The (metal) minis are beautiful and easier to paint to a higher standard and worth the effort (if that is what you want). Even if you don’t try any harder, they will look better. That’s an upside, even if you […]

Good call on the Zahn trilogy. Excellent Star Wars.
I can’t deal with GW fiction because they have so many factions and characters with names that can’t be pronouced in what I assume is a feeble attempt at copyright protection. If I get to name that I can’t say out loud then I puts me off the book.

I think I’ve got plenty that haven’t been mentioned yet :
- JRR Tolkien – The Hobbite / Lord of the Rings
- Douglas Adams – The Hitchhikers’ Guide trilogy in 5 books … (yeah, the first two are the best.)
- Stephen King – The Dark Half / It / Tommyknockers / The Shining / Pet Semetary / Eyes of the Dragon / Misery / Carrie / Christine / The Dead…

I’ll echo The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and The Lord of the Rings, both incredibly formative books for me. Also:
Dune by Frank Herbert. I’ve never made it past the third book, but I re-read the original novel regularly.
Just about anything by Robert E. Howard. He’s most famous for Conan, and those stories are arguably his best work, but…[Read more]

you say ‘GW is ripping off people’ … but how sure are we about that ?
Without a breakdown of costs and their margins you can’t be sure.
For all we know they do a pretty damned good job at setting a price that is reasonable for the amount of effort involved (and the overhead they have). I wished they made better games, because I know they can do…[Read more] -

The first three books of GW’s Horus Heresy series – they are quite good; the fourth one is as well, but it’s near impossible to find for some reason.

It just so happens to be a Thursday when this idea occured to me… but I think it might be good idea to share a list of books and authors that inspired us all over the years.
So I’ll start things off with:
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien (and the Hobbit that led me to LotR).
Magician…[Read more]

Most reviews of Infinity that I read/watch include some mention of “this game is complex to learn.” And in a hobby space that is increasingly focused towards streamlining & ease-of-play that’s kind of a dealbreaker.

With the exception of 1 nationwide chain and 1 RC car shop, all other local hobby shops have disappeared over the past 15-20 years, thanks primarily to the interwebs, so shopping locally isn’t an option.
Ditto for game stores, there are currently 2 in my city, they have very little stock, what stock they do have is the most recent only and…[Read more]

Yeah I’ve read Lord of the rings several times and more recently on audiobook, which I found quite good, particularly for those sections that can be a slog.
a recommended reading section is a decent idea, I’ve come across lists like that in Facebook groups and the like when I used to frequent such hellscapes.
maybe an OTT book club!

Maybe we need a forum of ‘required reading for gamers’… or at the very least recommended reading.

Hah! I’m safe on that one! I’ve read The Hobbit (in German) and I’ve read LotR (in English)
Do I remember anything? Barely. But I did flocking read them! Plus some of the other works via the means of audiobooks

I’m scared to ask, but who hasn’t read Lord of the Rings? (watching the movies does not count)
