Bernard Cribbins passed away recently and YouTube,, for whatever reason, decided to put into my recommendations part one of a ten part adaption of The Hobbit that appeared in Jackanory on BBC One from 1st October 1979.

Bernard played Bilbo, with the other players being Jan Francis, Maurice Denham, and David Wood.

This might interest a certain @brennon

This does indeed bring back memories, though for some reason of the group I best recall David Wood, I think he did one of the bad guys or maybe as one of the Trolls or was he Gollum?

    Thanks for posting this @hobbyhub

I have several versions of ‘the Hobbit’ but not this one!

I do believe I might have a crush on the narrator Jan Francis.  (unless I’ve mucked it up and associated the wrong name with the lady narrator)

Dang — I only knew him through his 1969 Cribbins television show when it played in the USA. Unfortunately, it was during my Monty Python days, so I didn’t really follow him. Anyway, search on “Cribbins 1969” and “Cribbins Dr. Who” for some of his other BBC roles!

I have been watching this over the past two days. Really well done and love him as Bilbo – cheers @hobbyhub
