Dive Into Greek Quests With McCullough’s Warriors Of Athena
October 20, 2025 by brennon
Joseph A. McCullough has not been resting on his laurels and another Osprey Games wargame with a bit of a twist is on the way in early 2026. Warriors of Athena will thrust you into the swords and sandals world of Ancient Greek myth and legend!

Here's some of the lore behind Warriors of Athena...
"In an age of monsters, humanity is besieged, sheltering in isolated city-states as the forces of destruction ravage the land. There is a spark of hope, however – the demigods. These heroes, born of the gods and granted some of the power of their divine parents, stand fast against the chaos. Explorers, warriors, and diplomats, they sail the wine-dark sea, seeking adventure, battling horrific creatures, and protecting the helpless."
Warriors of Athena can be played in three different ways. You can dive into the game solo and take control of a brave hero and their crew heading off to battle fearsome creatures of Greek myth. You could be your very own Jason and lead your Argonauts on a heroic voyage!
You can also play Warriors of Athena cooperatively with your heroes banding together as part of great expeditions. One player can also take on the role of the Oracle and script the scenarios and challenges that the heroes will overcome on the tabletop.

Warriors of Athena is spread over two different books. Warriors of Athena: Heroes contains all of the core rules needed to play your games. The game uses a simple, d20-based mechanic and the rules themselves are quick to pick up. Inside, you will also find lots of character options, plus arms and armour of divine origin, abilities and treasure for you to discover. You have a lot of scope when it comes to building your hero.
McCullough has given you all of the options to "create your demigod, assemble their loyal crew, and set out into the perilous Aegean to forge a legend!" If this has captured your attention, you should note that you'll also need Warriors of Athena: Quests to dive in properly.
Warriors of Athena: Quests // Osprey Games
The Quests book contains everything that you'll need for running your adventures in the world of Greek myth. You will find a bestiary of gods, monsters and other types of adversaries. You will also find advice for building solo, cooperative and Oracle-focused adventures, plus four multi-scenario campaigns, pre-written so you can dive straight into the action.
You will also have plenty of gorgeous illustrations between the two books, thanks to the hand of Hazem Ameen (as you can see above!). This sounds like a fascinating game, especially because you can come at it from three different perspectives. The Oracle mode is great for those looking for a neat GM-led game.
As a bonus, whilst there are plenty of great Ancient Greek miniatures (both Fantasy and Historical) already, North Star has also mentioned that they will be making miniatures for this game! Watch out for the full release in February 2026.
Could you be tempted to dive into Warriors of Athena?

This man pumps out games faster than I can play them, yet I must have everything he makes…
Joseph McCullough makes good stuff, and it’s cool to see a game set in Greek myth.
I love the Greek Myths.
If only I had backed Mythic Battles: Pantheon and painted the contents of the Core Box and Pandoras Box of stretch goals.
Wait a minute… I did back Mythic Battles Pantheon and painted the stuff 🙂
Primed and ready!
This has been a long time coming. I first saw it spread over a couple of issues of WSS (many years ago) as a Greek mythic expansion to Frostgrave. There was a short campaign and I was fascinated.
Gamer ADHD meant I didn’t get properly stuck in but it’s lived rent free in my head since.
Foundry, Footsore and Lucid Eye are good sources for your minis and monsters.
Not convinced as think I prefer the Silver Bayonet D10 system of his, also feels strange for him to need you to buy 2 books to play the game, that seems illogical
that depends if you really need that second book or if it is more like the campaign books he’s done for his other systems.
(and I wonder if that means he can do a ‘quests’ book for other mythologies as well … )
So they have opted to go straight for a 2 book release than wait a few months for a supplement. The Osprey books are always nicely done, but there is a lot of dead space in them too which could easily be filled. After a few years now its pretty clear Osprey & McCullough have a formula for putting out quite a few books when a few less might do the same job.
Sounds like a good excuse to look at the Mortal Gods: Mythic range at Footsore…
Another excuse to finally buy Conquest City States minis
This certainly appeals to the old Greek in me. Good thing I have a lot of minis and terrain ready to go.
I’m certainly going to have a go at this. I painted all of Mythic Battles and have loads of historic miniatures as well so I guess I’m going to be ready to go. I’m sure I’ll pick up the North Star range as well though 😀
