@horati0nosebl0wer it’s good to be free although finances will be a bit tight for a few years because I retired early.
It takes some getting used to… not having to do something before you can do what you want and I find myself ‘wasting’ some time because I don’t have an objective to complete.
When I was working I found that the morning walk to work was my most creative time for RPG ideas and in order to keep my ‘steps’ up I bought a cheap smart watch and go for a brisk walk every morning… just 2 or 3 miles… and I find that the walking frees my mind to be creative while I listen to something that sets my walking pace.
And i make sure I find time each day to read a book. Currently I am reading this…

The Spitfire was designed my RJ Mitchell as I’m sure you all know and he’s from my home town. We have a Spitfire in the local museum and I visited it again recently. Interesting book about the people that flew and maintained the aircraft and the impact it had on WW2.
December 15, 2025 at 3:17 pm #1953748Retiring early does have those issues. I got pensioned off at 47, and filling my days was HARD. Now it is less so, but I still have a difficult time with so much time to fill. It’s not as easy as one thinks.
December 15, 2025 at 4:42 pm #1953776@pagan8th congrats on the retirement if that is a recent thing. I’ve not made that leap yet but I have always promised myself I’d go at 55 and that is 13 months away now.
I’m not working full time at the moment and I definitely find having an organised focus for my hobby is useful, hence my participation in the annual Hobby Pledge here. YMMVDecember 15, 2025 at 4:46 pm #1953777I have enough trouble filling time during the ‘mandatory’ days off as is. Usually I find something to motivate me by the time I have to get back to work again …
@horati0nosebl0wer letting go of things ? nah …. I’m not at that stage (yet or ever?). I’ve been trying to talk myself out of kickstarters, but that’s not been as successful as I wanted it to be. Maybe next year I’ll do better ?
I think my first goal shall be to get a better understanding of what exactly is in my pile of opportunity, because I might be a bit like Gerry and find stuff I didn’t know I had 😀

The greatest warplane is the Hawker Hurricane. Spitfires are soo overrated 😉(
December 15, 2025 at 4:59 pm #1953781I’m not going to get into a debate on which is the best fighter. Opinions vary and it’s not worth arguing about.
December 15, 2025 at 5:07 pm #1953782I think @limburger was being @pagan8th humorous.
Because, obviously, the best plane was the Typhoon 😁
December 15, 2025 at 6:56 pm #1953795Finished my latest model: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1912086/

Next I’ll be working on the models for the Castle faction of Heroe’s 3.
December 15, 2025 at 7:24 pm #1953797WW2 era fighters are cool.
I loved killing the Fokkers 😀 (and some of them were Messerschidts 😉 )WW1 era had some really interesting ones the moment they started to understand what worked (like the Camel, Spad and of course the Fokker DR1).
Speaking of airplanes … the team behind IL2-Sturmovik (possibly the last and best flightsim ever) are going to cover the Korean theatre.
It really sucks that there hasn’t been anything that managed to get that level of fidelity, because most of the stuff has been arcade level crap. The modern era with beyond visual range engagements is kind of boring. Gimme guns and let me get up close and personal.
oh … and shout out to the absolute batsh!th crazy stuff the Germans were trying to get airborne near the end of WW2.
I’d love to see ‘Secret weapons of the Luftwaffe’ with modern graphics.// — edit —
They did a WW1 edition too ?
I guess these things really slip in under the radar these days.

December 16, 2025 at 5:45 am #1953825Retiring at 55. If I where to do that, I would be so broke so fast. :S It’s at least 15 more years for me from today on. On the other hand my job is partially my passion and not very demanding in regards to “being bodily able”. It’s sitting at a desk most of the time.
Tuesday. Today is dad duties, no THH!
December 16, 2025 at 7:37 am #1953829Mine involved walking 12 miles a day carrying a heavy payload and I did it for 32 years. They wanted more from me and I was starting to feel the wear and tear of the job (physical and emotional) so I grabbed a parachute and leapt.
Now I get to watch it crash from the silken comfort as I drift safely down.
December 16, 2025 at 9:20 pm #1953921I really need to organise my hobby collection first. Any and all ideas are welcome … I think my first goal shall be to get a better understanding of what exactly is in my pile of opportunity
@limburger Yes – absolutely do that. That has been my first step in advance of the move I’m hoping to make if/when the house sells. Having done that I then did a bit of a Marie Kondo on it. Anything not “sparking joy” got put to one side, everything else got properly organised and stored ready for the move in RUBs. I started with the area that I’m least attached to, which for me was my boardgames. I managed to downsize by about a third with excess either given to family or sold.
Now I’m on to the miniatures and as everything is in easy to grab boxes I can spend time sorting through each army/collection and rationalise as I go. I started in the summer and sold loads of things that no longer “sparked joy”. The cash was very welcome. Now I have boxes of armies that are sorted, planned, built and ready to paint.
December 17, 2025 at 6:17 pm #1954004@zoidpinhead if I do that I get distracted about 5 minutes into that …
Heck, if I hadn’t simply shoved everything into boxes without thinking I would still be packing stuff in order to move to my new house.
As such I really need some kind of fool proof plan that has zero opportunity for me to question the categories I put things into or else I’m definitely of chasing squirrels.
December 17, 2025 at 10:15 pm #1954013@limburger I’m presuming there was some rationale when you bought everything. Or was it all squirrel chasing then too 😀 If you have armies or games that you were buying for then that could provide your structure. Even if you just divided stuff into a couple of basic categories, say board games and miniatures games then you’ve got started and are better off than you were.
If opening boxes is going to lead to you getting distracted by the contents then good. That counts as hobby in my book 🙂
December 17, 2025 at 10:39 pm #1954019yep … there was a rationale. At least I think so 😉
I’ve got two weeks of holiday starting on saturday, so in theory I should get a lot done if I mimimize distractions and simply get going on day one.
And as you said. Even if I can get a basic stacking done then I will have achieved some measure of order in the chaos.
I’m probaby trying to get too much done at the same time. Focussing on one thing at a time may be the more rational approach to things.Definitely am going to need more RUB’s I think, although I probably won’t know what sizes are best until later. *arrgh* … there I go again; too much long term thinking about stuff that I should not be worrying about as I got no data to make accurate estimates.
December 18, 2025 at 3:55 am #1954022My pile grew today. I’m almost out of room on my shelves, in the ikea book storage area, out of space period. I need to stop buying and get painting, and then I’ll need foam storage … it never ever ends …
