A genuinely sad day…
July 22, 2025 at 11:45 pm #1937263Sad news about Ozzy. What a fantastic sound they made on those early records.
I can’t seem to manage good skin tones with Speedpaints, any tips you’d like to share?
@jeffersonpowers In answer to your question I use a zenithed undercoat. Where there is a lot of skin to paint I zenith with white over grey rather than black because the Crusader Skin, which is my go-to Speedpaint for skintones, doesn’t show up over black. I use it neat, there is little point thinning it because the tone is already quite subtle. When applying the paint I put quite a lot on, not Nuln Oil wash levels of lots but certainly much more paint than with regular acrylics. This allows the Speedpaint to settle properly into the recesses as, like a wash, it finds its level. The pigment will show more strongly where there are recessed details, like between the pecs and abs on the chests. When it first goes on it looks very pale, over the top zenithed layer (like on top of a bald head) you barely notice it is there. When it dries you get a much stronger tone appear. I think it works best in one thicker layer, rather than multiple applications as this can start to look patchy. You need to find a couple of skintones to patch or highlight afterwards if you want a smooth finish. I use Vallejo Tan for the darker areas which is where I can have a problem if my undercoat is too dark. This I do thin down to help blend with the Speedpainted areas.
Did that help? I should probably shoot a bit of video on doing this, my mates often ask me how certain effects are done and showing is much easier than describing.Well done on getting 150 finished so far this year. That’s an excellent level of output.
July 23, 2025 at 12:01 am #1937264@zoidpinhead thanks for the tips. I’ve mainly been Speedpainting over black primer with drybrushed highlights (I don’t like using sprays so this is as close as I get to zenithal). You still end up with a pretty grey base coat, which isn’t great for the lighter speedpaint colors. Of late I have been playing with using grey and even white base primer, but I’m still finding that I go back in with traditional paints for lighter areas — for faces I’m finding that the Foundry/triad approach gives me what I’m looking for without too much work. I do think part of my problem is that I usually forget that speedpaints tend to dry down a lot darker than they appear when wet.
You’ve given me some great tips though, and I’ve got one model in particular I’m working on that may benefit from your advice. Thanks!
July 24, 2025 at 3:25 pm #1937448Hobby progress? I guess tearing down/resettle the hobby space and getting into painting is ok. Getting bits and pieces painted here and there of the flotsam and jetsom to motivate myself on the army projects is a work in progress. I think finishing things I had no commitment to really is the stress relief. After the move I think the issue might be having many minis I won’t be doing anything with. I’m happy to have the extraneous stuff to just do at my leisure AS a pursuit of leisure. Speaking of, I finished something last night and thought that it was funny to look at this morning. The figure is CH2-B-3 from Prince August. I have one of the other in the trio sitting around somewhere.
( Trying to monkey with editing looks like something to try and figure out with multiple photos and breaks between for writing)

A little musical pick-me-up to take you into the weekend.
You’re welcome.

Well damn. Hulk Hogan is down for the count and is now wrestling in the sky. My condolences to Tom and everyone else who is a wrestling fan. This week is pretty rough on celebrities of our youth
