More Flames Of War Tanks Roll Out For Barbarossa
October 23, 2014 by brennon
In the struggle between the Soviets and the German Axis forces for Barbarossa you're going to need some more tanks for the battlefield. Well thankfully Flames of War have updated and released a few for you to choose from. See what you think of the KV-1, KV-2, KV-1e and ZIS-30...
Some rather deadly looking tanks for you to consider adding to your Soviet armies on the frontier. The one that I'm really interested in is the last one, the ZIS-30. The ZIS was a big and brutal anti-tank gun that could punch through pretty much any kind of armour the Germans could field at the time. It seems like they're going to need it.
Will you be picking up any of these?

FoW are not doing themselves any favours by including the Gumby crew commander on most of the vehicles. Looks like he has already ran afoul of some German tank treads.
Are those fist-sized rivets on the turret of the KV-1e accurate?
Tanks themselves are very good but those crew commanders are just bad.
Actually, yes, @cpauls1 , the KV-1E had those enormous rivets.
I actually wish FoW had these out earlier this year when I was building up my 1941 Soviet force. The KV-1s I bought from FoW were out of stock, then Battlefront dropped the ball when I tried to cancel the order (I bought from Zvezda miniatures instead), then when the Battlefront KV-1s did arrive, the running boards were broken and I had to build my own with cardboard. Meanwhile, I had bought the KV-1s from Zvezda, received them, assembled and painted them, and engaged them in two battles before my Battlefront KV-1s even arrived, even though I had cancelled the order. Needless to say, I wasn’t very happy with Battlefront at the time (they have since redeemed themselves). 🙂
You certainly can’t fault the FoW minis for detail on the tanks. My Zvezda KV-1s had to have a lot of the detail scratch-added myself, with mixed results. 🙁 I tried to add those rivets with tiny drops of superglue gel before painting, which actually looked great . . . until the dried, flattened, and cracked. Now the tank looks like it has open sores or something.
the ZIS-30 is a curious addition. Only a few of these were ever built, although that repurposed 57mm AA gun could probably open a Pz II, III, or Pz-38(t) . . . even as it flipped itself over from recoil. 🙂 Not sure about a Pz IV, it might depend on the range. And of course I have no idea how FoW handles them in the game.
Aha the Russians are coming I do prefer the T34.
I like the up-armoured KV-1. Very mean looking
