Approaching The Gates Of Antares: Project VLOG – Building The Armies!

Supported by (Turn Off)

Join us as we work on putting together two full armies for Beyond The Gates Of Antares. We're looking at building and painting both a Boromite and Algoryn force for this game by Warlord Games...

Don't forget you can look at grabbing the Starter Set for this game which features the Ghar and Concord called The Xilos Horizon now and get some additional pre-order features.

Will you be getting stuck in with us?

We Have the New Starter Box In The Studio!

Warren hefts the mighty Starter Box for Beyond The Gates Of Antares known as The Xilos Horizon. We won't get stuck into the box just yet, you'll have to wait for an unboxing, but it's got a lot of stuff inside it!

What's In The Boromite Force?

We're now cracking open the clam packs on the Boromite army for Beyond The Gates Of Antares and looking at what we have to work with to make our army so we can get playing.

There's quite a bit of mining equipment turned weaponry in here!

What's In The Algoryn Force?

We delve into the Algoryn collection we have from Warlord Games for Beyond The Gates Of Antares and make sure that we have everything!

If you picked Algoryn as your army of choice where did you start?

Warren & John Pick The Army Colours

We're kicking things off by taking a look at the range of colours we have on offer and decide on how we're going to begin painting both of these armies, the Boromites and the Algoryn. We'll be using Army Painter to make sure we can get some good base colours down quickly.

What schemes have you gone for with your Beyond The Gates Of Antares armies?

This is a superb idea and embraces a different aspect of the hobby. I often find myself hamstrung cos I want to get it onto the table fast, but when it comes to the painting I fear that if I don’t paint them slowly and thoroughly they’d look rubbish! I look forward to being proved wrong 🙂

I used to be a 4-highlight-layers painter, but then I had kids. I still get most of my stuff that makes it to the table painted to a decent gaming standard, but I’m spending a couple of hours on a squad instead of several days on each model. And a good-looking basic paint job is far, far better than bare metal or plastic.

The 2 coolest factions as far as I’m concerned!! Great stuff 😀

This will be fun for me to watch as I am trying paint a lot of minis with very little time on my side. Please update as much as possible.

Great to see this! I absolutely love Antares, and have a big Concord, and starts of Ghar and Freeborn forces been playing it for nearly a year now and cant wait to get the final release version. Good luck with the armies!

Love this game! I have all factions which are slowly taking over the war room! I have written quite a bit on Antares myself over on Warlord’s website, and in Tabletop Gaming Magazine…with more to follow. Glad the chaps are getting to grips with it here too! Just wait and see whats coming…

I’ve got Algoryn and Concord forces a little under halfway done right now. Trying to grind through and get them finished by the 7th for launch day. I’ve been following the development of this game since the KS and am really excited to get it on the table.

Looks like these armies are pretty nearly in line with what I’m putting together for mine.

Glad to see some Antares content here. I can’t wait to get the box set myself. I have played several games using the Beta rules with the two forces that you are assembling. I did my Boromites using the same colors that you have chosen. For my Algoryn I wanted to be different(and hate painting that much red). So I based them in vellejo Russian uniform green with the shoulders and breast plate done in dragon red from the warpaint line. When the box arrives the concord are going to end up looking like storm troopers or clone trooper no… Read more »

You’re really digging in with this series. I’m very impressed with the detail and in depth discussion. Also, it’s all in focus! 😎

Really nice minis, I’ve heard bad things about them but seeing them myself I think the sculpts are nice! Love the stealth team (can’t remember what they are called).

How many would people recommend the rule set by the way?

I would. It’s essentially Bolt Action in space, with the additional caveat that units have a more detail stat line to allow the representation of various species and equipment as opposed to Bolt Action’s conceit that really, except for training, it’s all Human Men fighting each other with similar gear.

Thanks man, sounds good!

I would also add that the reaction system, which in BA is very limited, is expanded and enhanced in a very appropriate way for a Sci-Fi game. One of the reasons 40K was never a big appeal to me was because the game was quite static and nothing can be done outside the player turn.

It all looks good. For washes in think I still prefer the future wash method where you can control the flow and strength of the wash a bit more easily.,it alsomeans you can add the highlights before the wash but I don’t even do that anymore. Just want them on the table

I’m a big fan of the washes from Secret Weapon Miniatures. There’s a wide variety of colors you can use straight from the bottle, and they’re pre-thinned to a consistency that’s almost always just right. Anything to make the most the limited amount of painting time I still have.

Those are exactly the two armies I have and I was looking for a nice and fast way to paint the Boromites. Thank John! they look really really nice.

If only it were these 2 forces in the starter set! 🙁 … I agree, these are looking really good now.
I love the idea of a frozen snow/tundra planet.

You sodding B@st@rds!!!! I have been steadfastly resisting this release ( even though it was written and designed by that delightful Mr Rick Preistly) , telling myself that it’s okay because the models don’t look that good . No you blokes have to go ahead , do this exellent series and in the process , make it very apparent that the models actually look quite okay. My wallent is currently on the phone to the local constabulary reporting me for abuse, because I have just pre ordered the starter set. I hope you are satisfied !!!! Hands down one of my favorite series pieces that’s been done on BoW! Would like to see this expanded on and include a little background as Warren mentioned in the first video and conclude with either a “quick-start” overview of how to play or even a full battle report. Preferably both! Would be great to see this approach applied to more game systems too.

I know this has me motivated to use the same process to get all my Warpath armies to the table quickly as well. Thanks for the motivation and inspiration!

i have to say that i wasn’t a fan of the red and yellow armor but it works well on a snowy board! ok it doesn’t make any sense if you think of tactical camouflage BUT, it works in showing WHERE are the troops wich is basilar when making battle reports!^^

Hello John,
What are your tips for painting and basing spotter models?
e.g. undercoating/painting the spotter and flocking/painting/varnishing the base without getting paint over the plastic stand?
