About the Project

I have accumulated a lot terrain over the years. Some of it was kits and a lot of it was various garbage that you might think would make good terrain. This project will be focused on 40K style terrain, but I think I might do some Drop Fleet space terrain as well.

The ladders Gerry and Ben were interested in, are from a kit called the Hexagon Construction Set from Pegasus Models.  They make a range of sci-fi terrain kits at very good prices.  They are soft plastic, but great for kit bashing.  I got these years ago, not sure they are still available.

New Terrain for perhaps new games

I have some friends who are not war gamers.   They are your more typical board gamers.  We have decided to do a Gaming & Grilling night every month or two allowing for weather.  They wanted to give 40K a go, so I have been teaching them 5th edition, which is probably the edition I have the most experience in.  I played mostly 3rd, 4th, and 5th, with probably a couple games in 6th.

Anyway, this gave me some motivation to build and paint a bunch of terrain.  More than I have done in quite some time.  I’ve got a mix here of old GW kits and scratch-built, which is my favorite!

Some general asteroids of various sizes.  One with a beacon.  And an asteroid base.  This guy was intended to be a mining operation that was taken over by pirates and upgraded with various scavenged weapon emplacements and engines for rudimentary maneuverability.  That’s a Dropfleet UCM battleship in the last image for scale.  I guess I should point out that the bitz for the asteroid base were from Dropfleet Resistance, UCM and the space station sets.  The Resistance sets in particular come with tons of cool bitz.  It’s basically spaceship Lego.

I have been making some asteroids.  Quite simple, just get some foam balls in various sizes and crush them up to give them some texture.

The big ball is actually going to be a space station.

Primed and put a grey coat down on the asteroids. Used Liquitex Gesso and Basic black and white.

Primered. Gesso works well with foam based things because it is very thick. Primered. Gesso works well with foam based things because it is very thick.

Space Stations. I consider space stations terrain, because they are basically stationary. Space Stations. I consider space stations terrain, because they are basically stationary.
Finished the asteroids with a bit of dry brushing and washing. Finished the asteroids with a bit of dry brushing and washing.

This particular thing I picked up somewhere on the internet – I forget.  It is a great piece of scratch building.  Props to who first came up with this.

Basically just a couple of plastic peanut butter jars and some cheap plastic disposable razors.  Remove the razor bit and hot glue them on.

Ultimately, I will add some cheap Halloween lights to take them to the next level.

This is what it looks like when its done.
