About the Project
Some of my fondest memories of board games hang on one singularly game…. The game of fantasy football – Blood Bowl! Anyone my age may recall the original card standee game, then the version with a polystyrene pitch, all the way up to the current iteration. One thing however has plagued me over the years, my desire to field the Chaos All Stars. Now back in the day, a friend of my brother called “dibs” on the All Stars, and as a result he got to essentially be them through all the different versions of the game. Now back then, none of us could paint – our chosen method / materials was to buy the small Humbrol paints (probably lead lined, and toxic) and then sharpen a matchstick to use as a brush (we were poor!). But for some reason the coach of the All Stars too me seemed like the worst of us in terms of skill. His approach was to paint the lower half red, the top half green, and add a bit of flesh paint for a face or a hand etc. He once did elevate his painting style to incorporate brown if it was so desired. I would look on thinking “I can’t paint, but I could do a better job than that”, now fast forward to the present (well technically we are in the present, what I had done there was rewind to the past) but I digress….and I have decided for no other reason than to right that child hood wrong, to buy, build, paint, and field a Classic All Star team.

Step 7
By this stage, GW launch their DoomLords, mainly a combination of Chaos Warriors – who wouldn’t look out of place in Mad Max 2. Which isn’t a knock as Mad Max 2 is one of the greatest films ever made!
But I just don’t think they will fit in with my team.
The biggest issue I have at the moment is getting something that is like / similar to Duke Luthor Von Hawkfire – the All Star’s main thrower.
To this end I stumbled across a few websites that will actually custom design and 3D print minis!
A few emails later and a few sketches of what I had in mind, and for the princely sum of 800 Euros, I can get a Von Hawkfire the world would be proud of……or I can buy an old lead one off Ebay for a tenner.
It was a nice dream while it lasted!
However I do get a proxy mini to use as Lord Borak the Despoiler.
Step 6
Things are progressing really well at this stage.
However I now need some fellas to form the back bone of the team.
With that in mind I get some “normal” looking Chaos guys in.
One has to be the classic All Star Player “Constrictor” Atlanson, and the other guy I buy from RN Studios, purely on the basis that I think he looks like Kirk Douglas from Spartacus. Which I am sure is intentional as he is billed as “Glatos” on their website.
Step 5
It’s going well so far, however things feel a little “sausage heavy”. With that in mind I wanna introduce some kind of female Chaos element.
Another extensive internet search brings me to Sukubus minatures.
Sadly, the mini I want is out of the stock, and as this was once again another online campaign they might not produce anymore.
A few email exchanges between myself and the very nice folk over there bags me this.
Caution, she isn’t shy.
Step 4
Now, I have got the line up in my head, I kinda know what I want, its just a matter of sourcing them.
The first thing I want to get is a cool looking Dark Elf. GW have just released their Dark Elves, but I am not really feeling it.
Back to the internet and many searches later I find Greebo Games, who have just had a successful online campaign to produce their Obsidan Dusk team.
We snag ourselves this little fella.
Step 3
Now, my initial desire was to try and recreate the classic Phil Lewis All Stars (I attached a pic for reference), but some of them were scratch built conversions and I have neither the desire nor the talent to recreate those.
So what I decided upon was to try and have miniatures to represent some of the most (in)famous players during the various iterations of the All Stars.
Settling on the fact I definitely needed a Troll, a Minotaur, a Dark Elf, a Skaven, and a Goblin.
Step 2
Now I had the captain in place, I had a look about to see what other Chaos players I could get.
At this time GW hadn’t released a new Chaos Team, so I was forced to look at other companies.
The first one I stumbled across was Willy Minatures, who do a nice range in Fantasy Football stuff.
I was able to track this little fella down – a knock off Lewdgrip Whiparm!
Step 1
So. my first step was to get a good Orge mini that could represent Morg ‘N’ Thorg the famous captain of the All Stars.
After much researching, I settled on the Forge World Morg. Here he is in his painted glory.
