with Operation: Icestorm).
so boarding shot guns just got deadlier 🙂
Shotguns always laying down a template is an excellent change. With the new shotgun range values, I think we’ll definitely be seeing closer proximity between models too, which should help with getting people into CC. Good stuff all around.
This is just awesome
Funny how these new templates work.
Well, as for a newbie templates look rather complicated :/
Enjoing the week
Really interesting great show… really want to set something on fire now. In the game obviously,
All these clarifications are making a lot of sense, can’t wait to get my hands on the book
Templates – interesting take on the two style of templates.
…soooo…as someone who has not played jet…THIS ist the less complicated version..WOW 🙂
Great Rules
Looking Great
Sweet news.
Lots of rules and interactions, but they’re really showing a strong attempt to making them clear and easy to understand. So far they seem to be reaching that goal.
Thank goodness for lots of visuals, (hopefully soon with supporting text), because Man the possibilities are endless!
The shotgun example in particular continues to have the weird “shooting ARO cancels opponents attack” rule that seems so odd and counter-intuitive to me. I still feel like the rules ought to incorporate the idea that shooting back doesn’t cancel the attack or any hits made, it just gives you a chance to make hits in response.
The previous attempts to explain it were usually that you got a shot off first or otherwise caused the enemy to not hit you by making your own attack, but in a case like this you have several people being hit by a shotgun blast, but since you shot the attacker you’re somehow immune to it, even as it hits other people? It just defies logic.
Not to mention that it makes things clearer with an ARO attack being used to take an offensive response while dodge is a defensive response. At present it’s almost always clear whether to attack or dodge based on the situation and weapon used. Moving to this sort of system would make for far better tactical choices and would give the PH stat even more importance rather than letting you use your BS for defense.
Some interesting changes in 3rd edition.
Is it wrong that taking 20+ minutes to explain how templates work seems overly complicated to me?
I like the direction they took with the changes
Lots of changes here!!
I like this and am impressed with the more solid and understandable rules
Love the attention to explaining the rules.
I really like how cinematic are this new rules, the way you imagine the morat kneeling before the enemy to try to have a better shot…. it is incredible, really loving the rules!!!
The guys from CB did it again! I love these catch all situations rules, where you don’t have to memorize a rule for every situation effectively creating more exceptions than rules.
I’ve always relied on the kindness of others in using their templates, since I was without….
These new rules bring everything to the fore….. I’ll have to get my own…..
aye 200 pages of charts & images 80 pages of written rules — I kid I’m glad to see CB striving to make their system unarguable Of course there will always be hedge cases but it IS a wonderful goal
Whoa. Camo shotguns ftw.
Very, cool.
Yeah… this will definitely change te way people will think about template weapons. Shotguns are a lot more useful, but direct templates much less so. Sounds like Aleph just got a boost they didn’t really need, as they now can dodge all fire that’s trying to take out their ODD, etc., while a lot of Ariadna troops may feel a little nerfed.
I’m not sure how this will go in my games it certainly make chain rifles and Boarding Shotgun pretty scary
Looking good for N3
What about grenades ?? please fix grenaaaades
That seems simple
such a great game am enjoying this week immensely 🙂
I concur…
Nice summary of those new rules.
I was just wondering how the changes would affect my shotguns and there you have the explanation. 🙂 Great video guys. The gameplay example is an especially good addition.
I can still see a lot of ‘trick shots’ happening, trying to get that perfect angle to cause the most damage possible.
Finally I feel like the shotgun tax is becoming the shotgun rebate!
Great stuff
Looks like we’re all gonna be drowning in tables, tokens and templates in N3, lol.
Nice and clear graphics, I like the way dodging is easier but no cover makes saves harder. Good rebalance move.
Template weapons are still going to rock in version 3 🙂
Fantastic changes, so into my Infinity right now and my Operation Icestorm just arrived a few minutes ago ;0))
I’ve got to show my buddy this. He had a titanic rage quit some months back and sold off all his infinity stuff all because he couldn’t (refused to) get his head around the cover / LoS mechanics in 2ed.
These are fantastic changes. Very smart use of templates. A few too many times, in other games, templates get a free ticket to murder everything regardless of LoS
I’m liking the new clarity in N3.
Interesting change, though a second take/rerolls on the example would have helped.
Give me that Jotum!
Interesting, look forward to reading all about it in the new rules.
More solid rules, love it. Now my haqqislamits with shotguns will rock.
I really like their emphasis on making the rules simpler
Trickiest rule exp so far, but should help to clear up how templates are used.
Template rules weren’t too compliceted, in my opinion. Will see how the new ones turn out ingame.
I wish shotguns used templates in 40k… 🙁
I’m glad to see the end in-game examples as I admit I was a little confused before hand~
I love the shotguns in this game
I like the tightness of the new template rules.
ZOMG, Boarding shotguns FTW.
Pretty sweet. Good excuse to get a new set of templates…for my wife, of course…
I hope all the rules have images like these, it makes things so much easier to learn and teach the rules.
It seems they took a lot of effort to make the new edition clearer and easier to understand.
Silhouette look handy, hoping it won’t be difficult to use
oh damn my Naffatun Flamer can be evaded with a normal PH Roll or Ph-3 ? I think i need a change of plan 😉 Just kidding i think its a very good idea to change the templates like this.
So much clearer now. Really digging the use of all the illustrations!
This really looks like it makes sense, and it’s good they’ve gone to the trouble to include so many illustrations of various scenarios in the book.
Sounds like flamers and the like took a bit of a de-buff, but shotguns are definitely better.
Another great video by the BoW team. Loving Infinity week. Keep up the excellent work!
you can not hide from my shotgun
Wow, shotguns just got that much stronger. And I really love how this cleans up phantom ARO’s.
So am I right in thinking all temptlates ignore cover or have I misinterpreted that and missed something?
Heavy flamers rules !
Well, Dogfaces are now a nightmare for any group of troops in cover – jumps over the nearest container and HELLO!
Interesting change to the template rules not sure if I like them yet or not need to play test.
Nice rules, can’t wait to start playing N3! (^_^)
Luckily I’ve recently found a local shop to get some templates.
No complaints with these changes in the rules. I like the distinction amongst the heights of models & templates (friendly models ducking out of the way/etc).
Love me some boarding shotguns.
So the rules have been changed to reflect reality. Buildings stop blasts, people don’t. Makes sense.
Have only been in the table top hobby for a month now, practising my painting and and assembling on ‘hand me downs’ and I felt I was finally ready to take the plunge into one wargame that gave me multiple play style options. I must say. Infinity has done that for me :’)
Seems really clear now.
So much more accessible now.
Great stuff here.
I can’t wait for N3!
Just learned about N3 and picked up Icestorm today. Now I’m working my way through the videos… and hoping I win the boxes to fill out my forces!
It really seems as thought they have put a lot of thought into these new rules and really tried to cover for all situations. Really liking the sound of all of the changes!
Shotguns will be much more usefull
looks very good!
template weapons seem nasty!
Thanks for using an physical example answered my questions perfectly.
Interesting!
While I haven’t played a game that uses silhouette templates (is Infinity the only one?), and I’m not completely sold on them, I do like how it standardizes everything. And you don’t have to worry about minis with weird poses (or custom poses that look cool but completely change the silhouette).
The Old Man in the Mountain is watching you.
Template hijinks -> terrifying and hilarious.
