Spartan Games & Microsoft Team Up For Halo Miniatures Game!
February 9, 2015 by lloyd
We saw the teaser over the weekend and now it's become a reality. Spartan Games and Microsoft have teamed up to bring the Halo Universe to the tabletop with not just space combat but also ground combat too! Best part is, it's all coming out in 2015!!!
The Halo Universe is richly developed from its past life as a Bungie project and even now as one through 343 Studios. It's also one of the most well loved shooter franchises out there and Master Chief himself is a massive video gaming icon on par with the likes of Mario and Sonic nowadays.
Above you can see some of the ship designs that Spartan Games have been working on for both the UNSC Human Fleet and the Covenant one. The battles in space aren't ones that we've really encountered before in the Halo-verse so it will be interesting to see how they play out on the tabletop. With Firestorm Armada under their belt it's pretty easy to see Spartan doing something great with this.
But that's not all. As well as the spaceship battles Spartan Games are bringing you down to the installations of the Halo rings with a bump. Prepare the ODSTs and get ready for a hell dive as they're also working on a ground combat game as well! Spartans and UNSC Marines have been mentioned in the press release but no more than that right now. We're excited!
"All you green horns who wanted to see the Covenant up close; this is your lucky day!"
Keep your eyes peeled for future updates on this!

Had no idea about this until I just got home from work. “Best Monday of 2015” (so far).
The only news that would’ve been better than this (barring huge windfalls and the like) would be if Starcraft had decided to get into the 28mm biz. I hope the ground-based game is 28mm but even if they go 15 or 20 I could still see me getting into it 😀
OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD.
OH. MY. GOD.
THIS IS NOT A DREAM. HOLY HELL THIS IS REAL. I’M JUMPING ABOUT.
I CANT CALM DOWN, THIS IS IMMENSE.
BREATHE… BREATHE… calm… right, I think I’m calm…
I’m done… Man…
Is this the advertised big news that was coming on Monday?
lol yes, rest easy mate this was it 😉
Cool 🙂
or is it?
Firestorm and Dystopian players, prepare to get jack all when Spartan plays with their game of the month idea.
Lol.
Oooooooooo looks sweet!
Spartan Games take more of my money!
Thanks for the quick info BoWLloyd! This will be interesting to follow. I can´t get anymore info from their website though, except: “Spartan Games is to produce Halo tabletop miniatures games.”
Finally I can see the blog post! For a minute I was about to download IE, thinking that the collaboration with Microsoft made it impossible to follow the blog in Google Chrome. 😉
Yep their blog post was shifting around a bit but it’s all sorted 🙂
If Spartan get this right, this could have a huge impact on wargaming
“assaulting ground defences with Spartans and UNSC Marines?” Does that sound like 28mm or 10mm guys and girls? Or both. 🙂
I have a sneaking suspicion that we are going to get three ‘different’ games out of this – fleet scale (ala Firestorm Armada), epic scale (ala Planetfall) and a ~30mm skirmish game ala Dystopian Legions / Spec Ops.
Well that is interesting news indeed.
Mannnn, I was /just/ about to buy into SW: Armada… now what?
Did nobody notice Spartan’s logo change to ‘the other Spartan’ helmet on their blog last week? None too subtle, but very funny. Great to see that they have confirmed it. To be fair I wasn’t expecting the fleet game first even though it seems obvious now, I just assumed it was going to be an infantry game.
Definitely agree they have a rich universe and IP to draw upon. Ships look fantastic, might actually give me pause for thought now when Hawk reveal a bit more on their DZC Fleet game. Too many choices; only just retired Babylon 5.
..Oh wait, you did! Good to know I’m staying current sheesh.
I know nothing much about HALO but it looks interesting – I have seen the live action game trailers and always wondered why no movie…
Agraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Sweettttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt!
Please hurry up and complete…..especially the ground play stuff.
I soooo want to see a Warthog in 28 mm scale! And Spartan’s. And Elites!
And just to re-iterate….Agraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
@warzen when did you find out as you seemed to know more then you let on, on friday when i asked?
@warzan i should learn to read back before i post, when did you find out, as you seemed to know more then you let on, on friday when i messaged you?
I’m not at liberty to say mate 🙂
Ground game needs to be 10mm or 15mm to really catch my interest. The 28mm skirmish / platoon-sized battle sci-fi market is ultra-saturated these days. Besides, can you imagine the enormity of something like a Covenant Scarab in 28mm?
Spartan Games excels at doing naval / space naval games (Uncharted Seas / Firestorm Armada / Dystopian Wars) and small-scale model land wars (Dystopian Wars / Firestorm Planetfall) In 10mm or 15mm you can really get the cool toys on the table.
I did call it on the forum; )
But the scale is a surprise my guess would have been a ground combat game in 10, 15 or 28 mm
To start with
Ooooooh ****! Yup nergasm right here!
This’s intresting.
If done right, I think Spartan might have a huge success with this game.
Oh, man. When can I pre-order my M808B “Scorpion” Main Battle Tank?
This just in: Plastics!
Means it wont’ really cut into Spartan’s ability to produce their in-house properties, which was a big concern for me. So have at it!
LOL and I just posted that.. plastics eh… that could be very interesting
I’m Erion or erion just about everywhere I’ve ever posted.
I dont know, I love spartan I think there games are great and their models are soooo good. I don’t know if they can handle this (order wise) they will make a great looking / playing game… They might implode though thought over work… I REALLY hope not
I, too, had some genuine concern about Spartan’s ability to keep up production on their in-house games while supporting this License. Like, why would they even bother continuing Planetfall and Armada when they could be doing HALO instead. But Spartan Neil posted on the forums a few bullet points about materials (Plastics!) and long-term planning (in the works since early 2014) That have done a good bit to put those fears to bed.
What’s your name on the forum?? I’ll poke you lol.
I will have to read this . I wonder if planet fall was a test bed for rules … Seems likely
Oh, was thinking about dropship commander but now I think I’ll hold off and see how halo compares. Hope the scale for the ground forces is in epic category although I can easily see it being more a 28mm skirmish. If it is, it’s tough competition for the terminator game coming out, both are excellent ips.
Agreed on Ground Scale. I can already play a skirmish with a couple of Spartans vs. a few dozen covenant on my Xbox.
Give me a grand battle with the kinds of fantastic small-scaled models we all know Spartan Games is capable of producing. With Scorpion Tanks and Scarab Walkers and Warthogs and Banshees and…
My mind blew mere seconds before my wallet. Looking forward to this even if it turns out to be a poor game I want those ships! I’ve even promised the wife a new engagement ring during our monthly model purchasing negotiating session 🙂
I never bought any games from Spartans. How’s their rule set? is it as good as BFG from GW? Can’t wait to see the skirmish scale (32mm,28mm,15mm or less?)
I would say FSA is so much better then battle fleet (for one you can actuly buy stuff for it) but also all the races are very unique and the game is easy to learn with lots to do in it
Spartan’s Games (not just FSA) are a lot of fun. Buckets of Dice. Big Chunky Models that are well-detailed and eye-catching. And the exploding d6 mechanic that means even the most improbable shot has an outside chance of being catastrophically successful.
Yeah I’m a die hard DW player trying to get Spartan to make a fleet for me lol maybe if I was Microsoft they would have lol
They almost did for me with a full KoD fleet 😉
We are so spoiled for choice at the moment – FS:A, SW:X wing, SW:A or the upcoming Halo and fleet game from Hawk … For space fleet games
Personally I can see me throwing some cash after at least half of those games … I am a sad man I know 🙂
Wasn’t there a few years back a 28mm figure game for Halo, about the time there second computer game was out, can’t remember the company that produced it though?!
http://heroclix.com/category/heroclix/halo/#axzz3RHZfxyUh
this?
Didn’t know about this, but the one I was thinking of spartens where all blue plastic and the aliens were all red plastic and a large box with dozens of figures and cardboard scenery.
Posible this was the Halo Interactive Board Game?
Now here’s hoping it is a seperate game that is compatable with firestorm armada. Oh and Planet Fall and Spec Ops ;p
I love spartan games so much.
Also hoping for the flood for ground forces game.
Spartan Neil said on the company forums they’ll be separate games with their own mechanics.
So…a game with two factions? The novelty will wear thin really fast.
X-wing was a game with two factions until they announced Scum And Villainy. Didn’t stop people from playing the heck out of it for two years – to the point where core units are still consistently out of stock at local game stores.
Yeah but Fantasy Flight Fans are like a cult, they buy what they are told to
You ad Star Wars fans to that, and you just got zombies with wallets
Depending on when in the Halo universe this takes place, you could have the Flood as a factio. Or if it’s after Halo 4, the Forerunners could be a faction, because who knows what the Didact woke up as well, especially if it’s involving fighting for the other Halo instalations. So at the very least there could be three factions, with the Forerunners letting Spartan run with their imaginations for drone ships and what have you. That’s not even factoring in the concept of special fleet rulesets, like human colonial rebels, or the remaining loyal Covenant forces vs the Arbiters’ rebel forces.
… What? I like the Halo lore. *Hugs his novels close.*
Would you guys consider this for a boot camp weekend later in the year if it hits?
I do love the pictures. never played the game it did look good.
Im going to have to hide these from my son (aged 7) – he will ‘borrow’ any miniatures i get for his own battles, so ill have to get 2 sets!
I find it an interesting development that miniature games being developed from video games rather than the other way round which is more usual I think
Actually I find it encouraging that even after all these years my dreams of a Horace goes Skiing miniatures game is still a possibility
Frogger for me 😉
Hopefully the game gets Halo players to cross over to the tabletop. I don’t see much chance of it, but it would be great to get someone to start playing Halo TableTop and then intro Firestorm Armada or Dropfleet Commander
not interested in game, but if microsoft investing in models thats really big foot in to hobby.
There is no word of any investment. In fact, usually it’s the person using the license that has to pay for it.
The Flood. I want to play it. This must happen.
This calls for the proper musical accompaniment

The Chief just has to be available in model form at some point. Make it so, Spartan Games.
Simply…….Excellent!!
As soon as I buy both a FSA fleet and a Planetfall army, Spartan finds another way to vacuum money out of my wallet. Going to have to order a UNSC fleet.
Wow! I just can’t wait to see what sort of frivolous lawsuit GW brings over the use of the word “marine” in this game!
Praying this is 15mm…..
I wonder if this will be the start of a trend then if it’s successful? Perhaps we might see Bayonetta and Dante appear for Wyrd in Malifaux, Samus Aran from Metroid in Infinity, Parappa the Rappa in Super Dungeon Explore and Toejam & Earl in, errrrr…….
Don´t forget Earthworm Jim as a Unidron Batroid for Infinity! 😉
Lara Croft in Zombicide!
Some guys are going to loose their shit at the club over this. Their first thought though was “ah, just a space game”. Didnt hook them much. Now the idea of a ground based game does, a lot.
Dying to find out what scale they have in mind for it. Judging by form Id guess Epic scale.
Oh, gak me, this could get expensive.
This is such terrible news. I’ll have to tell the wife she’ll have a lot more to paint soon. 😛
Really, really interested in this. My Halo nerdgasm is being saturated with excellent stuff this year.
more on the halo game, this time from 343 industries ( the code monkees that made halo 4) https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/community/blog-posts/canon-fodder-in-the-loop
