About the Project

So…I've fallen in love with the world of Infinity. I've acquired a boat load of their metal. I've assembled quite a bit of it. I started and finished painting up most of the Aristeia! minis. However, to date I've not painted a single Infinity mini. Part of that is because I've been intimidated by what others have done and I want to do the quality justice. Part of it is that I've become a bit overwhelmed with everything I've purchased. So, here's to getting more of what I have assembled (because otherwise I'm likely to repurchase a model/box by mistake) and to getting some of it painted. While it's unlikely I'll have anyone to start playing this with for some time, now is a breather to get at least two armies painted up so that I'm ready to go once I can go out and play again.

Got a chance to paint up some test for the CA. I’ll post better pics soon but I’m pleased with how they came out. For the Nox I pretty much just followed the “How to Paint Shasvasti” pamphlet that came in their paint set.

Priming

Since I took the pic in the previous post I spent an evening priming everything that was bare metal. There are many moments/stages in the hobbying process that I find particularly gratifying: getting minis assembled is one, having a solid basecoat on is another, finishing the final highlights and seeing a mini really come to life is another. I noticed last night that priming is another, particularly priming with an airbrush (and a hairdryer–an essential tool in the process). When the shine dies down and you can really see the detail it’s exciting.

I will also say that CB’s sculpting and keying of minis has improved leaps and bounds over the years. Priming everything it was pretty clear which figures were early CB sculpts and which were more recent. I was also reminded of the wailing and gnashing of teeth while assembling the early ones and the really straightforward gluing from the new sculpts.

So good on you Corvus Belli! Keep the minis coming (though my wallet and my groaning shelves say otherwise).

The state of the collection

So…this happened. Not sure how or when but it did. Not quite everything is assembled but most everything is. Still haven’t played a game so that makes this even more silly but it has caused me to cut back on my board game purchases. I only have so much junkie in me and it’s been redirected toward miniatures games of late.

Bases are done

It was a bit of a slog but I got all the bases done. I should have enough for the Defiance enemies and all of the other Combined Army stuff I have. In the end I’m pleased with these. I think they work pretty well.
The process was pretty much what I laid out on the previous post, though I did do the final wash with a darker purple (the 74.026 Purple Hex rather than the 74.027 Amethyst). You can see a step by step in the gallery, going back in time—though you may not see much of a difference from highlight to highlight.

Made some progress on these. Not too much further to go but boy are there a lot of bases here. I’m just hoping I don’t have to do another batch to get all the CA I have onto bases—though this is more than enough for what’s in Defiance.

Enemy bases

Here’s a test base for the enemies. These are MicroArtsStudio “Possessed” base toppers. They’re supposed to go into round lipped bases but…they fit perfectly straight on the Corvus Belli bases.

Process:

  • a succession of dry brushes with the colors in the first two gallery pics, working L to R and ever lighter
  • Painted the tentacles/growing bits with ever lighter touches of the colors in pics 3 & 4 in the gallery, with a wash of the darkest as a final stage
  • Picked out the orb with the Montana paints in the last gallery pic (the labels have rubbed off so I can’t list their names)

Overall I’m pleased with the result. I worry it may be a bit too busy and detract from the minis and/or the game. It may have been better to put everything on the same base style. Time will tell. My Infinity CA will definitely be on these so I’ll probably keep the Defiance ones on them too.
