About the Project

MDF bases finally getting used.MDF bases finally getting used.

Instead of throwing these tiny bottles in the recycling, most of which ends up being burned in Indonesia, I decided to make some terrain out of them. I grabbed my bits box and played around with some ideas.

I had a load of MDF bases which I’ll never use, so I used the long bases to double up some bottles, and the round bases to cover the text on the bottom of the bottles.

After a bit of testing I found that superglue sticks these plastic bottles just fine.

The MDF also adds a bit of weight and stability.

More bases getting usedMore bases getting used

I had a load of bases from Shadows of Brimstone which have a cool bevelled edge. I stuck those on top and bottom.

I also had a bunch of bits from a Gundam display kit called Octagon. I used those to hide the oval bases and add a bit of industrialism to them. I also added a ladder from a bit of sprue and some random other bits.

Another way to climb up.Another way to climb up.

I had a sprue of rungs from a Rogue Trader Rhino kit. The Rhino is long gone, but the rungs are ideal for climbing up the side of a yoghurt drink.

I even recycled the straws that they inexplicably come with. I used strips of plasticard to wrap around the pipes to keep them straight and add detail.

All primed black. It stopped raining for an hour especially so I could do this (rainy season in Japan now).

Military greenMilitary green

I picked this green because I had a lot of it, and it’s a nice colour. It also goes on very well over the black primer.

A slightly lighter greenA slightly lighter green

I grabbed a lighter green and did a very rough edge weathering with a big old brush and a few beers. The key is – not to be careful at all!

I sloshed this varnish over everything. Super cheap, very protective and even water soluble. Big brush and several beers used.
