Oriskany Plays at the Table Freeman's Farm

Oriskany Plays at the Table Freeman's Farm

I was absurdly fortunate to squeeze my way into a game of Crucible of War on Saturday night.  This is a game designed and presented by Marvin and Jamie Veeder, and our scenario was “Burgoyne’s Gamble,” recreating the central action at the pivotal First Battle of Freeman’s Farm in the American Revolution, 17 September, 1777.

People who follow my work know I have a keen interest in this battle, a whole article series on this campaign was presented on OnTableTop back in 2017 (240th Anniversary).  But these guys are not only avid game players, designers, and presenters, but also re-enactors that live very close to these actual battlefields.  It was so much fun not only to play the game (thanks again for squeezing me in at the last minute), but also just talk with fellow history buffs with an intense love for this particular period, campaign, and battle.

Wouldn’t you know it, I wound up with Major-General Benedict Arnold, coming in on the American left, starting with Ebenezer Learned’s Brigade.  More Massachusetts and eventually New York regiments came in, along with additional British units and even Tory Canadians on my extreme left.  Other players had to leave, so soon I found myself commanding the whole American left.  I was able to take control, reorganize the wing, restore order, and eventually start a united push-back on the American left, even as the right more or less crumbled under assault from von Reidesel’s rear flank attack.

The system was great.  It rewards players “organically” for employing real life linear tactics, namely in the form of additional morale resilience.  Commanders in their realistic place also allow for a morale bonus, but there are no “god-hero” rules or anything like that.  The order assignment, declaration, and turn sequences were also great – and there were even hidden movement and “dummy counters” laid down in the dense New York forest, where no one really knows where the enemy is until contact is made (and THEN minis are placed on the table).

In summary, massive thanks to Marvin and Jamie for including me in their game (complete with order phases being announced by actual cavalry bugle calls).  Huge fun, at one point I was laughing so hard I had literal tears on my cheeks.  It’s a fast and furious black powder game, perfectly suited for the “guerrilla linear” tactics of the American Revolution (especially the New York 77 campaign).  Not sure it would fully translate into “full” open-field Napoleonic, but definitely perfect for the smaller, sharper actions of the Peninsular Campaign.

Bonus Post - Battle of Cowpens

This battle took place on January 17, 1781, near the end of the American Revolution.  It is also the battle “featured” in the climax of the movie The Patriot, although of course these wargamers came much, much closer to the reality of the event.

Bonus Post - Fist Full of Kilos

And now for something completely different … a Cold War submarine warfare game called “Fist Full of Kilos,” where a Soviet force of “Kilo” class attack submarines was serving as spearhead for a landing force somewhere in the Baltic.  The Swedish Navy was all  that stood in their way.  I like how the Soviet surface fleet (not on the table yet) was mounted raised platforms so the subs would still be “beneath” them.

Bonus Post - Battle of Magnesia - 6mm Ancients

Early in the con we came across a game of “To the Strongest” – representing the Battle of Magnesia.  This was fought in 190 BC between the Romans and the Seleucids in what is today western Turkey.  The Romans found success with a pre-imperial, pre-Marius Reform “citizen” army.  The problem with this model army was that it was not sustainable in the strategic sense, especially as Roman territory continued to expand.

Heyyyyyyy! Happy Saturday!

oriskany

Thanks for checking us out! We’re but humble, lost circus performers … trying to fill in for the Weekender.

apologizes for the lack of Burrows & Badgers.

templar007

It’s the Weekender Hobby Live Blog!

(see what I did there ?)

I plan to hobby my butt off today and stay glued to this Blog to view/watch the articles roll in.

(oh, and I’m slow smoking ribs today as well). Serious hobby projects work up an appetite)

oriskany

Those ribs sound good! :p

Wish you guys had more coverage on the WWI game from Firelock as well as where they are now with Oak and Iron. I know you had a post and video for day 1, but that seemed to gloss over things.

oriskany

We got you covered on the Blood & Valor (Firelock WW1). One of the later videos in Blog part 2 is a whole turn sequence play through.

elysium64

I would like a video/more coverage of Black Sun as tempted by the KS

kbog

This is seconded – Tour of Darkness on the tabletop is just to good to miss, backing already but a review may make me spend more (ha ha ha, as if I had the funds)

oriskany

We were kinda sticking to historical tables? I photographed the Black Sun table and put up a post on it because my friend was playing it. Hopefully he can provide some insight into how the game played?

cbrenner

The game played well. Basics were easy to pick up. Even though it is I go U go you roll a d6 to see who is able to activate. Ranged combat can be deadly. Definitely want to use cover. Wish I had an opportunity for close combat but ran out of time. The US M79’s were effective if you bunched up. Fun game even with 7 or 8 just learning.

oriskany

Awesome – thanks for the AAR! 🙂

torros

There is s 6mm modern game started an hour ago on table HR 73 that looks interesting

oriskany

We did look for it, – did not see it. We had some cancellations and they moved some tables around. That schedule and map they provided became obsolete VERY quickly.

torros

No worries . I only noticed it because they posted on Facebook. The game might have been over by the time I posted

oriskany

Was this the one with the oil rig? It was the only modern game I saw we didn’t get to BESIDES the Team Yankee tournament.

amachan

I would like to see more medieval, dark age, Roman, ancients kind of stuff if that’s possible.

oriskany

I do have some photo galleries of “To The Strongest” I can put up in a Bonus Post. 😀

Meanwhile, did you see us talk about the Romans vs. Irish tables (two posts, actually), with Clash of Spears (twice) and Justin with “We Who are About to Die?”

We didn’t want this to turn into a all WW2-fest, we really tried to hit every genre that was represented, IF the table looked good.

oriskany

Warhammer ancients was also featured.

amachan

I was just wondering if there was more. Thanks for covering what you could.

oriskany

No worries. We put up some 6mm “To the Strongest” Romans at the very end of Part 2. 🙂

alfonsothetraitor

I really need to goto Historicon one of these years.

oriskany

Apparently this was the first year at a new venue. The old one wasn’t very good, everyone seemed happy with this one.

yavasa

Digging through tons of material makes me a happy man today 🙂

oriskany

Got an operational-level wargame called “Poland Defiant” – the whole 1939 campaign on one table. (Revolution Games)

oriskany

Thanks for all the positive feedback on the coverage, everyone! We really tried to get a little of everything …

Now … There were a COUPLE tables we legit missed and I wish we could have gotten.

There was a 54mm tank battle … yes, 54mm TANKS … Okay, like four tanks, but still … but by the time we reached them they were taking the table down.

The “Eat Hitler” table would have been great just for a laugh – Hitler invents a time machine in his bunker to try to re-do World War II … screws it up, goes back much too far in time, winds up in the Cretaceous. Now you play as dinosaurs and the objective is to chase down and eat Hitler, Eva Braun, Blondi the Dog, and various other Nazi cronies. Again, we reached him as he was taking down the table.

There was one really nice “Very British Civil War” table somewhere in Scotland judging from the flags … but we just never reached it.

There was an “American Presidential Race 2020” that we DID reach (American political and social satire skirmish game mixed with a zombies because why not), but the guy setting it up was running late, friendly but super stressed, and politely declined the interview because he was beyond short on time. Also, there were a few jokes on the table that just MIGHT have caused a little friction … I found them hilarious but others might not have.

cbrenner

Great coverage guys. Fantastic getting to meet and talk with , and . Nice to see and hear about games and gamers at my reasonably local convention. I hope you all get a chance to come back.

oriskany

I would certainly love to come back next year .
