About the Project

I tackled a lot of painting that was on my shelf in 2020 but one of the projects I identified but didn't really get anywhere with was my old copy of the Warhammer Age of Sigmar. I started exploring options for rebasing the Khorne Bloodbound with a lava and rocks base and the Stormcast Eternals on a ruins base and then painting all of them.

I had no idea how awesome looking the fleshound would look when done! And it didn’t take that much work to complete it either.

  • Highlight using Citadel Wazdakka Red on the most pronounced areas of skin

  • Pick out the skin bumps, the razorcrest on the back and the face details with Citadel Dawnstone

Since I am on a little bit of a Khorne painting kick I picked out a half finished Valkya the Bloody.  I started with the wings as they are the most prominent part of the model that I still had in the undercoat.

  • Use several thinned coats of Citadel Bugmans Glow
  • Wash with Citadel Carroburg Crimson
  • Thin Citadel Cadian Fleshtone so that it flows easily off the brush.  Use a thin brush to pick out the raised scars and creases in the wings.

Painting Unhealthy Skin

I researched several different skin tones and decided to use an unhealthy light skin tone for the Lord of Khoren and the Bloodstoker.  It gives them both a very pale look that contrasts well with the scars.

  • Base the skin with Citadel Rakarth Flesh
  • Cover the entire skin with Citadel Flayed One Flesh. Use several thin coats to cover the model.
  • Wash with Citadel Reikland Fleshshade
  • Leaving the wash in the recesses layer with Citadel Flayed One Flesh
  • Thin Citadel Screamer Pink to almost a wash like consistency and use it on the scars
  • Highlight raised edges of the skin with Citadel Pallid Wych Flesh

Making Lava Bases!

After rebasing the Khorne Bloodbound on the cork I wanted to make it look like a dark brown rock. Something that wouldn’t contrast from the lava too much and yet also blend well with the dark red.

Dark Brown Rocks (Cork)

  • Use several thinned coats of Citadel Dryad Bark
  • Wash with Citadel Nuln Oil
  • Drybrush with Citadel Dryad Bark
  • Drybrush lighter than the previous coat with Citadel Gorthor Brown. Focus on the edges rather than all over.

Lava

  • Base with several coats of Citadel Averland Sunset
  • Randomly spot with Citadel Troll Slayer Orange and then use Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet within the previous orange spots.
  • On the Averland Sunset coat randomly spot with Citadel Flash Gitz Yellow and then use Citadel White Scar similar to the Evil Sunz Scarlet within the previous yellow spots.
  • Once dry cover with think coat of Citadel Mordant Earth (I went back over the first coat with another coat when it was partially dry. Approximately 2-3 minutes after applying the first coat.

Khorne Bloodbound Rebasing Begins

When I originally received this set I never did anything more than use some sand or flock to base my miniatures.  Since that time, however, I have started doing a whole lot more to spruce the minis up.  The idea I had was to set the Khorne Bloodbound in the old starter set on rock based lava bases.  But before any rebasing could occur I needed to remove them from their old bases… the clipping begins!
