The Last Market of Bataar – terrain challenge

About the Project
This is my project log for an Age of Sigmar terrain piece, for the Terrain Challenge 'end is nigh' comp 2018. It's inspired by the tales of the floating city of Bataar from the Realm of Fire - Age of Sigmar. The new core book gives us the background that this once powerful trading city that was over run during the Age of Chaos, after the destruction of the Iron Armada. I'm looking to make a remnant of the huge merchant hub, a broken floating ship - really just a trading post now, a last reminder of the once great market. I hope to share my thinking and choices all the way through this project. This will be a terrain piece and not a diorama or display board, so the level of detail (for now at least) will reflect that, due to time and budget, plus as a gaming piece I need to leave room for the models to game over in/over it.

First round of detailing
It’s now time to add some detailing. Finishing off the laketown houses and using all the cool extra bits of those kits to hang on walls. One important thing to keep in mind at this stage is I want this to be a gaming piece, so must keep the floors free of stuff that would stop you putting a mini down.
Then the large doors needed making, kept these simple and not able to open, again focus on a gaming piece and not super detailed diorama.
Add timbers
Now needed to timber the plastic laketown houses into the structure of the market, plus hide all the ugly angle ground edges…
As this market is meant to be the remains of a once great city, I can get away with a very rough and ready look.
Main construction complete
The main hull is complete with the major elements in place. Happy with the overall shape and function. Lots of planks to game on and around with lots of ways on and off the ship. Also have different heights to the docking areas so most other craft should be able to tie up.
Like the mix of decking and the grids (saved from the original toy) that let you see the ground way below.
Next stage is to add some extra elements, like roof windows, an additional toilet…
… make a main doors. Plus make some planters for the food on board. Then plan to rattlecan spray it and do a test game before going back to add more detail and look to make the market stalls and goods for sale.
Checking playability as you go
Always keep a handy model on the desk to make sure you don’t kitbash an area so that your bigger average model can’t use it.
Cladding and flooring
Next job was to start cladding and ‘offering up’ some building elements. Cladding involved closing off the voids in the ships to create living and storage spaces. There would be too small to game in so happy to block them out completely.
Wanted to really give the feel this was built up over time and kept afloat with additions and different parts used from all over the realm.
Here I’ve hinted at the piping running under the main deck. Fun cutting an access in the planking for the inspection hatch.
More tech
As this is a floating market wanted to ensure there is plenty of Sci-fi tech on show. Pipe work and boilers keeping the aether moving around the craft at all times.
Adding strength to the whole piece
As this will be a gaming piece and something I’ll want to carry to events and mates, plus have games on, decided it needed some strengthening. Used some solid wood rod hot glued into place.
Fixing the shape and mocking up elements
Back to the hobby desk and it’s time to put base boards in place, to hold the sections apart to give me the market space in the centre. But keen to keep the existing decking in place to add another level of play.
Works out the piping is a bit deeper than planned once I’ve put in place, so plan to cut them in half to ensure once I plank the internal space it’s not reduced my levels.
