Games Workshop Tease The Coming Of The Tau
March 26, 2013 by brennon
I'm fairly sure that we all know exactly what's coming this Saturday in White Dwarf and across the internet but Games Workshop have put up a teaser trailer for the new Tau in Warhammer 40,000.
The trailer shows off glimpse of what we know is the Riptide which you can find if you dig around on the internet. A whole host of other miniatures are on the way too but I'm sure you know that!
Mainly my thoughts for here are what do you think of this new release and are you excited? It's got me re-painting my old Tau with a new scheme and I'm looking forwards to seeing just what the book is like.

They at least put some effort to this teaser (unlike that worthless waste of time of Horus Heresy), but it still begs to the question, who was it aimed for? I’m sure everybody and their grandmother have seen the pictures already, so what id the function of this, oyher than mindkessly hype the product.
yes but GW pretend those pics haven’t been released so they still think nobody knows anything.
Yeah but we all know for a fact its been deliberately leaked, they all are.
Customer will get their wallets ready then lol
Oooh can’t wait to see what they got!
So will just click on a link above to the thread in News and Rumours! lol
I’d debate whether outside of gaming forums it is in fact well known; not everyone can be as internet savy as us lot.
Anyway, this trailer was likely made a while ago (so why not release it anyway), plus the GW site itself probably has a schedule with regards to what they’re going to put on the site each day.
If the early pics hadn’t been released, then this teaser trailer would have been absolutely fine; as others have said, it is an improvement on previous teaser trailers so it seems churlish to say it shouldn’t have been released simply because of a leak.
I have never ever understood why GW play these silly games
Have heard all the arguments for and none of them are convincing imho.
Just show the goddam stuff. Good grief, it isn’t top secret stealth tech
…It is a bunch of toys.
as i said in the forum about it it’s easily the best trailer they’ve ever done. hope to see more like this.
Good grief the trailers couldn’t get any worse so it is not much of an accolade
Still a waste of time, show the pics not excuses
this is the best trailer they’ve done, it’s still not great but it’s better than the usual rubbish. i’d rather watch more like this than more like the daemons or necrons ones.
Its not much better than any previous trailers so in that sense this is really nothing new. Still they keep making these even when its clear that pictures always leek so that everyone who can use internet and plays they games or are even interested from them have already seen those.
Shoddy rules, insane prices, attempts to ruin the hobby .. seriously fu GW, for real
I agree, this is a really good trailer. Really like the cinematic feel to it. Thumbs up from me. Not interested at all in Tau because space smurfs and all that and nothing beats the mouldy cheese wiff of a scabby plague marine but interested to see the new releases. Ive looked up a few online and liked what i saw but will check my mates copy of white dwarf this weekend for a good look / read.
Even in this light, you can see the paint-job is sloppy with the blending. I’m sorry, they did put some effort in this one, but… quality ? I think not.
I thought that too. I was waiting for some beautifully rendered anime or whatever and instead….. a close up of a mediocrely painted battlesuit. Yeah – great
Since they organise the Games Days, you’d think hey would show off some great Golden Demon level painting… In fact, you’d think they’d do that every month in White Dwarf.
They don’t… not anymore. I used to be inspired by their art. Now I look at that in pity, and not because I’m a better painter.
Every time I look at the Golden Deamon winners in White Dwarf (and when I used to go to Games Day), I find myself coming to the conclusion that it probably has more to do with the conversion/basing than the painting.
I wouldn’t go that far, but Slayer Sword winners definitely have to show artistry in composition, originality, and a sense of expression/narration… Something beyond technical perfection, which will only get you so far (silver, maybe gold).
This is a good thing, by the way !
SOMEONE’S BEEN WATCHING BATTLESTAR eh?
The weapons are clearly from the riptide. Would have been nice if they could’ve included some of the other new stuff, though.
Man those trailers are so thrilling …
Have to wait to see the new stuff in the flesh to judge, can’t say I’m convinced…
I want to be hyped, and I really do. I love my Tau army,
But the way GW has been run as of late makes it really hard for me to care.
Their high prices, and disrespect for retailers is not something I can throw my money behind. As much as I would like to get swept up in this release, I think I’ll sit this one out.
And any future releases as well, until they can show they deserve my money again.
If someone started making film trailers like this all the cinemas would close down and I would poke my eyes out with a spoon so that I could better appreciate their visual splendour.
IMG I knew it the Transformers are coming to Games Workshop! YES!!!!!1
That was OMG not IMG. If IMG is some boy band or fetish thing ignore it 😛
Thought it was something to do with Imperial Guard! 😛
Transformers have been at GW for ages Manpug.
Your bank balance metamorphasises from black to red when you order something from them.
They need to come correct with the balance, I trounced a 2000 pt Tau army last night with Noise Marines, Nurgle Bikers, Heldrake,Thirster and FA Daemons. Game turn two concede needs to be over for Tau! If they can make them live and pack more punch or even have better Specrules it’ll be fun to play them and against them.
As far as the paint job critique I would assume they are letting players know that a table ready paint job/scheme is just fine. 😉
Just like the Tau’s table ready rules?
Lots of GW hate this time around I see. I for one am excited and can’t wait to get my hands on a Riptide. I aspire to be as good at painting and turn out models that look just as bad as these do.
“Hate” is a big word that many people like to brandish to feel like victims.
There’s nothing wrong with holding people accountable for what they do, especially if they’re in the lead in their field.
It’s how we try to make society work, actually, from humbel baker to toy company to government.
It’s not about hating, it’s about demanding what you pay for.
They can produce whatever they want. No one forces you to buy their product, so it is not up to you to demand what they make.
This mentality is at the core of the marketing and design philosophy of GW
Doesn’t matter what we make, the fans will lap it up anyway.
I have always said that if GW starting behaving themselves I would start playing their games again.
However, the direction their design aesthetic has gone has become so far removed from what I demand of a gaming token that I doubt if I would buy many of their models.
Too many better products out there to use.
It is only toy soldiers all said and done, but at my age I want something more sophisticated than a toy that looks like it will peu-peu rubber missiles across the dining table. Though that can be fun.
So if they won’t make what I demand, I won’t buy. Which makes your argument redundant.
So I don’t see why you’re wasting your time here complaining about stuff that you don’t even play. If you don’t want their miniatures then fine, play another game. It is not as if anyone here forces you to play. I don’t like Infinity either, but do you see me bitching every time they have a release? I think not.
oh dear another don’t agree so I must be bitching type comment.
Why would you bitch at Infinity. I don’t play that either but on the whole there figures and the painting used to display releases are first class.
Last I heard this was an open forum and as I have not been rude afaik I am still entitled to have an opinion.
I’m sorry, but I hurt a little inside when someone says “GW make the best minis of all times”, which is exactly what they will tell you, at length, in the GW stores and on the web…
It’s shameless propaganda. It might have been true 20 years ago, and even then probably not… Now it would be laughable if so many people didn’t actually believe it.
It’s like saying my penis weighs a thousand pounds and has wings… It’s an obvious lie.
GW do good (sometimes great) plastics, with excellent modularity and poseability. They also did decent metal, and some Finecast references aren’t bad if you avoid the bubbly ones. Their paints are quite good, and their distribution network make them readily available everywhere (which is their true strength).
Of course, their prices are far too dear for what you’re buying, they haven’t had an innovative design a loooong while (these Tau are nothing new, nor were the necrons, nor were the daemons, nor were the Dark Angels, the Dark Eldars, the Grey Knights, the Blood Angels…), and they have now completely stopped trying to paint their studio miniatures above tabletop level.
More to the point, almost every single miniatures company out there (outside of the green plastic toy soldiers manufacturers) makes better quality miniatures than they do, and more affordable too. At least, that’s my experience.
That said, yes, GW can produce what they want… All i’m saying is let’s hold them accountable for that, and let the buyer beware.
“Hate” is the shorter ‘forum’ versions of “negativity” “intolerance” “disrespect” “resentment” “objection” etc etc. Holding GW accountable for what they do is exactly why I spend many many dollar bills to play their games. It is obviously a tactic that must be employed to get the most out of your product. The more I spend on GW the less I even care to try the also-rans version of Table Top mini wargames. Until I am tired of playing table top mini wargames I have no real reason to change hobbies. What I demand from my purchases is that they come from reputable sellers that can give me information about my purchase. I demand customer service on the highest level. I demand a chance to have fun in a casual atmosphere. I demand what “I” consider to be fair pricing for what ‘I” am willing to pay. I assume there are more adults that play this game because of the cost. People (who may or may not live in their parents’ basement delivering pizza part time) that complain that they market to 12 year olds are simply ignorant. In the USA you must be at least 16 yrs old to get a license and drive a car. That doesn’t mean that Audi is targeting 16 year olds to buy their A8. Simple logic does not always work in the complex arena of supply and demand and accountability and service and selection and legalities and distribution and vertical sales avenues.
You are still resorting to pejorative terms to discredit another person’s opinion.
You also make the mistake of assuming that your positive assessment and reactions are the benchmark for all responses.
You may buy the entire GW range 5 times over. It doesn’t affect my judgement in any way.
Sorry, My “simple logic” cannot grasp the profound intellectual intricacies and insight into consumer behaviour. I have no idea what you are on about. TBH I can’t be arsed to figure it out. That is ennui btw not hatred
If you are going to use automotive metaphors about GW it has to be a Porsche to maintain the delusion of grandeur.
“also rans”…
I had to laugh at that ! 😉
You’re very welcome to play the games and buy the minis if you want to. Nobody said the game wasn’t good or that you couldn’t like what GW does…
We must, however, strive to get a sense of proportion. Something I’m sorry to say you evidently lack.
That should read:
I disagree with some of the comments above and am excited for this release. I can’t wait to get my hands on a Riptide. I aspire to be as good at painting and turn out models that look just as bad as these do.
Hate is a much overused word on the internet.
People are entitled to dislike the quality of the paint job. If you had submitted this in the painting forum then I guarantee you would have receive a lot of credit.
But this is a showcase piece from a company who claim to be better than everyone else.
Their fans claim that GW are better than everyone else. They have employees who are basically professional painters (or so I thought) It is therefore to be expected that the painting from GW would be as perfect as is humanly possible. This is what I think most people have come to expect from the large companies.
Corvus Belli, Tercio, Cipher Studios, to name but three off the top of my head have good quality painting to display there wares. Tor Gaming have Worthy Painting to do theirs now.
Opinion is, that for some reason that in this instance, GW’s standards have slipped.
Just like my finger when scrolling the page and accidentally click negative karma. :*)
Would appreciate if someone could reinstate @liono please.
ps I meant to say that smaller companies get top painters to do excellent jobs for them.
The standards of my syntax have also slipped. apologies. Tired meltdown brain status.
I’ve yet to see anything that is markedly better than GW plastics. The new Plague Drones are an excellent mold/cast/design etc, mine had no mold lines. Granted their molds must be squeaky clean and new but still the tedium of mold line removal is a bonus compared to the older finecast Fiends I have up next. I can see through the clamshell that they are going to be a burden to de-funkify.
I suspect with the amount of GW dissension as of late that if the video would have shown Golden Demon worthy paint jobs that there would have been just as many people clamoring that “Oh they assume just anyone is willing to fade a cloak for 2 months.” GW will never please every one all the time. Along with Forge World they seem to have everything under control and booting the Canadian free loader online sellers is just a ground swell that will pass, not end things for them.
It’s interesting how some people confuse “not praising GW” and “hating GW”.
Sorry for feeding a troll, but this has to be said. I’m the first one to recognize the success of this company, and to applaud when they do something right (like with their plastics, for example), and I’d do the same fpr every other miniature company out there.
Somehow, the whole “not worshipping GW and actually pointing out the flaws and looking at other games”, that sort of thing is misconstrued as being diparaging to GW…
I don’t get that, and probably never will.
Oh, well…
Thank you for putting so simply and so clearly Romain.
That is economical and bang on the money. (no pun intended)
You cant follow automotive parallels but you connect to Romains 1000 lb penis with wings. I see who I’m dealing with here.
“Not praising” means ‘saying nothing’. The only other alternatives are “hate” or “Neutral” or “praise” and if it’s neutral it is surely not note worthy. You can try to hide it any way you can but haters gonna hate. Not just pointed at one person mind you I’m speaking about the whole community since the new policy update by GW. This thread, as you may recall, was trolled and hijacked by disparaging remarks about GW’s choice of paint jobs. It was originally posted for much more “exciting” reasons, namely is any one excited for Tau. The question was posed, what do you think of the new models and are you excited? Granted you are fully within your right to say they look like a steaming pile of doggy doo. That’s my point. The vocal minority strikes again. Internet be praised.
What? Of course I don’t believe Romain has a 1000lb penis. That would be silly.
(Does have wings though)
I knew it? that’s why he’s always behind that table.
It’s either “hate”, “love”, or “indifference”, for you, isn’t it ? There’s not the slightest nuance in feeling or intent… And no one’s allowed to voice an opinion outside these parameters. Wonderful.
Of course, by these standards, I naturally can’t say that GW has done some things right, yet criticize them on something else. I certainly couldn’t admit to having bought the occasional good miniature from GW, yet saying that I find most of their space marines to be dull… And of course, I can’t possibly disparage the paint-jobs in White Dwarf, because I don’t play The Hobbit, never mind that I actually do painting tutorials here.
Lucky for us all, we don’t live in this black and white world of yours.
Romain, I’m not saying it’s black and white. I’m really just in wonderment as to why GW receives such a brunt. I have visited other sites and the minis are in my opinion not that great. Nice and conceptually cool but not astounding. I guess I interpret it as hate because of the abundance of it. Of criticism and petty jabs. Maybe it is simply because they are the king of Table Top and heavy is the crown. I am an artist myself, I make furniture and paint and nuance is truly in my repertoire. I watch you paint and I see passion and determination but mostly joy. That is what I get from it as well. Ultimately maybe it boils down to being a fresh new player who chose GW for the game to play and have seen so many people turn on them. As if they had more than just opinions, more than just criticism but actually a say-so in the matters of the business which is just so ridiculous to me. I haven’t seen one thing from GW to deter me in my quest to have fun in this hobby. Maybe this is why they have no more public forums or fb pages or social figureheads. Too many jilted players with opinions can spoil it for the whole lot. I don’t claim to have all of the answers I just never seen so much criticism in a community above all other things I am or have been involved with. And I played Age of Conan for cry pete!
You’re right… At least in thinking gratuitous bashing is plagueing GW PR. Not that there aren’t any causes for criticism, though… Even if it definitely should be more articulate and business-informed.
How have I been put in that bin, with those people, I do not know… I’ve tried to articulate my objections as best I could !
guys. after the Dark Angels week. where is the daemon week? really want to know what you guys are thinking about it.
Will there be tau week to go through the codex and models?
I agree. There should be a Tau week…
We should also do an Aleph week, an Ariadna week, a PanOceania week, a Nomads week, a Yu-Jing week, a Mercenaries week, a Haqqislam week, a Tohaa week, a Combined army week, a Menoth week, a Cygnar week, a Cryx week, a Khador week, a Circle Orboros week, a Trollblood week, a Skorne week… And so on.
Why should 40k be the only game whose fans demand one themed week per faction ?
OH, right… 40k needs more. It needs one themed week per CHAPTER of the main faction in the game, plus all the others.
Would settle for a Freebooter’s Day never mind a Brotherhood Week! lol
Ditto Anima Tactics and a whole slew of cool games I don’t play but would love to see get some love.
Yes… Me too !
It’d be a great opportunity for me to do tutorials on miniatures you should see more often !
There’s a lot to do… And too few people to do it, unfortunately.
