Hobby Night Live: Planning & Building A Viking Tabletop [Livestream Over]
May 27, 2017 by brennon
We hope you joined us tonight as we were able to get stuck into the first stages of building our Viking Tabletop which is going to be inspired by Kattegat from the Vikings TV show.
We went through the planning stages of this project and asked you folks what you would like to see us work on as we bring the tabletop to life.
What's Happening?
We covered a few steps here tonight with your help...
- Planning
- Table Layout & Placement
- Sculpting Foam Terrain
...and this all feeds into us talking about making playable tables which also look great too. Hopefully, by the end of this project with the help you give us tonight we'll have a Viking table worthy of Ragnar and Lagertha.

One lucky person could also win themselves the utterly amazing Heorot's Great SAGA Hall by commenting and showing off their work during the evening.
Get sharing your work and you could be snapping up a code to get more hobby materials!
Will you be tuning in?

I will definitely be tuning in unless someone stops me from watching. really interested in seeing what sort of plans they guys are making.
Bah, going to miss this again. Ah well, will catch up on it over the weekend. Have fun chaps.
I’ll be around after work…. still deciding what to do……… 🙂
Argh, g*dd*mn moldy brains! Totally forgot about this but wanted to take it as the much needed kick to the lower regions to get my hobby juices flowing again.
Well, so this will have to be Hobby *Planning* Night Live for me, too. Sharpening pencils and collecting Realm Of Chaos, Necromunda and Inquisitor books right now…
Home from work! Let the hobby commence!
Enjoy it guys!
Looking forward to the stream. Will probably be painting some vikings as I am moving this weekend and most of everything is in boxes.. except for a small portable hobby station and some vikings for the occation
I see Gerry @avernos has managed to get in . You really must get that broken air vent fixed
I’m in the vents now. They’re never getting me out of here
My hobby for the next few weeks will be packing up all my hobby stuff to get the house ready to sell. 🙁 well actually 🙂 so hopefully I will get to watch a bit while packing.
Same here 🙂 Im more or less done packing and managed to sneak some plastic vikings and some paint out of a box aswell 🙂 hope you get some time to watch and good luck packing!
I keep looking at all these little dudes and keep thinking how dark it is inside the box. So much packing.
Once the library is packed and in storage then onto the games and minis. I have a little bit of an issue, just don’t want the lady of the house to actually see how much room all of it will take up. 🙂
Definitely interested in watching.
*eek* commenting yes, but work … *eh*
Let’s just say I need to find my inner zen before attempting to glue anything with superglue.
Contrast to plastic glue which is so flippin’ easy to use.
hmm … I’ve got a ton of plastic to glue. Might want to do that, but I’m bad at multi tasking so ….
I’m gonna try anyways.
Settled in with a nice cup of tea, and bits of cork, plastic and metal spread on my table.
Hello Beasts of War and the Hobby Night Live Community!
Today is a Public Holiday here in Germany and tomorrow I have a day off work – so I can enjoy this live hobby show in Real Time – yes!
Projects on the Hobby table:
Black Templars Predator using an Anarchy Models’ gun turret
TT Combat Warehouse
Imperial Defence Line Void Shield + LED lighting
Anyway, greetings from Berlin!
@beastsofwar what’s the plan for the boat keels? Or will it all list? #HobbyNightLive

Viking Village – The Vikings 1958
Use fabric for the sails and remove the crossbar for gaming
I have to put It out there. If you look at the real Kattegat. you will not see those kind of fjords. the real Kattegat is kind of flat. If you want the scenic fjords you have to go to northen Norway a quite a long way from Kattegat. By the way. I do not like that I have to have a twitch or facebook account to use the chat 🙁
Hopefully this hasn’t already been posted but you could use the terrain for a twist on GOT where the walkers/dead attack the Nights watch and the Wildlings as they are trying to escape in their boats. A kind of fantasy meets historical, the Vikings could take the place of the Nights watch a Lloyds wellies for the unread.
Apologies Lloyds Skellies not wellies
Having a mare here undead not the unread but who knows this could be the start of a new race
That’s a lot of fun!!!
When will the recorded stream be up ?
Is the playback video working?
Hi how’d it go? i
Intended to watch live last night, but weather and the message from mate at 6pm as got in of ‘In the pub’ derailed it.
Got mnext week of as pre Expo holiday so hopefully it will get me enthused to do some hobbying over the week.
Gutted I missed this, but was away with work so couldn’t be helped. On the bright side it does mean I have 4hrs of content and associated comments to read.
Since old age is catching up with me I can no longer focus properly for 2mm so have had to move up to 3mm instead. These larger scales I find are much easier to paint
3mm? Poser’s scale, mate…
For Dark age rules I would recommend Dux Bellorum by Osprey. But any of the multitude of ancient/mediveal rule sets will let you play Dark Age
Dux. I couldn’t bloody remember it and I have a copy at home. Probably old age creeping in.
A Viking based hobby night! I was stoked.
I was looking forward to blood n guts and mayhem.
Instead what do I find…..paper plate shield painting!
What a bunch of Jessies!
Next time will it be basket weaving and embroidery!
Bring back the real man’s hobby night! :p
Actually the next hobby night live will focus on manicures and petticures using hobby tools. Then John will be explaining how to airbrush tans while Lloyd goes into unusual padding using upholstery foam
Don’t forget the Romphim suits 😉
For cutting the beach, why not put @dignity ‘s joinery skills to use and make a quick long wooden frame, wrap a circuit of wire around it so that @warzan ‘s electrons can swim through.
Boom! Zing! you’ve got a bespoke hot wire knife that can cut whole sheets of foam at a time.
they actually have a massive hot wire cutter that would take the foam…. don’t know why they didn’t think of it, although not sure on the fumes it would release, also even flame retardant foam can still ignite to a certain extent before going out. Something to ponder though certainly
I remember that they have the big foam factory cutter setup. But I wasn’t sure that it could handle the whole sheet of foam at once in a convenient way.
The giant power sword foam cutter of doom, DOOM I say, would be able to sweep over a horizontal sheet of foam and cut out a beach slope in a single pass, without worrying about matching cuts from multiple passes from a smaller cutter.
no playback on the video is the catch up available somewhere else? am i missing something :/
It’s still on the facepage but I don’t think it’s been uploaded to the site yet.
Awesome ill head over there Cheers Avernos 🙂
apparently it’s running for me in this thread matey, hopefully the facepage one is working for you.
got it on the facepage but still nothng here, the twitch player apears but no playback Doh!
a shame on the other side of the world I miss it but watching Justin run like a girl on the play back is amusing already. Is there place to share what we are working on even if we aren’t on here live ?
The hobby night live community project thread on the forum is the place you need to go to mate.
Couldn’t watch live (West coast US) but for your question about shaping the foam, a hot wire knife is a much faster way to get your shapes than with a dremel. You can shape the wire to make the rough shape you are trying to make from the foam, then just draw it across level, and your foam will be your hill shape. Then you finish it off with the dremel.
Jerry may be a big beefy, nice guy, but he speaks so softly, you can’t make out what he’s saying! Perhaps, if he doesn’t like to raise his voice, then may be holding the mic a little closer. Take lessons from Warren, I have no problem hearing him!
They up me on the weekender mics but talking into hand held mics confuses me. You can see why I don’t work there ^^
A shot for every innuendo? Oh my. Oh my flippin my!
I’m just glad i don’t drink anymore, otherwise making it to work after a HNL would be problematic 😉 .
Or making it anywhere at all after a HNL.
Like the Withnail & I drinking game. It’s tantamount to alcohol poisoning
Finally some time to catch up on hobby night live, hopefully I can join next time 😀 3, 2, 1, Start!
Nice to catch up ^^ Glad to see you got my cat’s ass historical information :p
Really inspiring, guys
Awesome show guys, thankyou!
you always crack me up.
I’m watching you while I’m painting my Arcadia Quest “Army”.
Any tips on using the Quickshade on mini that are very bright in color? I often end up with a mini that is too dark so I have to spray some dull coat and then do some dry brushing to bring some good highlight.
Great show, I really hope to catch it live next month. Can’t wait to see how he table comes out.
Some friends and I built a 20mm scale WW1 table a couple of years ago for a local event complete with a trench system that too a few weeks to do from planning to finish and this has got me interested in doing another project
Try using a electronic beard trimmer to do the slope on the foam. Not used one myself to do this but might work
That’s a boatload of content (heheh) to get through. Been working on that on and off since Friday morning. All in one go on only the second try, congrats! I haven’t had any time to hobby since I’ve mainly been assembling shelves to better hold my hobby but these events sure get me in the mood to go for it either way.
Had a thought on the upholstery foam boards. Can you guys try putting some in a vacuum bag for storage? If it works without causing damage to the terrain piece, You’d be onto the ultimate terrain boards. Light, 3D, look great, extremely low storage area required.
hi folks – like your viking project – myself i start a borg cube project – maybe i will show same pictures next hobby night – ride on and greating from germany…
————————————-
We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.
some pictures …of course
Ancient Irish played their own board-games. When Cuchulain first came to the capital Emain Macha (Navan in Armagh) as a wee boy he chased the boy troupe from the playing field. They ran inside to seek the protection of the grown-up warriors and scattered their board-games.
The Ulster High Chief Connor was playing Fidchell on his board Cennchaem. One theory is that the board played out chariot battles. I think the later Viking games played out ambush/escape-encirclement skirmishes (?)

(no rulebook included so casting ‘Molten Flame’ is in doubt 🙂 )
Work stopped me from watching s unday night botthe of wine and pure pleasure. thx guys . Lloyd why cant you stnd foam up? @lloyd
RTV won’t work for the beach. The sand won’t stick to it, it’ll just fall out as soon as you flex the rubber. Some of those foam gym floor mats may do the job cut to an angle with a knife.
Really late to the game I know but to get the height from sea level to the deck level. Can you put one table on 1″ blocks lifting the table to a higher level and the same hieght as the decking walk ways. You would only need a little foam to meet the edge of the high table and drop down to the sea. It would save alot of foam/ wood. Great show can’t wait until the next one.
