Some friends gave played a lot for Midgard than me changed the rule about heroes charging into combat and gaining reputation when using it for historical armies
June 2, 2025 at 7:52 am #1931420That’s my favourite part of rules: they’re mostly suggestions. Aren’t they?
June 3, 2025 at 7:14 am #1931504The only problem I have with Warmaster is the basing system for cavarly and chariots, otherwise it is a great game and can be used for historical and fantasy genres. Having said that, Warmaster is rarely used anymore for the historical side of the hobby.
I personally am a fan of Fantastic Battles. It used a 40mm base system that is ideal for 10mm and can be used for historical and fantasy genres interchangeably. It has several pre-constructed armies, but it allows you to build any army you want, with any figure range you want with far more diversity than Midgard.
Midgard is great and fun, mind you, I have played with it with my 15mm fantasy armies. The mechanics are very fluid and easy going, but it lacks the versatility of Fantastic Battles.
Impetus and Impetus Fantasy supplement are also very good. I play Impetus quite a lot with my 1/72 Romans and Celts and I enjoy using the system with my 15mm fantasy armies as well.
Another option is Sword & Spear and Sword & Spear Fantasy. This is a bit of a mixed bag, and not my people like it, but I do – especially the activation dice mechaninc. They are inexpensive and if I was you I’d get them just for your collection and reference.
June 3, 2025 at 11:33 am #1931539Fantastic Battles does also look very interesting. I think I’ll get both Midgard and Fantastic Battles and see what I like more.
June 3, 2025 at 12:42 pm #1931545Sword and Spears is good and loved the C&C system but remember skirmishers being overly piwerful
June 3, 2025 at 12:52 pm #1931546Great choice @amachan
Just to make sure you turn every rock, there is a free system called For Reign & Ruin, that you can download. It is a very detailed (some might say overly detailed) system for fantasy and historical battles. I have never played it, but I am currently reading through it. I don’t think it is for me, but I know people who love this intricate style.
If you are going for 40mm bases, then you should also check out Fantasy Rules! You can buy the 2nd edition pdf online, or find the community 3rd edition online. This was the basis for Age of Hannibal by Little Wars TV. I have played it and it is good.
Let us know what settle for in the end. I am curious.
June 3, 2025 at 1:12 pm #1931556At the moment I am thinking of using Warmaster’s basing system with 40x20mm bases. 2 of those will make a 40mm square for any games that want that. I think this will give me the best versatility for different games. I will put characters on 15mm or 25mm rounds depending on what fits best for the model or models I want to put on. And for the game, I am still leaning towards Midgard, but will be getting the Fantastic Battles book as well as I currently have no insight of how Fantastic Battles is (watching the OTT let’s play at the moment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV3G7H6I1Qw). I really like the heroic character system they use in Midgard, it is very much like how stories and legends were told back in the day. That is for 10mm at least.
I am also still thinking of doing it in 28mm. It will get that heroicness across a bit more than 10mm, while 10mm will get the large battles across more. I also have a ton of scenery and models already for 28mm, making that a bit easier to get in to. The same goes for the friends I am going to play with, they have 28mm-ish stuff not 10mm stuff. In 28mm I am going to use the Kings of War single basing system, so infantry on 20mm squares and cav on 25x50mm. And then movement trays for the frontages of each game. I also have my fantasy army that I am already working on that will be a perfect secondary force next to the new Hellenistic one to introduce people to these games.
I am hoping to make a decision by the end of the week which scale I am going with in the end.
June 4, 2025 at 11:41 am #1931757Another question.
For 10mm should I go with Warmaster basing? Everything on 40x20mm with the cavalry and pikes facing the short edge. Or do I just go with 40mm squares for everything? Most likely going to play either Midgard or Fantastic Battles.
June 4, 2025 at 12:36 pm #1931758In Warmaster, all units are composed of 3 bases (4cm x2cm), with two strips on each base. Except for monsters, chariots and artillery that have one model on each base. Note that certain monster units (like giants) are made out of one base only.
For other systems, just use 2 bases that will make up 40mmx40mm – and you’re fine.

June 4, 2025 at 12:47 pm #1931761The question is do you want to play Warmaster? I personally am not interested in playing Warmaster. With 10mm, I just go with 40mmx40mm. When I want to play games like Impetus, To the Stronghold, and Sword and Spear – I just add two bases together.
My 15mm armies are all based on 80mmx40mm (to 60mm).

June 4, 2025 at 1:19 pm #1931766That is the question, do I want to play Warmaster. Most likely not now that I have learned of games like Midgard and Fantastic Battles. The advantage of Warmaster basing is that I can play Warmaster and 2 bases make a 40mm square any way.
June 4, 2025 at 1:25 pm #1931770Also note, before you make a decision, that on a 40mmx20mm Warmaster base one normally places two strips of miniatures. On a 40mmx40mm, I only place 3 strips and it looks fine. For horde like creatures I place 4 strips to simulate multitude. Monsters, artillery and chariots also look and fit better on a 40mmx40mm base rather than a 40mmx20mm base. Just my 2c.
