Alt history ?
I’d like a more ‘realistic’ (ha!) variant of the ‘what if magic was real during medieval period’.
Fantasy settings seem to think that society won’t change and that period will last forever …
Steampunk is an alternate history of sorts that asks the question ‘what if steam was efficient and some of the wacky theories of that era were true’. And it makes the same mistake as fantasy: nothing changes as mankind seems to have an eternal victoriana period.
Twilight 2000 was a nice alternate history, but there was no ‘end goal’. The setting tends to focus on the chaotic period after things go to hell. There isn’t any real answer to ‘what happens afterwards’.
Konflikt ’47 kind of has the same issue. Will it evolve and really move the timeline forward ?
Or will there be an eternal status quo like in 40k where technology never changes, unless marketing demands it …
OTOH … it’s the period immediately after the ‘what if’ that is the most interesting. Let the time move forwards and it might as well be a fictional setting.
Finished watching ‘Invincible’ season 1 … it’s an interesting ‘super hero’ show.
This is kind of ‘what if : superheroes weren’t perfectly black&white morally and their heroics had consequences …
And something cyberpunky
