    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is The Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

If you fancy to see some nice WIP pictures go to the WAYPN thread https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-painting-now-2025-edition/

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Question of the week:

    • Who is your favourite artist or painter or sculptor in the realms of our hobby?

And now back to the show.

Pledge: Build a tower! Clean the bloody room!

Answer: Torn on this one. I love Kevin Adams and his tiny green lads but Werner Klocke also has made some really nice stuff. And to be brutally honest: my brain is so bad at remembering names that I wouldn’t remember any other names anyhow.

This week’s pledge is to start painting the cycle five primordials for Aeon Trespass: Odyssey, and I need to source my city themed mini for this month’s painting competition.

I just finished the cycle four titans: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1912086/

Who is your favourite artist or painter or sculptor in the realms of our hobby? – I have to be honest I tend not to pay any attention to artists, painters or sculptors. I may look at something and think it’s cool but I won’t notice the person’s name, or I’ll forget it.

My planned 1:1 terrain is almost done.
Top tip: when assembling a Billy bookcase it is best to put the unit on its head when it is time to place the backplane. Gravity makes your live much easier when trying to assemble these  things on your own.
Only thing left are the doors. And of course I had to pick the variant that is a real pain in the posterior (Hogbo).

    Artists you say ?
For ‘classic’ art I’d pick these 3:
    – Larry Elmore ( https://larryelmore.com ) ; if you’ve seen (classic) D&D you’re probably familliar with his work

    – Boris Vallejo / Frank Frazetta; Both (in)famous for a lot of the art for Conan. Sword & Sorcery as it should be.

    – Simon Stålenhag (https://simonstalenhag.se/ ) : there is something really cool about the way he matches 70’s-80’s visuals with Sci Fi elements.

There’s probably more out there, but I wouldn’t know their names unless I happen to have seen their art and name side by side. I wouldn’t be surprised if more than a few ‘lesser’ artists don’t get recognised because their art matches that of one of the big names in the industry.

    Pledge of the week… do some hobby… something… anything…

My favourite artist is not strictly in the hobby, but I find his art inspires NPC’s in games so I count it… Gil Elvgren.

In the hobby it would be Clyde Caudwell and Larry Elmore for all those amazing Dragon and Dungeon covers, plus the modules that they illustrated.

If we are delving into comic book related art then Greg Horn and Frank Cho.

Pledge: Get started on my PaintComp entry for this month.
Answer: Artist has to be Adrian Smith. So many projects he has worked on that I love and I’m lucky to have some of his original work too. Angus McBride is a close second for his wonderful historical stuff and his vision of Lord of the Rings. His vision of orcs are perfect in my eyes.
Sculptor: Mark Copplestone. Such evocative sculpts that are an absolute joy to paint.
Miniature Painter: Kevin Dallimore and Steve Dean have a bright, high contrast style that works so well on the table and in photos.

Favourite sculptor? That’s a tough one.
For many years I loved what Andrea Tarabella was doing at Artisan Guild. I still think he’s a fantastic sculptor, even if in recent months his choice of subject hasn’t quite been up my street. His minis are brilliantly proportioned, great fun to paint and have just the right amount of detail.

Speaking of which, Jonathan Llinares of Vae Victis is another sculptor who produces minis that are just a delight to paint – not too much detail, but enough to fill the minis with character.

Sci-fi and cyberpunk is very much my genre, so it’s a bit weird that my favourite sculptors are fantasy-based.
The early Cyber Forge stuff was top notch but they’ve not really produced anything that excited me for a while now.

Christine Van Patten of Moonlight Minis is another sculptor that’s been knocking it out of the park with a range of mostly female-focussed characters (my wife loves this range, and, like the other two mentioned above, they’re always a joy to paint up).

Looking through all of these, there’s definitely a theme – slightly “old-school’ slightly cartoon-y, plenty-of-details-but-not-too-much and I find all of them really enjoyable to paint. Base coat, shade, highlight. I think maybe because they have slightly cartoon-y features, the heads are a bit bigger, making it possible (not necessarily easy) to paint the eyes (because we’re all painting the eyes on our minis, aren’t we? Aren’t we?)

    Pledge?
Well I picked “city” for the painting competition because I thought it would create a running joke.
I’m really regretting that, right now! Tough subject. I have a few ideas but I’m still not 100% sure on them. So my pledge is to at least get started on this month’s painting competition.

    Music?
    Yee-haw! I went to a honky-tonk US-themed bar on Monday, called Rodeos.
They had saloon doors and a mechanical bull, and lots of people were wearing stetons. At the open mic every was playing country music. I think it was one of the better open mics I’ve been to in a long time. I got a few people up on stage to form an impromptu band and we played this one.

Those doors have got to be one of the few Ikea things that are an absolute female dog to assemble.
Or rather. Usually there’s pre-drilled holes that allows things to slot in with zero effort, but not this time.
Oh no, and to make matters worse the hinges go on some kind of rail on the inside of the door. It took ages to get the things on.
And of course once mounted the doors didn’t close properly until I finally managed to twist the one magic screw to the right position.

Two more doors to go 🙂
    — edit —
Got the doors done. These were a tiny bit easier to do, but not by much. Had to use a pair of pliers to get the hinges correctly opened in order to place them. So glad this is done now 🙂

Pledge: I’m going motorcycle tripping this next week, no hobby. Five days in Banff area. No hotels, all camping.

Art: way too many to choose from! Early days it would be the D&D artists; then it was the first Warhammer artists; today I still like the era of Rogue Trader through perhaps 3rd edition 40k as my inspiration.

    No music today.

There’s nothing in the world that could make camping fun for me. Or rather I doubt there is.
I’d need a bit more comfort and shelter than a tent.

All this based on the times we as kids had to go camping with family who owned a caravan. That’s just about survivable for kids, because back then there were no fancy computers either (and it was when the weather was nice). It’s getting close to winter now so weather is going to suck for being outside soon(ish).

    @grantinvanman – I love this!
Hobby? Nah. You’re not getting any.
    Pledge? Nah.
    Choose an artist? Nah.
    Music? Guess what…. nah.
See you all in five days.

You’re like a cat amongst a pack of dogs!

@danlee – I can see what looks like Speed Paint/Contrast doing a lot of work but then every now and again there’s an area that looks super opaque. Are you mixing techniques? How long does a mini (of the type you’ve posted) typically take? I’m trying to find ways of speeding up my painting but whether I go speed paint over zenith (my favoured method and “most fun way to paint”) or base, wash, highlight, I always seem to take ages, per model.

@blinky465 on those minis I used abaddon black (a citadel base colour) for the tar and rhinox hide (another citadel base colour) for the base rims. Everything else was a citadel contrast paint. Those five models (roughly 32mm human sized) took between three to four hours, split over about four painting sessions.

Pledge: rewrite rules with latest updates, finalise poses for my second goblin faction.

Favourite sculptor isn’t going to surprise anyone. Kev adams of course! The Perry’s and Aly Morrison are close though.
