You really hung in there with that brush. I’d have lost patience with it.
Looking good overall. Personally, I hate seeing obvious shade lines, so I struggle with highlighting – too perfectionistic of me. You shade / shadow a lot more strongly than I do, so this is proving very interesting.
What is your dilution ratio for the metal washes? Are you adding water or are you just relying on the moisture coming up from the wet palate?
I recommend to watch a Call of Duty lets play where the narrator just talks about whatever he feels like, while running the vid / session. That way, in the down times, you can see that you can pretty much just ramble on about whatever you want and people will still watch. 🙂

This brush was thrown away right after this tutorial… I have a tendency to cling on to my old brushes until the very last moment, and this one was a few years old… lol
I was like you once, shading very cautiously… But then I found that people weren’t impressed, and I learnt the value of a little contrast in the right place. I also speeded things up for this tutorial… It’s a really big miniature !
For the metallic washes, i can go as much as 50% or 60% water, but it all depends on the thickness/graininess of your metallic paints. It really varies from brand to brand ! I am most definitely always adding water, to everything… It’s a very rare case when I don’t add water. The palette isn’t supposed to dilute your paints at all, really, just prevent drying.
The metals were all filmed in one go, pretty much, so you can see I was pretty tired by the end… And consequently less lively and talkative than in the first tutorials. Oh well…
Oh well… Next time, I’ll try and talk more nonsense, since people seem to like it anyway !

Thank you Romain, after watching your tutorials my painting has gone from awful to slightly less awful, but my enjoyment and confidence has gone through the roof. i now use a wet palette and have some rather fine W&N sable brushes but the most important thing i have found is to mix your guidance with a rather nice red wine. My painting will probably never reach a high standard, but that is not the point, it is a hugely enjoyable time of escape and relaxation. Please keep the videos coming and do not change your presenting style, i nearly covered my keyboard in coffee when you said ‘pussy willow’ in one of your base kit videos and always enjoy your commentary.
The proper name is actually birch male inflorescences…

Would be cool to see how you’d handle a secondary light source, like a rather pronounced fill light coming from underneath, either if its a light source or just bounce light from the ground. It seems to be something that’s not done very often.
