So i have just completed the 4 Space Captain Smith books
think Steam Scfif Punk , and the crew in the books are so ridicules that they would make an excellent ship crew.
Captain Smith = promoted to incompetence runs around with sword and hand cannon for the good of the new British Empire
Polly = Sex bot turned to Pilot , loves to get drunk and doesn’t like getting into scrapes
Alien Warrior friend of Smith = no bum cannot sit , think mix of Klingon and predator , runs around with a big spear and likes cutting the heads off enemies
Love interest of Smith = Hippy New Californian ( loves hemp including eadables ) is a psychic and always wants to make peace not war
Derk = Pollsy love interest , think Harason ford in Blade Runner , always trys his hardest to repulse pollys advances but they always manage to end up togeather ( wink wink nudge nudge)
M = head of Space MI6 always appears out of inanimate object best one in the 4 books has to be popping out of a tea urn
very intelligent but pretty usless as a crew member
the books are a fun adventure in space , very well written by Toby Frost , takes all Stereotypes to 11 and makes it hilarious
the French , Americans , British, Indians, aliens are all Stereotyped and the characters are well written,
i will start creating the crew and i will post pics as i go
really recommend the books
interesting I’ve never heard of them but I may check it out. Last Sci-fi comedy I read was Phule’s Company series by Robert Asprin it was a good laugh.
Will you be using them for gaming, or just looking to model the crew for your own satisfaction?
Both to be hounest
star grave and can re space lend themselves quite well for this
I’ll be giving these a look see. A good comedy is always welcome.
Been trying to find some comic books from my youth (back in the 70s), all I remember was they they came in the A5 Commando/War format (colour covers and black and white artwork), were British (a bit like the original Dan Dare but different). All I can remember is them taking off in a 50s style rocket ship to a colony world only to find it deserted…until night falls. And then you guessed it the whole planet is now full of Vampires desperate to hi jack the hero’s ship and make it back to earth. The original publishing date I would guess back in the 60s as a Dan Dare knock off (but I’ve no idea as too the hero’s name, it was all very “Biggles in SPAAACCCEEE”). Might have been an edition of Starblazer (I know I had some of those as a kid second hand of the local Market Stall that sold stacks of those A5 comic books (to Kids and Squaddies alike) but I think it dated back to much earlier than that (the artwork was more like the stuff you saw in the early Eagle comic), any ideas from the elder ones in the forum?
No, something a lot earlier than that (Planet of Vampires was more like the US/Marvel comics of the time). This was in a thicker book than the usual Commando/War comics (a bit like the annuals they did) and had 2 or 3 stories in it. It’s driven me mad for years now, the hours wasted trying to find it via google (sigh). But one day, one day, someone out there will know what I’m wittering on about 😀
