About the Project
After knocking out a few paintings i decided to base a new 40k army on them. They are not going to look normal....

First test peice
So pleased with the first test peice.
Recipe first.
White spray paint base coat.
Followed by:
White areas – black up through brown oil washes.
Red areas – Dark red, through magenta and flesh oil washes
Lights – red through orange to white oils
Base is cracked gw tech paint with black through browns oil washes, allowing the black oil washes from the main mini to drip down and pool around the feet.
So yes im really please with this. It has a ‘painting feel’ and the #28 feel without going too dark. Also i actively chose not to contrast the base. Why? you ask dear reader? well that’s because it makes the lights and reds pop more and gives a more desolate dusty feel. I will not be flocking it 🙂
Also yeah only a 1k army cause im going to cry doing 2k only another 40+ minis to do……
Guess what turned up
Guitar wires turned up, things made.
Simple tutorial. Make holes, put guitar wire in, glue.
What you do need to watch for is the wire will get hard sharp bends if you just bend it, so you really need to wrap it round a curve if you want a gentle curve.
Daemons design
So kicking around the design for the Daemons, ultimately i want the mortal element to look grungy and grim dark and i want the Daemons to contrast that. White glossy monoliths that are strange and clean, like the imaterium has spawned geometric tupla.
If i try and make the army as mechanical as possible, as if someone sees perfection in the machine, the daemons become reflections of that attempted perfection….aw crap im doing dark mechanicum arnt i?
I guess im revisiting the army list to get more ‘machines’ in. I think also i need to look at less marines and more ‘machine people’ using marine profiles.
Narratively that makes the new dark pact special rule play out as supercharging the daemon engines in them. That feels kinda cool? Shame that at the moment there is no way of bringing in chaos knight units, as a wardog would make a cool centre peice.
Why isnt my guitar wire here yet and murder bots
So while i wait for the bits i need, here’s a mock up of the bikers. The cowled one is the leader and the wires will flow back like a lions main, the others will either have the same or like the pictured image, the cables aimed forward in attack.
I still need to think of something to represent a chaos icon.
I will now sit like a bronte hero staring out the window waiting for the post drinking laudanum and composing poems about grey plastic.
New edition, new army, no army lists.
Well ive picked up some Ridge Walkers and i sat down to discover im missing my guitar strings and my plastic glue…..
So rather than be moody and sulk i thought it best to plan the army out. I’m doing 1k because frankly i dont have the time, nor patience to play 2k games anymore. The 9th edition stupid rules burn out is real.
However a fun little force to play mates in the woods (Yeah i get to game in a viking village with attached cowboy town in the SE of england) i reckon i can do something fun.
Of course we dont have lists yet so im using 9th to create a vague list.
Chaos makes sense, even if once looking at it i discovered it certainly wont be optimal for what i want.
The idea is ‘The Changebringers’ i could do the chaos chicken god, but they dont have bikes so i wont. Instead i will do regular chaos marines even if their rules seem a bit meh. Also 25% of the army will be daemons, because i want swarms of white monoliths that appear out of nowhere in a spooky way.
Leading the force, a chaos wizard marine. It makes sense with the theme, and chaos should have wizards. I will figure out the mini for this later.
A squad of chaos marines and a squad of accursed cultists. A body guard for the wizard and some changed victims.
Mini’s again im not sure as i dont want the usual baroque chaos vibe. I may use Primaris with head swaps and the changed can be anything. although i may just step outside the GW ecosphere for this.
For anti vehicle duty a pair of hell brutes. Obviously one with twin fists and the other with power scourge. Sure guns would be smarter, but the minis will look cooler. I may switch up one to have belly las cannons? Also distraction carnifex is a good distraction. I may cannibalise some war dog kits for these or use mechanicus robots, i think the war dogs will look more interesting and allow for more conversions, also they will fit better with the ‘bikers’
Fast attack, a pair of squads of chaos bikers with melta. This is what im using the ridge walkers for, also the reason for wanting war dogs for the hell brutes because of the similar look. Im not going to have the riders and im going to drill them out and add wire tendrils.
So the chaos marine part will be
Chaos Marine Wizard
10 Chaos Marines
8 Acursed
2 Hellbrutes
2 x 4 Bikers
Now the daemons.
I want white monoliths and maybe other geometric shapes for my daemons. Looking at the daemons i could use horrors look right. squads of blue horrors. They look like they will all have deep strike so ‘suddenly appearing’ on objectives and firing of bolts of pew pew feels right. Also splitting into other shapes like fractal recursions seems on point. Plus they will probably, as troops, have solid obsec numbers.
3 x squads of blue horrors.
So thats the list. Now where in the name of all things cool are my glue and wire……
Lets talk tactics?
the bikers push objectives and hunt high value targets, the hell brutes running after them to make target selection harder. Once they have pushed the horrors drop to secure and act as pew pew tar pits.
The accursed are there to push harder with one of the Hellbrutes and the marines and wizard can secure a home objective and are punchy enough to hold against light and medium troops; and you never know maybe the space wizard (not from the moon0 might have some defensive tech? certainly the strat that’s been shown will work well to keep them safe.
Its also a mobile force with some solid reaction pieces. Is it going to be super competitive? no idea, doubt it and really that’s not why i play these days.
Artsy stuff
So in real life im an art teacher and free lance artist….not that you could tell from my mini painting. So we have a new 40k Edition turning up and i want to do a 1k army for games with mates.
I also dont want a trad army, i want something Odd. I think im going with Chaos, just because it fits and the new rules of beseeching dark powers fits with the idea I have.
I’m currently doing a bunch of paintings a bout white monoliths, apocalypse, dark monsters and the like.
They have kick started the idea of dark machines and pale figures worshiping a white monolith. Pictures below.
So the colour scheme is right there, blacks, burnt umber and reds through pinks. I think its going to have to be an oil wash over white undercoat sort of paint job.
So white monoliths. If go with a Daemon prince or Evil space wizard i think the leader figure will be a floating white monolith. I imagine that it wont be tourney legal, but it will look cool. It will need some cultists on the base mind you and there will have to be a big bundle of cultists for it to join. Which will look great. New rule eh GW? don’t mind if ignore the game and just use it to look cool? cheers. On Cultists, i think pale stalking humans is order of the day.
I hate chaos spikes, they just make me think the forces of chaos are going through their awkward Clare’s accessories spiked accessories period.
So i think Delaque gangers are the order of the day.
Now obviously strange visitors form other dimensions need something to round up people for processing and ‘ascending’ into pale face cultists. Im a big fan of the art from Tales from the loop and obviously someone from GW is as well, so what better than converting some Cawdor Ed201’a. Take the rider off, add a few guitar strings to make tentacles and a big ol lens on the front for ‘judging’ and we have cooler chaos bikers. Underslung meltas and chain weapons for vehicle hunting and noming light infanty.
So at the moment i have in my head:
Leader – white monolith
Troops – a lump of 20 cultists in delaque, converted humans
Fast attack – a couple of units of 4 walky tenticle robots
Now i will need some Chaos Marines for troops, i think a couple of hellbrutes to punch vehicles and set fire to people.
I don’t know what i will use for those. But i think a second unit of cultists need to be in there to look cool. This means i will probably be using 2 MSU chaos marine units. I’m almost tempted by Primaris marines, but head swapping a lantern or lens in. Thats a to think about.
As to the Hellbrutes? I think i will go with Admech robots. I did some for my 30k army and i think that they have the right feel, just with more cables.
This will be very infrequent as a project till payday.
