And when Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer.

Ok, that’s a damn lie. My pile of shame is vast and there is more Hellboy out there and coming for Mantic to torment me with, but for now the project is done.  Everything I bought is painted.

I have had some very flattering feedback along the way so I’ll just finish this with some group shots of The Whole Damn Thing in its entirety.

It is entirely possible I missed some close up shots of a few pieces so let me know if you want to see any close ups and I’ll add them somewhere.

Thanks for following, I’m moving on to some other neglected things now.

Hellboy arrives in Mexico

Long ago, I started this project with heroes.  So I thought it fitting to finish with the final heroes from the Kickstarter and the last Hellboy in the box.

Quite pleased with how they turned out, the colours came together for a nicely punchy recreation of the comics I think.

The leotards are hawk turquoise shaded up with electric blue.  The yellows are golden yellow glazed with orange and highlighted with ice yellow.

For Hellboy his skin is scarlet red shaded with purple.  The horns and fist are terracotta red mixed with pale skin for the highlights.

The final adversary complete, just four models remain…

This dapper gent is Count Vladimir Girescu, a Vampiric Prussian Hussar.  In the comic he is clad in black, riding a black steed.  I was not in the mood for that and googled something more striking.

Oni (five more to go!)

Excuse the pun.  I have detoured a touch from the Mexico expansion to get the last two bosses done, one of which is the Oni.  A little bit of research tells me that Oni are typically depicted as being either red or blue skinned, as Hellboy is red I went blue.

He was fun to paint, and I am now so very close to finishing the Kickstarter….

Giant bats are done just in time for the years end.  That is the last of the Mexico minions which leaves seven models left to finish then I’m done with the Hellboy Kickstarter.  Would have been nice to finish within 2020 but oh well.

I tried something slightly different on the wings here and used purple to share them.  I just didn’t want to paint grey shades so went with it.  I think it’s ok on a comic book look but not exactly what I had in mind (I ended up knocking it back with charcoal grey glaze).  But no matter, good enough!

Continuing with the Mexico expansion, the mounted and on foot versions of the Conquistadors are done.

The comic colours were a bit brown for me so I decided to look up some paintings depicting the era and went for something with more punch.  Then rusted the metals and tried to grubby them up a little.

Crypt Spirits

Our next completed thing is a trio of Crypt Spirits!  Again taking my lead from the comics I decided to try a very limited palette for a very pale look.  I wanted enough variety in colours to bring out the details of the sculpt, but stick close to the whiteness of the comic.

I did consider ‘uplighting’ them with a green glow but once I got this far I wasn’t sure they actually needed it.

The dresses are Ivory white shaded with a little Stonewall Grey mixed in.  The skin is Elfic Flesh washed with sepia then re-touched with Elfic Flesh again.  For the hair I used Stonewall Grey again, washed with Drakenhoff Nightshade (blue to you and I) and highlighted backup with… Stonewall Grey!

There was also a little bit of nuln oil used around the neckline of the dress and for the mouth.
