Important News Regarding 1p and 2p Basing!!!!

Keep an eye on the news this week if you are in the UK regarding the future of 1p and 2p coins.  There is a chance they will be scrapped and our lowest domination coin with be the 5p, which is too small for basing.

The BBC article notes that

That Treasury consultation document said surveys suggested six-in-10 of UK 1p and 2p coins were only used once before being put in a jar or discarded, while one-in-12 were thrown into a bin.

Very disappointed that they don’t mention that wargamers also use them for basing as their monetary value is lower than the price of plastic or MDF bases.

My first thought when I read the article was @warzan and @lloyd and the High Elf army 🙂  I’ve based a lot of 20mm WW2 soldiers on 1p and 2ps and plan on using 2ps more for the basing of trees and small scenery pieces!

Of course we will have plenty of time to save them up if the government does decide to withdraw them from circulation.

1p and 2p coins are useless as currency.   If they do go out of circulation I’d be hoarding them from my friends.  As it stands I probably still have enough to last me years hidden in random bags and drawers around the house!

I’ve always wondered whether defacing Her Majesty’s currency is illegal.

@hobbyhub I’m unsure whether it is, so I always have the Queen’s head at the bottom rather than sticking the model on it.  At least I can say to the judge, “well at least old Lizzy is not defaced, M’Lord!”

The Royal Mint website states

Under Section 10 of the 1971 Coinage Act – No person shall, except under the authority of a licence granted by the Treasury, melt down or break up any metal coin which is for the time being current in the United Kingdom or which, having been current, has at any time after 16th May 1969 ceased to be so.

Technically I am not melting them or breaking them up so it should be fine.  There is probably some law from 1441 that makes it illegal to cover the King’s head and punishable with a night in the stocks though!

More to do with coin clipping and melting down to make coins of another value. Coin clipping stopped being a problem when they phased out gold and silver coins.

Eh I wouldn’t worry too much about a Parliamentary Run Government coming after your for putting glue on an engraving of a monarchs head.

Anyone who ever has any issue over it should just respond with

That ensures a steady supply for my basing needs for years to come, but the sooner we get rid of them as currency the better!
