### Start of shameless copy and paste ###
First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…
https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/
https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/
Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.
First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.
You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.
If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.
A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.
Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.
Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)
And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv
If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now-2025-edition/
### End of shameless copy and paste ###
Question of the week:
- A bit different this week, just to shake things up: What is your favourite dinner for the weekends. You know the kind of meal you take extra special care for and time so it will be really good.
And now back to the show.
February 7, 2026 at 1:26 pm #1963108My pledge: get my taxes sorted, maybe paint some minis
Answer: Most of the times it’s Chilli. Simply because a good chilly simmers a long time on the oven and needs to be taken care of over the day. Regardless if it’s Chilli con carne, a simple bean chilli or something in between. Like with a good chicken soup: it takes time.
Music!
February 7, 2026 at 2:28 pm #1963109I eat chili almost every day …
or rather: I call it chili, but it’s just a pre-packaged ‘chili sin carne’ added to minced meat …
I did discover that adding a few slices of pickled jalapeno’s really adds a bit of heat to the mix.
As all of this can be done in a single pan and doesn’t require much brain power it’s become my default meal.I’m not much of a cook, so anything I make tends to be on the ‘follow instructions on packet’ kind of deal 😀
Food for one person requires too many things that are only sold in large quantities with an expiration date that will end before I’ve used even a quarter.

I didn’t manage to put the final touches on my doors, so that’s going to be the thing to do this week.
Music that feels appropiate to the theme this week:
February 7, 2026 at 2:53 pm #1963110Pledge of the week… try not to be crap GM tomorrow.
I know what you mean @limburger as I live alone and I can call my culinary skills survival cooking… in the sense that I have never given myself food poisoning.
I used to live on tinned and frozen meals, but I’m trying to budget better now and make an effort to cook fresh ingredients when I can, but I still rely on frozen and tinned for some meals.
Sunday lunch is a meal shared with my sister and she usually cooks it. Meat, potatoes, two veg… the traditional british sunday.
I tend to cook midweek for us and my efforts often involve pasta.
I do occasionally cook myself a curry with an assortment of fresh ingredients stir fried with something meaty and throw a jar of something like a jalfrezi, or balti in. Rice or noodles with that. Not usually a weekend meal, but the question was about making an effort too.
And there are times when you just want comfort food and that does not require much effort;
February 7, 2026 at 4:26 pm #1963111Pledge: scratch the itch for some Frostgrave by painting up some of my fantasy stash and get round to building those 40k models I was going to do last week before I got distracted by Tracy Island.
I’ve been fighting with a squirrel this weekend over it trying to make a nest on my balcony… the temptation to cook it is very strong! Joking aside, I also live alone but I take the path of using the weekend to cook something nice that I can then have as leftovers for the first half of the week. I’m not someone who minds eating the same thing three or four nights in a row and it makes my laziness feel less real if I have something that took effort days earlier to eat. This weekend it is a chicken biriyani.
In honour of the squirrel battle, obviously my music choice had to be Foamy
February 7, 2026 at 5:05 pm #1963112Pledge: finish the first squad of Tau, and then back to Blood Angels. I’m tired of commissions, and I’ve let people know these are the last ones. I want to paint for myself again.
Food: weekends I usually do a bbq, I grill year round thanks to the magic of natural gas.
Don’t forget to eat your paisley!
February 7, 2026 at 6:17 pm #1963149Pledge: plan to complete the gatehouse for terrainfest as commented on the YouTube video there’s still time to get it done, no hard deadline. This has motivated me considering the issue with my airbrush nozzle breaking.
For dinner I don’t really have a favourite. My wife is vegetarian and I hate cooking two separate meals. Between this, a toddler and making sure nothing ends up out of date I usually just make what is going to expire.
Does anyone else have this issue of supermarket food simply having less than a couple of days. It feels like I can never get anything fresh that will last more than 3 days. It’s like they don’t stock up when it’s a five day shelf life.
Usually I’ll get a good meal at work of roasted duck or whatever has been given away because it can’t be used for various reasons such as individual food requests for functions ect. Recently I had these amazing lamb koftas with yogurt. I work fine dining it’s one of the perks of my job.

For a while I had this ‘meal subscription’ thing where they’d deliver the recipes and all the ingredients to cook a meal.
It helped me learn to cook, but it also taught me that I simply don’t want to spend a lot of time just to eat something that may or may not taste good. Plus these things never ever appear to have the option for either a single meal each week. Having to be at home for the delivery also meant that what little free time I have was wasted on waiting for the delivery. The worst part was that they rarely had anything simple like a bit of meat + veggies + potatoes. Everything had to be exotic and weird. I’m not a picky eater (brussel sprouts are practically the only thing I’d avoid), but I also don’t want to experiment when I just want a hot meal.
It was quite a learning experience, but the one thing it did teach me was that preparing ingredients before you start cooking is really effective at making the entire process fast. I still don’t like trying to time more than a single pan.

If you don’t eat your meat, you can’t have any pudding 😉
February 7, 2026 at 6:59 pm #1963159Does anyone else have this issue of supermarket food simply having less than a couple of days.
Yepp. Sadly many fresh produce things from the supermarket go off quickly. We plan our meals accordingly. Fridays is grocery shopping for the week, for the next three days meals are made with the stuff that could go bad and after that it’s meals like “spaghetti with minced meat” and similar 😉
February 7, 2026 at 7:35 pm #1963167I miss all the tropical fruits I left behind in Australia reading these posts. UK just simply can’t get juicy sweet mangoes and the bananas taste always chalky. Clearly not at fault for not growing here, I just miss it.
February 7, 2026 at 7:42 pm #1963168isn’t spaghetti bolognese simply an excuse to throw all left-over veggies in a pan and call it a day *eh* sauce ?
Same thing with ratatouille … and goulash / chili …
In fact I’d swear there are loads of recipes that were more or less made because someone had left over bits from their previous meals. The mistake we tend to make is to think that we need exact amounts when in reality it was just whatever you had add hand with a couple of spices to balance the flavour.
Remember : freezers are a relatively new invention. In ye olden days they had to either eat it or find a way to preserve the food using any number of methods.
(hey … look at me … I pretend to know how to cook 😉 )
February 8, 2026 at 7:34 am #1963202Yes that is pretty much part of my job so they food cost % is lower. Beef Trimmings become mince for burgers for example.
What I recommend is buying a bag of frozen diced mirepoix and diced onions and keeping them in your freezer for this reason.
I end up having several tubs of Bolognese frozen from different weeks that end up making a lasagne at the end of the month.
You should only home cooked freeze things for one month by the way.
February 8, 2026 at 10:57 am #1963219This week’s pledge is to try and find an Olympian model for the painting competition. I’m struggling with this one, as I don’t want to buy anything specifically for the contest. Failing that, I’ll be painting some more Heroe’s 3 minis.
- A bit different this week, just to shake things up: What is your favourite dinner for the weekends. You know the kind of meal you take extra special care for and time so it will be really good. – I’ve recently got back into cooking a Sunday roast for the kids on a Sunday. Other than that I don’t have a special weekend meal.
February 8, 2026 at 2:08 pm #1963245Pledge: Finish my Ork Dreadnaughts and then getting on to finishing my Hyena Guard miniatures for a commission.
Weekend special dinner: In these cold winter months, I love doing something that can be baked in the oven. Gnocchi roasted with mushrooms and then coated in a fresh sage, parmesan and cream sauce is a real favourite at the moment. Or, I’ll do a burger night with everyone’s choice of extras.
Listening, at the moment it’s the James retrospective Nothing But Love – 3 CDs over their 40+ year career. Tim Booth has one of the most stunning voices of any singer around, and as a band they just get better and better

February 8, 2026 at 4:19 pm #1963249Pledge: Get on with the first half of the Saxon commission I’ve been given. I got my entry in for the PaintComp already so I’m feeling ahead of the month.
Answer: As lots of you have mentioned something that can cook for a long time is worth spending some extra care on. Chilli is definitely one of those. Like a few of you I’m mostly cooking for one (and an ever hopeful dog) but still make big dishes and then have leftovers for lunches in the week. For a special meal the family favourite is beef wellington with scallop potatoes. Both take about two hours of prep and cooking and two cooks working in the kitchen together to get them turned out at the same time as each other. I find cooking enjoyable and relaxing so will probably spend longer on it than is absolutely necessary.
And there are times when you just want comfort food and that does not require much effort;
@pagan8th Comfort food often requires less effort than other things. In this house it is almost no effort as most of the best sorts come from a take away 😀 Self care is important and I spend a lot of time cooking so getting a take away is therefore an extra treat. That said I do love a good crumble and custard and can make crumble fairly quickly. Nobody spends time making their own custard surely? It comes in lovely pots from the supermarket.
@gorram squirrel battle updates during the week please.
@holly You are so right about James. They are great and have only got better with age, theirs and mine 🙂
