@dignity, I love reign of fire as well. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Everyone
I loved me Reign of Fire. They had Dragons. Hobbit only had a big, albeit well done, “wyvern.” Just sayin.
What??? You got one chance to redeem yourselves — go read the book before the third movie comes out.
i already did 🙂
Things what am I looking forward to in 2014. I already play a lot of different minis-games and boardgames and that’ll not change. I’m anticipating Jean Bey and Hanakai Studio’s launch of whatever their game is. I know it’ll involve minis, I think it might involve a computer game too. I think I’ll finally get Relic Knights sometime around March and I can see that hitting our gaming table quite a lot. I plan on GM-ing an ambitious Batman multi-player narrative scenario once the Battle Systems terrain shows up. I’ll be making my first ever trip to GenCon come August. Very much looking forward to that. It’ll likely impact my ability to make other shows this year, including Salute (which reminds me, the theme is the 70th anniversary of D-Day). I’ll likely make several trips to Nottingham, and will kick off my year by heading down on Jan 4th. I’ve got several painting projects lined up. I’ve started on my latest God of Battles army as of yesterday, I’ve got the Batman minis to do, and a 28mm Mid-Republican Roman army from Aventine are the next priorities. I’ll have the War & Empire minis coming so I’ll be returning to 15mm after a break of a few years. All in all I’ve got quite a lot to look forward to.
I’ve read The Hobbit and didn’t think that impacted my views on the movie. My Mrs bailed after the first and let me know in no uncertain terms I’d be seeing this one without her. I was born in ’75 and grew up with Star Wars. Loved the movies until I discovered things like 2000AD, Blade Runner, William Gibson, and even Rogue Trader, after which Star Wars didn’t seem like all that anymore. I went to see The Phantom Menace and hated it so much I’ve never seen the last two movies.
Merry Christmas to one and all.
Happy hollidays, Loyd, Justin, Warren, Sam, Brennon and all fellow members of BoW.
Enjoy your 2 weeks off fellas; you’ve earned it. Merry Chrimbo!
Well I liked Reign of Fire too.
Of course, how to train your dragon is the best dragon movie ever, but still.
Next year is deadzone year for me, with some infinity thrown in, I have the deadzone box now although all I’ve done is read the rules a bit, but I do love the big plague mini.
Infinity is my favourite wargame I think, (deadzone is kind of a halfway house between boardgame and wargame really), indeed, this last year has seen me get less and less interested in 40K, and that isnt because of what they did regarding BoW or whatever, I just don’t really like the art direction they are going in,Dark Angels Terminators, Vanguard Veterans and the new Tactical squad box aside the models have just not been doing it for me at all, the fluff is getting sillier and the rules have got worse as the year went on with the various releases topped off by the dlc route for the christmas period.
I may not even bother with the 6th version of my beloved Blood Angels if it comes out I’ve been so disillusioned with the way the game is going, and I have models from the second edition starter set in that army (bought new in GW Birmingham when it was the only place you could get it) I’ve been collecting them so long.
Infinity excites me, the models and the rules, its enjoyable to play, the hobby side is great as the models are just so interesting to paint, I look forward to playing it as I used to look forward to playing 40K.
I think Warren has it spot on with the Star Wars films. I was in the supermarket and from behind me at the tills I heard a small kid shout ‘Look mummy i’m using the force!’ As I turned round he was waving his hands as items moved along the conveyor belt. How cool is that kid!? 🙂 But his entire outfit was covered in stuff from Attack of the Clones. I guess it just depends at what point in your life you come to the films. I will always be an original trilogy man 🙂
Awesome show guys, hope you have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Shame on you, the Hobbit and LoTR amd the other tolkien stuff were the things that got me into the whole fantasy thing in the first place, not an uncoomon story I know. They remain some of my favourite books. I even got a Hobbit pop up book for my daughter when she was really little. It summarised the story in a few key scenes and like sll good pop up books had parts that move and animate by sliding things etc. It became one of her favourite bed time stories and rhe same for my son. A bit like becoming an Arsenal supporter they didnt get mich choice!
I thought Reign of Fire was ok. At Euro Disney a while back the set near the underground station formed part of one of the attractions and that was quite cool with all the fire coming out. Next year is going to be Infinity, Dreadball, KoW and more board games/card games for me. A combination of Geek and Sundries Tabletop and BoW have helped highlight a number of things to get all the family involved in and some perhaps not e.g. Cards Against Humanity 🙂
Have a good one guys and and all the best to your families, look forward to more BoW goodness in the New Year
The Final Countdown is epic awesome CHEESE from 1980 with Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen. Brilliant Sunday afternoon watching.
I’m anticipating the Plastic Enforcers for Deadzone from Mantic and the Forge Father + Asterian Factions too,
Happy festive period all at BoW, weather you are part of the team or part of the community. Also, thanks for a great 2013 guys. 🙂
2014s must haves
Wild West Exodus
Robotech RPG
Flames of War
Bolt Action
Infinity
Deadzone
Dreadball
Twilight imperiam
God of Battles army
Malifaux
Dystopian Legions
Firestorm Armarda
Warmahordes
Really looking forward to seeing the film Ronin and couldnt agree more with Warren about the LotR. Watched the DVD extended addition at least 20 times now and almost know all the words, lol. Anyone else wT h Hobbit 2 in 3D? If not you HAVE to go and watch it again as it is pretty much all saturaged in 3Dness which really sucks you into the film. The Bombur in a barrel was best, especially when fighting with the 2 axes wearing the barrel as armour, lol.
Have a great Christmas and New Year guys. Thanks for all your hard work and sticking with it, even when things looked bleak.
See you next year, it should be a good one.
Is anyone haveing a problem watching the xlbs ? Ive tried watching it on a cuple of devices now and no joy.
I had issues earlier. Right Clicked the video and increased the local storage in the flash settings.
That seemed to settle things down for me, but it may have been something else.
Cheers Warren, I got it sorted. Happy hols.
Can I ask How I have had this recent issue of the Backstage videos spiking the browser CPU usage to 100% and I have not been able to get rid of the issue.
I’m not sure what is causing that, we could do a screen share and a skype chat and I’ll see if I can get to the bottom of it for you though, if that helps?
Warzan that probably won’t work as it is a work laptop, Thank you for the offer, and I have a Quad Core 2.6 GHz that only spikes to 45% usage compared to the Dual core work laptop.
Reign of Fire was much better than Dragonheart… Scenario, effects, tone, everything. Period.
Van Zant!
He’s so cool that Corvus Belli put him in the Infinity universe.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone at BoW. May you all have a fabulous 2014. Thank you for getting me back into the hobby.
P.S. If Wulfen is good enough for a German basketball team (not to mention a few towns), it should be good enough for Warren’s Stugs. 😉
Nice video guys. I especially liked the way the first half hour was a rant then there was that small talk about board games. 🙂 Merry christmas
A very hobby new year to everyone! May 2014 be filled with gaming goodness!
When you said “best dragon movie” I immediately thought if Reign of Fire. So it’s better than a Warren and Lloyd make out. But that’s not saying much.
Stupid iOS typing. It’s 2013, damnit! I expect more from my technology.
Merry Christmas guys and a happy new year. Really excited for 2014 and BoW. Hope to see you guys at some events, I have some pints with your names on them.
Bst wishes, may your women be of loose morals and your enemies be driven before you.
And Justin…Reign of Fire kicks bum!
That’s kicks bum, not licks bum. Loose the PlopTrops.
Games for 2014, more Mercs, Prodos’ Aliens verus Predator game, and finally Deadzone!
In regards to the new robotics, is this where I can say ” The Cylons are coming” or will it be more along the lines of the synthes/skinjobs from BladeRunner, or even the synthetics from Alien/Aliens……(just watch out for the A2’s, I think they might be a bit twitchy)
And I’ll back Ming the Lack of Facial Hair (aka Justin) that Reign of Fire was a very good dragon movie, in that it got the breathing fire looking extremely realistic, how the creature moved was believable.
Ming the Beardless?
My prediction for 2014 is that by the end of it a lot of us will have far better gaming tables and terrain than we ever had before. The amount of cool stuff being produced every month is incredible.
For myself I’d like an excuse to game Samurai so I would really like a good set of rules.
If we do create cylons I can’t wait for my number 6.
Everyone wan’t number 6. You kind of have to feel sorry for number 2 though. 🙂
I thought Desolation of Smaug was a bit bleh, – it was ok, better than the first one, certainly. But still, I wouldn’t exactly call it good, though maybe people with kids see it in a different light. – After all, The Hobbit novel was a childrens book.
In saying that, I found some parts enjoyable enough. I thought the addition of Tauriel was actually quite good (The Hobbit novel had a problem of there not being a single female character in the whole book I think) plus, if what I think is going to happen, happens in the 3rd film then there’s nothing for a Tolkien purist to be upset about…
I did enjoy much of the Smaug section, especially with him toying with Bilbo (although the whole half molten statue thing doesn’t really make much sense…) though.
There were terrible parts though…. The spider section at the beginning, the whole barrel escape sequence I found cringeworthy (people compared it to the Monkey scene in Crystal Skull) and my biggest personal issue was Laketown.
Though there were a few attempts at doing good stuff with Bard (giving the fish away, the Black Arrow), so much of it was just like the worst episode of Blackadder ever made, including Melchett plus a character who played exactly like the unholy child of Blackadder and Baldrick. – The whole spying sequence (someone down the toilet, really?) was just awful.
I hate to say it, but I’m with you Justin, Reign of Fire was pretty awesome. Skydiving with dragons? It wasn’t a perfect move for sure but it was fun and I liked seeing dragons on screen and the characters have something other than swords and chain mail.
So when do you guys think I can order my own Persocon?
I wish all you BOW folks a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year! I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the Weekender and XLBS throughout 2013 and can’t wait to see what you guys have in store for the upcoming year.
As for you lack of book reading–guys that made me cringe. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE books and will often take reading a book over watching TV or a movie. Sadly, I am having big issues with Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, especially Desolation. It just should not be three movies–too much PJ creation for me to accept or embrace.
I love reading too, with a couple of caveates 🙂
1) I’m not a huge fan of Tolkien unfortunately, I find the writing style a bit dry and mundane (even though I’m a huge fan of the ‘world’ he invented)
2) Beasts of War and Babies, managed to kill my reading, these days I cannot read even a single page without falling asleep 🙁
Re: 1). I get that. I read The Hobbit when I was 10, and The Lord of the Rings when I was 12 and then again when I was 15, but I couldn’t read either book again. Tolkien is not a particularly good writer and as LotR goes on his style gets even more ponderous. I can still read The Silmarillion as the format of the book bypasses the problem of narrative style and gives the reader direct access to his phenomenal world.
TL:DR? As a prose writer, Tolkien was a great philologist.
What is wrong with XLBS. The last 2 weeks I have not been able to watch XLBS because i get a green screen. This time it happened at 5:20 approx.
Best wishes to you guys in N Ireland. I am jealous of your gaming club already. Thank you for getting me back into the gaming hobby and excited about new products.
2014 for me will be me finally getting an airbrush and painting up my Flames of War army and taking part in the next FoW tournament. Also I will be placing an order for my Infinity gubbin’s next week. Really excited to get into that.
Played Gloom tonight with family friends. It was a fun change from the norm.My poor dog suffered from sores and was disgraced at a dance before finally choking on a bone.
Warren, you seem really worked up about the fact no one lives on Mars!
What would be the point? It would just be incredibly dull. No aliens, no jet packs, no starships. It would just be life inside a sealed living area for weeks on end. In fact, it would essentially be Big Brother! Big Brother in space.
“Big Brother! Big Brother in space.”
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Or as one of the team has kindly pointed out to me… a months long episode of the weekender!!!
GIT 😉
Heh heh. BoW Big Brother. That’s a show right there.
Or, I’m a Gamer, Get Me Out of Here!
Contestants could be forced to play Plop Trumps!
Just wanted to wish all the BoW Team a Merry Christmas and and a Happy New Year.
Im prolly in the minority but I liked Reign of Fire as well.
Liked Reign of Fire, Liked short Circuit.
Next the drons are going to fail (in the US) because Apartments, Townhouse, and Homeowner associations that require two oak or pine trees planted in you front yard (bastards won’t let me get solar panels).
OMG WARREN! HOW COULD YOU PRONOUNCE SILMARILLION WRONG?
Seriously though, great show 🙂
Thanks for a fantastic 2013. This year I discovered BoW, got my war gaming hobby rekindled by watching you guys, discovered the expanded world of board gaming from watching On the Table, became a Backstager and backed my first Kickstarters (Shadows of Brimstone and Battle Systems). Everything is packed in boxes because I’m about to move early next year and, having finished watching XLBS just now, I can’t wait unpacking it all as soon as I’m settled in. At my new job, I discovered some guys that want to get into Infinity and one that’s been a long time Warmachine player. A Blood Bowl league is about to start and we’re talking about board game nights. 2014 might become my personal gaming revival and that is in no small part also thanks to BoW. Cheers to all of you and looking forward to seeing you again in the New Year. Best of luck with the new studio in Ireland.
Reign of Fire wasn’t a good movie. It was a fun Movie. Turn off your brain 80’s style action films in the modern(ish) age because people don’t like firing from the hip and long drawn out car chases as much anymore. Kinda on the same level as the Underworld movies. I love them but they aren’t thought provoking or making me question/think about the world around me.
The new star wars movies were great for children. They come out in my mid childhood. I really enjoyed em in theaters. And actually didn’t mind jar jar until I grew older. The originals were great in your childhood because they inspired imagination and the black and white good vs evil fight. The prequels did the same for me anyways.
See you all in the new year 🙂
Reign of fire was one of the best intros I’ve seen but once the dragon was disturbed and they jumped forward bah humbug the film was awful after that lol ;0)
