About the Project
With the glorious re-assurgence of Runequest and Glorantha (I will be purchasing the slipcase edition tommorow) I will be painting and converting models building scenery (two boards worth, one based on a Dark Age style settlement to represent Sartar and the other some Greek/Middle Eastern style building to represent Pavis and the Big Rubble). I will be looking at both Mortal Gods and Saga/Fantasy Saga for rules.

A few more from the painting table
Could not fit all the photos in previous entry so here are a couple more photos of the current painting table.
From left to right, two Lucid Eye models that I am using as my character figures in my current game of Runequest. A Lion Tower model whose spear has been replaced with a sword to represent Orlanth in his human form, based on the image from the Runequest cover. Behind him is a Lucid Eye Centaur.
Two models to represent Jar-El the Razoress, the one with the Harp is inspired by the original Archive model, the other more representive of current iterations, she is backed up by four honour guard all models from Atlantic miniatures, they are accompanied by her companion Beat Pot Aelwrin converted from a victris Greek slinger.
I have been working on these baboons tonight adding swords and helmets and sculpting on additional armour and shamanic accoutrements. In the back is a death cultist, model from Lucid Eye.I hope to have another update with some of these models finished begining of next week.
I'm back to where I love
Having rebooted my hobby mojo with my Silver Bayonet project (progress is being made) I have returned to this project.
I have loved Runequest and the world of Glorantha for almost 40 years now and have had several starts to collecting the miniatures from the first Archive models, through the wonderful citadel and Ral Partha ranges, but I really feel now is the best time to be building a collection due to the variety of models now available both the semi official models from Fenris, Infinity Engine, Mad Knight models and Rapier, as well as the many excellent Ancient and Fantasy ranges. This is my favourite way to build a collection, I can avoid FOMO and just pick and choose my favourite models from sculptors and manufacturers I like.
This is my primary project and I want to show of some completed models as well as what is on my painting table.
Harrek the Beserk, a Hasslefree model with sculpted bearskin cloak and beard so pleased with this model, like all the three models that I have finished this week, he has been almost finished for a year now.
Starting to build up my gaming table, I plan to replace the gaming mat with the Deepcut Plains mat as in my opinion it is more versatile and representive of Gloranthan landscape.better represents
Another view, the ruined walls are from Fenris Games Rubble City range, I am waiting for my nest weekend off (5/6th December) to paint. The figures are my Stormbull from previous ancient post.
The remainder of photos are the models on my painting table. These are ducks from Lucid Eye, all four models where duplicates, so I removed swords from three of them repositioned arms and heads and added spears the child duck is an original Citadel model. In the background are Fenris trolls.
I am currently painting these, all are Hasslefree miniatures representing my take on Griselda, Wolfhead, Hanufa and a inappropriately attired Stormbull cultist from the wonderful stories by Oliver Dickinson. In the background are some priestess figures from Lucid Eye and a troll from Rapier miniatures..My return with a load of old bull...
Having now completed my move of house, I have returned to this project. I am about to GM my first game ofRunequest, played in it loads but this first time as a GM.
Had this model for ages, converted from the old Chaos Dwarf Taurus, with a mouth resculpt and old metal Tzeentch Lord of Change wings. I was originally planning to paint him white, but then I found an image on line.Where I am at now
An old SALUTE figure that had remained on the sprue til now, and a figure converted from one of the Victrix figures converted to be a Hero from the Lunar Empire, Beat Pot Aelwrin a warrior cook.
With green stuff added to Beat Pot. I have converted the helmet into a cooking pot. Sculpted hair and additions to butchers apron. This month I have just spent my birthday money on: two new variants for Jar El, 4 female hoplites, and a Minotaur from RBJ Games, 4 baboons and a unicorn and fowl from Armourcast, the parts to make a Storm Bull from eBay, Saga rule book, Age of Magic, dice and a shepherd and some sheep from Gripping Beast. Now awaiting delivery.
The evolution of a duck
Oars and Rowlocks from Cornwall Model Boats. I will need to carve and sand down the squarish blocks on the six smaller oars.
Looking at the larger steering oar I realised it would sit to tall for a poor little duck to handle. So I decided to build a platform to raise the steersman up. I have mainly used GW skeleton spear shafts and carved sprue. Here is the frame for the platform base.
The side oars in place, now need to bind them to Rowlocks with cotton which I will then soak in Super Glue to add much needed strength.Spring Clean
I have unfortunately been unable to do much painting recently as I have been looking after my mother who is rather ill, she is now in a care home and am returning to work Monday.
I have been thinking about this project and with the Spring Clean challenge being announced I felt this fitted that niche really well. I have been given permission to join the Spring Challenge and hopefully it will encourage me to make real progress.
I will now explain why I think this is a Spring Clean.
- This is the resurrection of an old project of which I only have the two ships and the painted Rhinoman. I sold all other figs as unhappy with them.
- Lots of bits taken from different extinct/on hold projects (see below).
- I bought the figures to resurrect this project about a year ago and had done nothing with them.
- I am reworking this project in the light of the recent releases of Runequest and particularly Saga: Age of Magic, which I will be building all my warbands around.
This is the piece that first made me think of this project as a Spring Clean. This boat is from my original Runequest project. I plan to add further detail and enhance this model. See next update.
The other ship from my original project this one was never finished, so will be doing that and adding a couple of additional details.
A piece of scenery from a now defunct French Indian Wars project, redoing ground colour to fit in with this project.
A building from a very old North West Frontier project, repainting the walls, currently I have just base coated and given a wash.
Some figures from an on hold Symbaroum project, will be able to use them in both projects once finished painting.
The wolf is from the Symbaroum project and two bears and snake creature are from a failed Draculas America project. (Lots of failed projects here?)
An old Citadel miniature tree man that I have had for years and years, though does not fit any specific Gloranthan creatures descriptions one of my favourite models so am redoing this. Can use as a tree spirit or somesuch. The Adventurers Assemble
I am starting afresh on a project that has been attempted by me before but I never was fully happy with the models.
I have a couple of pieces from old project and a while ago I bought new figures from Hasslefree for some of my characters/adventurers.
This week I started work on them inspired by tomorrows release of the slipcase edition.
The one figure I still have from previous projects, I could never part with him, I love how the skin came out. The model is by Fenris Games ( I will be collecting three trolls from Fenris at SALUTE). I will be getting most of my creatures from Fenris when he relaunches them shortly
Harrek the Beserk, Gunda the Guilty and Jar-El. I am really pleased how the bearskin came out (quite surprised as it looked bloody awful until I sculpted the fur) Harrek was always the figure I could not get right never had the presence. But this one has it in spades (Hasslefree as are all my adventurer models unless stated otherwise.
Storm Bull cultist, Fellissa, Hanufa and Griselda, the last three from the excellent Griselda short stories by Oliver Dickinson, they originally appeared in very early White Dwarf and are currently available in a collected edition from Chaosium
A Dinosaur (found at work a discarded Schliech toy, I have just based him as am very happy with the factory paintjob, thinking of buying more of these) two druids/shamen ( Red Box Games) and a Duck ( Fenris Games)
Another survivor from the old project never finished though I have just recently carried out a few repairs, painted the sail, just need to weather it all. I will try out Mel the Terrain Tutors wet washing technique.
The wolfshead (Fenris Games) added to the model. Harreks pirate ships had live wolfs head on the prow of their ships.
A hill/island made from insulating film (I will do a tutorial when I make some more) this one was a proof of concept.I have pre-ordered a copy of Mortal Gods and will be looking at the rules to see if they will work. If I don’t like them I am sure there will be elements that could inspire me. Plus I get a load of figures I can use as Lunars. For the Sartarites I will be using a mix of Foundry Ancient Germans and Thracians ( combining and converting some of them).
When I visit SALUTE this year I hope to purchase Saga and Fantasy Saga rules as I think these will be better suited to the stories I want to tell. I need to incorporate Rune Magic into game so will be looking at Mortal Gods and the battleboards to achieve this. Also hope to get some scenery.
I have made more progress tonight and will post update once all base coating is finished and will continue to update at each stage.
