I think the old guard understand the background better than CGL do and are capable of either creating extensions on their own (thus zero potential profit for CGL) .

Picking an alternate setting (especially one that’s more focused on the fantastic elements) might be just the thing to get non-Battletech players into the system.

However as fictional backgrounds are tricky to sell under the best of circumstances I doubt it will be that easy, unless there’s some big new thing coming ‘soon’.
