Tried to post a photo of my shadow to prove spring had arrived…

But I can’t upload jpg files. Jpeg allowed, but not jpg for some reason.

I renamed file from jpg to jpeg and it worked.

    Feels kinda pointless now.

You look like a shadow of your former self @pagan8th

Snow today. Enough to cover everything again. No bike ride, I’m out in the suburbs and they don’t clear the bike paths like they do in the city core.

Lovely day today. First I arrived one hour too early, because I didn’t look at the time.

And then on my way home I forgot to listen to the messages by the train conductor as the train decided to return to Venlo instead as a result of an accident (usually that means someone jumped in front of a train … ).

The puns don’t translate … so I’m not doing it.
One was definitely a comment on a certain American president.

There was an actual punk band too … 😀

I wasn’t sure why some bands were considered punk when I didn’t think they were. Not every punk band is like the Sex Pistols.

So I googled and the common theme was ‘shouted lyrics’ insead of ‘singing’.

It’s very vague, but sort of works.

It’s like any genre in music … if you are ‘good’ and part of the ‘in crowd’ then you are [insert label].

Never mind that Sex Pistols were manufactured … so technically they aren’t punk at all.

And then you get someone like Beyonce (or was it another pop star?) ‘winning’ in the ‘Country music’ category, which upset the country music fans quite a bit. At which point you discover that ‘country’ is as vague a definition as ‘punk’ is.

There’s no denying that there’s a certain musical style combined with specific themes that result in the genre, but it’s not quite as fixed as the fans (and creators) think it is. Which brings me back to my argument that being part of the ‘in crowd’ is what really determines if you are making music within a specific genre …

    Anyways … that’s 100% off-topic
Although … some of it applies to tabletop games as well.

At which point is something a (miniatures) wargame and when is it a boardgame ?
I’d suspect there’s games out there that blur the lines and often fit both definitions while upsetting the fans at the same time.

Tannhauser is a game like that. It’s squad level tactical skirmish between two opposing forces that’s played out on a board that has a unique line of sight system.

It’s a boardgame and a skirmish game. If you buy all the expansions (which I did) then you can vary the forces and terrain.

Good game, but out of print now.

Boardgames use a fixed board to play on. Never mind the gaming pieces be cardboard or miniatures. Space Hulk, Hero Quest, Imperial Assault etc. All board games.

Miniature games us a board or map that can have a grid or use some kind of measuring device.

That’s my early Tuesday thoughts on that.

Now back to coffee and work.

but games like Dungeon Saga don’t use “fixed” boards. At best they are ‘fixed’ for the scenario, but then there’s scenarios for (miniature) wargames too.

Like I said … there’s a lot of gray area that makes (some) boardgames more like wargames and vice versa.

I bet AI would have serious trouble trying to define either category without having a ton of exclusions.

My Dark Objects kickstarter arrived. Or rather I collected it from the pickup location where it had been delivered.
That’s one more game and/or a couple of warbands in my pile of opportunity 😀

I’d say Dungeon Saga is a board game. It uses the same (or similar) mechanic that Doom and Imperial Assault use. Just because the board is modular and re-useable it’s not making it less of a board game.

    New rule: NO AI TALK!

Are we still allowed to use the letters A and I in words?
