Thinking about needing some chaos, here I offer some more. There’s even a documentary for highbrow analysis and cultural enrichment.

So a serious thought here. Is there too much choice for what we have? I know Gerry is in his own conundrum as a presenter to not be able to play all that he wants all the time and relies on Páùl for entertainment. The rest of the crew can be sorted into being part of the GW fan base (for reason of market saturation) with nudges of expansion into other wargames due to the job. Do we have our niche for particular games that we actually play or is our Hoard of Grey just transferring to be shelved and unused? Display models are one thing but play pieces are another.

This all got sparked by a video I link to

Oh noes! Haven’t if put a ban on those as well? Dang it!

Is there too much choice for what we have?

Yes. Plain and simple. Is that a good thing? For the players yes. For the ones who try to make a living from it no! Will watch video later.

It’s Thursday, 6:30am and I really need my coffee now.

There is a LOT of choice. Too much? Nah. You buy what you like or what is playable locally? That’s how I roll.

40k is bread and butter locally. All my commissions are 40K. Love it, hate it, I don’t care. I also have a LOT of 40K mostly due to nostalgia.

But… nostalgia drives my other purchases. He-Man. Ninja Turtles. Historicals.

Will I ever get through my mountain? Maybe.

This is the last year for commission painting for me. I have two large projects and decided I’m done. I had a life-altering event which economically means I don’t need hobby money anymore. Now I can do what I want, in about 9 months when my commissions are done.

So you either won the lottery, sold stock with a lot of profit or inherited some wealth. Not having to worry about bills is the best thing ever.

@sundancer I sold my soul – PM sent. And now I will be paid for that time.

If I would do that I think I would have to pay for someone to take it XD

    Too much ?

    Not at all.

I’d even argue that we have too few options that are realisticwhen we want to play against humans on a local level.

For most of us that means that we have a choice between playing a GW game or nothing at all.

Too few are willing to break that cycle, because doing so requires an investment in time and brain power.
It requires finding a shop that sells something other than GW, which requires you to spend time.
It requires you to learn a different set of rules, which requires brain power.

Most people are unwilling to invest either of those resources, so they chose convenience.

This sucks because if you want to play something a bit different then you’ve got a really steep hill to climb, which is another negative factor as most of us are in this hobby to relax.

I do wish that the ones who only ever play the popular game would be willing to give an alternative a fair opportunity.

Unpopular opinion but I partially blame the flg shops for stocking GW products (even when they get lower returns) for easy sales instead of pushing alternatives.

I’ve run several frostgrave campaigns including outpacing at one time the latest crusade 40k campaigns run with people jumping over to my games when they see the hilarious stupid fun where having without rule flipping.

The trick is to take that plunge and grab your idea by the cahones ⚽ and roll with it. I used old school flyers given to people for dates and made my own groups. I also went up to people playing games and actually talked to them. You are right it does take effort, but it is definitely not impossible

Good to hear some other takes on the amount of games out there. I agree that the 800lb gorilla of GW is by and large a staple which makes other games difficult to play. I agree with the uphill issue of finding games to play which are quite niche. I find that the cheerleading for a game is difficult if you don’t keep at it even with lack of other players.

I used to play Malifaux. That was popular in the store I played until the hype train fell off. The same thing had been the case with Mordheim and Blood Bowl in the long long ago. Right now SAGA AoM is what I push and try to keep people interested in. The fragmented community of interest and lack of dedication to “non-GW-standard” really is a hassle. We’re all unpopular kids trying to get other unpopular kids interested in playing unpopular games.

And by the by screw my brother’sdog once more for eating my DAS. He blames me for not keeping it secure enough. I have words about this

    ‘not secure enough’ ?

filthy animal needs to be taught some manners … that’s what.

(yet one more reason I don’t want any pets … pet-proofing everything would annoy the heck out of me. And I really need my ‘me’ time, so I don’t want to spend precious time on something if I can prevent it)

Cheerleading games can be tiring though if you don’t get anyone even slightly interested.

And it requires talking to people.
Like … *eew* … that’s like hard you know. And they might talk back which is like the worst thing ever.

I guess that’s why I’m mostly ‘collecting’ stuff.

On a positive note: I like seeing other people post about their games (that aren’t GW).  It makes me feel like I’m not the only one out there.

I personally don’t like Malifux or any games that revolve around the use of card mechanics. Keep that stuff on the MTG table.

Persistence is absolute key and to continue to invite people every year as an annual thing. Keep notes and contacts to increase your address book.

True and true again. Sadly if you (like me) only have a single digit amount of time per week at most for hobby then pushing other people becomes near impossible. More so if there is no FLGS around that does support “play in store”.

Just came back from another round of 3rd edt. 40k. This time my friend fielded 750 points of Dark Eldar. I plonked 750 points of Chaos Space Marines on the table. By the end of the shooting phase in turn 4 he had wiped out my Chaos General, 50% of my Khorne Berzerkers and 4 out of 5 terminators. I had deleted 2 troop squads, 2 Raiders and send a squad of jetbikes home in panic. Only his Archon and retinue remained. I still had one Terminater, 3 Khorn Berzerkes and 2 squads of Chaos Space Marine. So we called it a day.

Winning is such an odd feeling.
