About the Project
I was gifted a bunch of Dweghom for Conquest in Christmas 2019 so here is the journey to put them together, paint them and hopefully play with them.

Started painting
Whilst I still have miniatures to assemble I need to get started with the painting to at least test the painting technique for the majority of the figures. I decided that I’m followed John’s pattern from the Hold Warrior and so started painting the Hold Ballistae.
So far I’ve primed in Grey Seer and cover most of the figure with basilicanum grey. I did learn from John’s video and avoided painting the beards and the face as well as the cloth of the banner. I’ve added warp lightning for the banner and the pauldrons as well as the knees. The faces are gulliman flesh.
I’ve included John’s video below to remind me more than anything.
Finished the Hold Ballistae
Well I cracked on this afternoon to complete the 12 Hold Ballistae. I got out the next set of 12 bases and found I’d run out of 1p pieces. Might have to visit a bank to get a bag of them.
So for the decission on the next batch of 12 figures, Warriors or Ballistae. Whilst the poll on the facebook group is coming down in favour of doing a full unit of 12 Hold Warriors I like the thoughts of those who have suggested 2 bases of Warriors and 1 of Ballistae. It will give me a little more flexibility when creating units and you never know one day I might buy another box of Hold Warriors/Ballistae.
Hold Ballistae
I’ve continued to build the Dweghom, I want to have the whole lot built before I start painting and this lot mean that I’ve crossed the 50% boundary of built figures.
So I decided that this week I needed to try and assemble one figure a night, with the exception of Friday when I’ll do as many as I can. Friday is Hobby night and whilst chatting on Zoom it is good to focus on the figures and not on work. I’ve finished off the Flames Beserkers and made a start on a unit of 12 Hold Ballistae. Had a thought whilst building them this afternoon that it would be good to see if I had enough of one type of shield for the whole unit to have the same shield design. Given that I have another unit of 12 Hold Warriors/Ballistae in the Start Playing box and that I didn’t glue the shields onto the first unit of Hold Warriors I managed to find 12 Shields of the same design and 12 of a second design that can go with the unit of Hold Warriors.
I also had kept all the spare bits from when I built the first box of Hold Warriors/Ballistae which meant I could find enough of the same arm holding the “crossbow” to build those rather than the very odd looking ones.
Next up is a decission with the other 12 Hold Warriors/Ballistae, do I a) build 12 Hold Warriors, b) build 12 Hold Ballistae or c) a mixture of the two..
More Flames Beserkers
I’ve moved on to building the models in the Wave 2 Start Playing set that I won through the Facebook group 12 months ago. I know I’ve had these models sitting around for far too long.
On Monday I managed to assemble 6 Flames Beserkers and the Ardent Kerawegh. I do love the resin models in particular they look great and go together really easily with a bit of superglue.
Hold Thanes finished
I forgot to take a photograph, but during last nights End of the Year Hobby Hangout I cracked out the 9 Hold Thanes that I hadn’t assembled earlier in the week. I now have 4 regiments assembled.
The other focus of the last few days has been magnetising the bases and stands, the aim is to keep the miniatures on the stands, but also keep the stands in the boxes. I asked in the facebook group what others were using and the strongest suggestion was washers and magnets. Well I took a look online at the cost of washes and they worked out at about 20p a washer. I decided it was a lot cheaper to use 1p coins and fortunately my wife had just emptied our 1-2-5 pot so I have a lot of 1p coins to hand. Magnets came from amazon and I purchased the 3mm diameter by 2mm thick variety. I found that they need to stick up a little inside the well in the stand to hold the figure, but this is a balancing act as too much and the figure doesn’t sit properly in the stand.
I did have a look on YouTube for a video on how to magnetise the stands and bases and found this one:
Hold Warriors assembled, next up Hold Thanes
I’ve finished assembling the 12 Hold Warriors in my original box and now I have moved on to the Hold Thanes. I have to say that is one large banner.
The Hold Thanes are much easier to work out on assmbly, the front, back and both sides are clearly labelled with letters so you can get the right parts. I’m not sure whether it is having the pigment back in, but these figures also stick together much easier than the Hold Warriors did.
First Game
I know I’ve had this game nearly 2 years and last night was the first time I had played it. Covid got in the way. Now if you’ve been following you’ll know that I have very little assembled, so I had to borrow an army from my friendly opponent (thanks Paul). A dweghom army hit the battlefield against the Spires. My reinforcement dice didn’t play nicely and so he had the first turn all to himself. I ended up loosing on the victory points, but we played an extra turn afterwards which resulted in much more of a bloodbath for the Spire.
Photos below (and yes two stands of 100Kingdoms had to be used to complete the Hold Thanes unit.
Broadside 2022
Well the club has decided that we are going to put on a Conquest mass battle for Broadside 2022 and I have to get my Dweghom done in time for June, that’s 6 months away so I can’t really hang around. I have completed a few of the leader figures for the game, including the one I was painting last time I posted here (that was July last year)…
So Friday night I got back to assembling my figures and completed putting together 6 Flame Beserkers, which completes the unit. I am also halfway through a unit of Hold Warrior and have 2 of the Inferno Automata assembled.
So I need to get another 6 Hold Warriors done on the first unit. I have the Wave 2 Starter Box with another 24 Hold Warriors/Ballistae and 12 more Flames Beserkers, I also have 3 boxes of Dragonslayers/Hold Thanes to assemble.
